Boys Water Polo
Morro Bay at Cabrillo
(at the City of Lompoc Aquatic Center)
Cabrillo 18, Morro Bay 4[Cab 5,2,6,5 - 18 MB 0,1,2,1 - 4]
This one was all Cabrillo, almost all the time. MB GK Jack Krull played well, but faced a lot of shots. Meanwhile the Conqs in goal got to spend much of the afternoon watching.
Cody Stevens, Cabrillo's top tender has been nursing a bad shoulder for a while, and with the defense the team has been playing they haven't needed him. They controlled the mid-pool area, blanketed the defensive zone, and forced or created numerous turnovers.
The Conqs thoroughly out-played the Pirates in the 1st Quarter, generating a 5-0 lead. In the 2nd Cabrillo had as many shots on goal saved (4) as MB took. Including a 'save' on a lenth of the pool shot by the Pirates at the buzzer. They still out-scored MB the 2-1 in the period.
Cabrillo really cranked up the defense near the start of the 3rd, getting mid-pool steals on consecutive possessions. The Pirates would score a pair of goals in the period, but they came on really tough shots - including one that deflected of the post. The Conqs, meanwhile, would get many routine shots, and score on just about every other trip down the pool.
The 4th was equally lop-sided, with Cabrillo pounding away relentlessly and MB launching an occasional retort.
Eduardo Cardenas won the 3rd & 4th Quarter sprints - in the 4th Quarter one he even stopped trying to make it look difficult.
Conqs:
Goals - Eduardo Cardenas 7, Noah Caro 6, Ryan Marin 2, Alex Hamner, Denis Palutka, Phil Naughton.
Saves - Sam Reep [1st Half] 6, Zack Cole [2nd Half] 4 (+ 1 steal).
Pirates:
Goals - Travis Chirman 2, Kai Schwinnikie, Ryan Kitzman.
Saves - Jack Krull 8.
Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 14, Morro Bay 7
[Cab 4,3,2,5 - 14 MB 1,0,4,2 - 7]
The Pre-game Captains meeting - #17 Trevor Withan (L) & #11 Riqui Cardenas (Cabrillo) and #10 Lucas Jakovich & #2 Taylor Freeh.
This was close and fairly entertaining game until 15 seconds from the end of the 1st Quarter. Riqui Cardenas scored from close range to make it 3-1 Cabrillo and was almost immediately afterwards punched by the MB Goalkeeper.
That player was given a game ejection, and Cardenas awarded a 5-Meter penalty shot. The replacement GK, stopped the penalty, and threw the ball to the Cabrillo end of the pool. The Pirates put up a quick shot that went wide, and the Conqs threw the ball back down the pool to Cardenas who scored with one tick left on the clock.
Cabrillo extended the lead to 7-1 at halftime, and played the 2nd & 3rd platoons in the 3rd period. MB scored twice in the first 2:02 to pull within 3 points, but that was as close as they would get. The Conqs took a 9-5 lead into the 4th, and streched the advantage to 13-6, before cruising to the 14-7 final.
Conqs:
Goals - Devin Rosales 5, Riqui Cardenas, Micheal Wulfestieg 4, Martin Konrakos 1.
Saves - Dennis Thomas 4, Will Lee [4th Q] 2.
Pirates:
Goals - Tayler Freeh2, Jack Malzone 2, Brighton Green, Evan Weisberg, Lucas Jalovich.
Saves - (Starter) None, Joe Burton 2.
Santa Ynez at Santa Maria
(at the Karl Bell Aquatic Center,SMHS)
Santa Ynez 15, Santa Maria 5
[SY 4,2,4,5 - 15 SM 2,0,2,1 - 5]
It was only a 3 point margin (6-3) for the Pirates a minute and a half into the 3rd period.
Pirates [13-10, 4-0]:
Goals - Antonio Buell 6, Sam Pappas 3, Jeff Bastanchury 2, Parker Maccianti 2, Grant Davison, John Lastra.
Saves - Jordon Yarnell 15
Saints [7-16, 1-3]:
Goals - Marcos Cervantes 2, Jesse Sanchez 2.

Lompoc at Nipomo
(at Nipomo HS)
Lompoc lost both games. Lompoc Head Coach Taylor Emery reports that the varsity score was "Something like 13-9. It was 7-5 at the start of the 4th quarter. The JV score was about the same."
Girls Volleyball
San Marcos 3, Santa Ynez 0 [Non-League]
[25-11, 25-14, 25-23]
The numbers got better, but it's hard to tell if the Pirates improved or played against lesser subs.
Pirates [13-4, 8-0]: Taylor Nation 6 kills, Hannah Cantrell 4 kills.
Royals [16-5, 3-2]: Emily Allen 10 kills, 9 digs, 4 aces; Anika Wilson 8 kills, 6 digs, 6 assists; Andie O'Donnell 36 assists, Alex Seyle 35 assists.
