How to Mix Black and Blue and Get Pink [22 Oct]

21 October 2013

So, how does one mix Black and Blue and get Pink? It's quite simple really, you get the Lompoc & Cabrillo gals together at Conquistador Gym to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. It was the 3rd Annual Cabrillo Volleyball "Pink Game". There was a sold-out bake sale, raffle, and many other events and activities. The centerpiece though was a great 5-set volleyball match.

Katie Middleton had another nice all-around performance.
Lompoc at Cabrillo

Cabrillo 3, Lompoc 2
[25-16, 20-25, 25-11, 11-25, 15-10] (Total points 96-87) [STORY]

How many times can the Braves lose a 5-setter this season? Apparently, there is room for one more. This time a major factor was service errors. By one count Lompoc had 15, Cabrillo only 5 in the match. For example, the Braves sent 7 servers to the line in Game 5 - 3 of them had an error on their initial attempt.

That really tended to disrupt any attempt to establish or maintain any rhythm.

Braves: Kills - Chyanne Thomas 13; Brittany Bolusan 6; Chrissnay Brown 4; Lauren Powell 3.

Chyanne Thomas, Madison McNamee, and Jenna Grossini go way back together.

(Note: Earlier versions of this report listed #11 as Lauren Powell. LLR regrets the error.)

Conqs: Kills - Kyler Heitman 7; Fallon Wynne 6; Madison McNamee 5.

Cabrillo setter Sam Munoz took a kill to the head, and later had to leave the match during Game 4 because she was having vision problems.

She said after the match that she feeling better and that her vision was ok, but she still seemed a bit wobbly.

Coach Jim Hilliard said she would likely be out for at least one match.

We all wish you a speedy recovery Sam, but don't rush it.

Coach Thomas was left wondering what happened to her girls. Their bodies were there for the bus ride up the hill and the walk to the gym, but "They just never showed up." In reality, it might not have been quite that bad, but they did have trouble with consistency.

In Game 1 Cabrillo raced out to a 7-0 lead. Lompoc crawled back to within a few, but the Conqs won 11 of the next 12 points for a 20-8 advantage.

Game 2: Cabrillo scored the first 3, but the Braves countered with 3 of their own. The Conqs eased out to an 8-6 advantage, then shifted into hyperdrive again. When the dust settled they were up 20-7, and although Lompoc put together an 11-2 run of their own - it wouldn't be enough.

Cabrillo 2, Lompoc 0
[25-21, 25-23]

This match was a dandy, even though Cabrillo took both games.
Cabrillo out-scored Lompoc 7-2 down the stretch in Game 1, and 9-5 in Game 2 - including a 4 point service run.

A little bit of stunting by the Lompoc Cheerleaders.

What ??

Alison "Aly" Bean & Kyler Heitman organized the "Pink Game" as part of their senior project.

Organizing can be an adventure in the unexpected.

It was a bit chilly at Bickmore Courts by the end of the match.
