The early news today was that both local schools moved the varsity matches out of town to the sites originally slated to host the JV tussles, and cancelled the JV bouts due to air quality problems caused by the Canyon Fire on VAFB.

Like most years for the past decade or so, the Los Padres League crown runs through Santa Ynez. The Cabrillo's girls tennis team knew that on Tuesday when they had to suddenly pile into vans and head over due to smoke from the Canyon Fire on VAFB.
They were, however, unfazed by all the disruption and forged a signature win in the 90+ degree heat toppling the Pirates, 10-8.
Cabrillo opened with a strong 1st round, including a sweep in doubles and a crucial victory at #3 singles by Taylor Christen, but with two sets to go the match was still in doubt.
Those two final round contests - Cabrillo's #1 doubles duo Krista Elsen & Lilly Wood versus the Pirates #3 unit, Claire Collison & Caelyn Liane, and Christen against Nicole Bastanchury in singles, were both close. The good news for the Conqs was that they only needed one of the two.
And one out of two is what they got - both sets went 6-4, with Cabrillo nailing down the match by taking the doubles.
