Captain I-Pod Gets Revenge ....
And A Los Padres League Title
Tennis
LPL Finals
Lompoc's Alex Jensen, AKA "Captain I-Pod" to certain opponents, won the LPL Championship Singles Tournament title on Friday in Santa Maria. Jensen entered the tourney as the three seed with a 32-4 regular season record in league matches. The losses had come at the hands of Jake Eszes (St. Joe) and League MVP Juan Ferrer (36-0) of Santa Ynez. In last years final Ferrer also was able to top Jensen despite a monumental comeback 6-4, 0-6, (7-3). On Friday, however, the LHS junior disposed of both those impediments, Eszes in the semi-finals [7-6 (7-4), 6-1], and Ferrer in the final [5-7, 6-4, (7-0)]. Eszes beat Santa Maria exchange student Daniel Borcharding in the third place match.
Cabrillo made some noise in doubles, but that competition was won by the undefeated LPL combo of Miles Seemann (Fr) / Curtis Cole (Jr). They beat Kji Hamill / Samuel Orozco of St. Joseph 6-0, 6-2 in the final.
Seemann / Cole faced:
1st Rd: Steve Rodriguez / Luciano Luu (SM) 6-0
QF: Kyle Thumm / Marco Pasallo (Lom) 6-0
SF: Cole Upton/ Dane Eckert (MB) 6-1, 6-2
Both Conq doubles teams played well, Arjun Ayyar / Jordan Daniels won in the first round 6-2, then lost a tie-breaker in the QF to Upton / Eckert [6-7 (6-8)]. Ryan Anderson / Andrew Shewell won 6-3 in the first, and 6-3 (SM's Cory Zlelsy / Johnny Lazaro), before falling by tie-breaker in the semi-final. They took the first set 6-3, lost the 2nd 6-2, and fell in the TB 7-4. In the ensuing third place match-up they were tripped up by Upton / Eckert 6-0.
{Note: In the last two rounds (semi's & finals) competitors played two set and then a tie-breaker, if tied.}

Softball
It was a tough day for the locals on the softball diamonds. Lompoc fell at Templeton 2-0, and Cabrillo lost to St. Joseph 5-0. Templeton clinched at least a tie for the title with the win, and Cabrillo put themselves into a must win situation going into Tuesday's game vs. Lompoc. The Braves are tied with Morro Bay for third - one game back of St. Joseph.
Lompoc
The Braves allowed one run in the first, one in the fifth, and did not score themselves as the Eagles avenged their only league loss of the season. Harvard bound Kat Hicks allowed the locals only 2 hits, to go along with 3 walks, but Lompoc never could turn runners into points.
Lompoc held the Templeton murderer's row of seniors Kat Hicks [ .397 BA, .426 OBP, .552 SLG, 15 RBI], Kristina Barkley [.511 BA, .549 OBP, .830 SLG, 14 RBI], and Jill McClelland [.444 BA, .508 OBP, .870 SLG, 14 RBI, 5 HR] to reasonable numbers. They went 4-9 (2 doubles) with 1 RBI as the Eagles got 8 hits (3 doubles), 1 walk, and an error off the Braves.
JV
Coach Eva Luna's gang meanwhile was pounding the Eagles 13-2 in a 10-run rule 6 inning affair. Megan Maddock had 9 strikeouts (including twice striking out three when there were two runners on base and nobody out) and almost had a storybook ending.
The Braves took advantage of a number of Templeton miscues to take a 5-1 lead at the conclusion of the second inning, but the Eagles pushed one across in the top of the fifth. Then the wheels fell off.
Lompoc sent 11 batters to the plate. The first batter grounded out and then they pushed the score to 11-2 with two doubles (one by Maddock), and had the bases loaded with only one when Megan came to the plate again. She hit a deep fly to right field which should have scored the runner and won the game. Unfortunately, the runner left early and was doubled up after the fly was caught.
Once again the Braves allowed a runner in the top of the sixth, but she was marooned at third, and Lompoc used a two-on two-out double to get the required 10 run margin in the bottom of the inning.
Santa Maria Tournament
The Braves won the Consolation Championship with a 4-1 victory over Righetti. Megan Maddock (4 innings) and "CataChill" split the pitching duties in addition to each having two hits. M Brady had several big hits, Crystal Ramirez had several great running catches (and was named to the All-Tournament team), Emma Carter had a clutch pinch-hit appearance, and infielder Diana Garcia was moved to the outfield where she made a spectactular diving catch.
Cabrillo
From LLR Correspondent Dan Aldridge:
Cabrillo – 0, St. Joseph – 5
Cabrillo’s defense cleaned up their act and came out to play, committing no errors against a good hitting St. Joe team. St. Joe scattered 9 hits, unfortunately 2 hits were the difference. Caitlin Voss of St. Joe came up in the 3rd with two runners on and blasted a shot over the left field fence to put St. Joe on the board. Caitlyn then came up in the 5th with two runners on to hit a 2 run double, collecting all 5 of their RBI’s.
Kiley Shae Aldridge pitched the complete game striking out 8 and walking 1.
At the plate, the conqs struggled with their only hit coming in the bottom of the seventh when DP Lindsie Holloway lined a single to right field. The only other base runners came on a walk to Kelly Brown in the 1st and Lavena Linderholm (her first start from an injured knee a couple weeks ago) reached on an error in the 4th. Kailey Snyder pitched the complete game for St. Joe.

Baseball
The Braves dropped a 6-5 decision to Templeton to completely muddle the LPL race. Meanwhile the Conquistadors defeated St. Joseph 7-6 to move into third place with a half game lead over St. Joseph & Templeton.
The Lompoc loss created a five team logjam within one game of the league lead. The Braves face contests next week with current #3 Cabrillo and LPL co-leader Santa Ynez. Cabrillo has only the Lompoc game left in LPL action.
Lompoc
The Braves simply didn't get it done. Despite 8 hits, including doubles by Brandon Alonzo and Dalton Rouleau, and six walks allowed in 31 plate appearances they couldn't get more than 3 RBI's or score more than five runs.
Templeton scored six - two of which were unearned. Ryan Bower started and surrendered the six runs on just 5 hits and 2 walks. He struck out two. Daniel Dunaetz closed and gave up 2 hits and no runs while also fanning two batters.
Offensively, Alonzo had two hits and Rouleau scored two runs
Cabrillo
The Conquistadors handed the Knights their fourth straight league loss when Zach Pecyna slammed a three-run homer to finish a remarkable late inning comeback. St Joe scored in the first (2), second (1), and fourth (3) innings to take a 6-0 lead. Cabrillo began to crawl back by pushing across a run in the bottom of the fourth, but did their real damage in a six run fifth.
The Knights outhit them (7-6), and had fewer errors (1 vs. 3), but Cabrillo found a way to win. Pecyna had a big day with the lumber - 2-4 (HR, triple), 3 RBI, and two runs scored. As a team, they recieved 5 walks to augment those six hits, and all seven runs were driven in.
Brian Engler started and allowed the six runs on seven hits (one double), while walking and striking out three apiece. Closer Justin Boggs blanked St. Joe for the final three innings.
