Coe, Church, Casulo, College Plans

Coe Out for the Season

MICHAEL COE (pictured) is out for the season. That's the report from track guru Al Hunt who says Coe's aching ankle will keep him on the sidelines for the rest of Cal's track season.

"The day after the Stanford meet it was real sore," Coe told Hunt. An MRI then uncovered a tiny stress fracture adjacent to his achilles tendon.

"They caught it early enough that I should be able to get back to running in a couple weeks," Coe said. "But we decided that I should take a medical red shirt for the season. It means I would still have three outdoor seasons here."

Coe had hoped to put up an Olympic qualifying mark in the 1500. "That was the goal but the weeks with no running are going to hurt my conditioning."

College Plans for Li, Ortiz, Blow

BEN LI, Cabrillo's Santa Barbara County two-mile champion is reportedly headed to Harvard and teammate MIGUEL ORTIZ is looking at UC Irvine or UCSB. Both Li and Ortiz were winners in the recent Cabrillo-Lompoc meet, Li taking the 880 and Ortiz the 440. If Ortiz, the county titleholder in the one mile, goes to Irvine he will be reunited with Conq teammate COLIN HACKER. MASSON BLOW, the LHS triple jump champ, is weighing Cal Poly and Lehigh. He'll wrestle at either school and should he go East he'd get a shot at track as well.
