Div IV Wild Card: Lompoc Vs Norwalk [Story]

"Closer than it needed to be." That's how Lompoc Coach Loretta Jensen summed up Tuesday's match with the Norwalk Lancers. It served as a primary object lesson in early chicken counting on a day full of such comebacks. The Braves got sweeps from #1 singles (Alex Jensen) & #1 doubles (Kyle Thumm / Marco Pasallo) en route to a narrow 10-8 victory.

Lompoc got off to a fast start taking the 5-1 lead in the first round. But Norwalk almost turned the tables in the second circuit, using a 4-2 advantage in that round to close the overall margin to 7-5. Lompoc eked out a 3-3 tie in the third go-round for the win, but it was not easy.

The Braves entered the last two sets of the day, one singles & one doubles, with a 9-7 lead in sets, and a crucial 68-63 lead in games, the first tiebreaker if the teams tie at nine all. The singles set was lost, cutting the margin in games, but by only two games (73-70). This meant that the Lompoc duo of Thumm and Pasallo had to win at least three games for the Braves to win the match, but they did better than that, taking a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreck victory.

Varsity Report from Dan Aldridge:

Cabrillo-6 vs. Lompoc-5
Before the game started, The Conquistadores recognized this game as Senior Day. And in appreciation, they presented a bouquet of flowers to not only to Lavena Linderholm and Kelly Brown of Cabrillo, but they also presented flowers to Leanna Corral and Courtney Dosa of Lompoc.

The game then started with two scoreless innings, very similar to the last meeting between these two teams. In the top of the 3rd inning, Leanna Corral started things off for Lompoc with one out, she got on with a single. Corral advanced to 2nd on a pass ball. The next batter struck out. With 2 outs, Dana Campitelli hit a grounder through to left field. Corral, without hesitation, hit 3rd base in stride and headed for home. Kelcie Jo Pecyna charged the ball and came up throwing for home where the ball was bobbled and Corral scored the first run of the game.

Cabrillo answered back in the bottom of the 3rd. Shelby Kuhlman led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a strikeout, Alex Pino moved her to 2nd with a sacrifice bunt. Kelly Brown then singled and moved Kuhlman to 3rd. Alyssa Abayari then reached first safely on a throwing error knocking in the first run for the Conqs.

Lompoc scored another when Jehriann Lopez, running for catcher Lauren Lopes, started to steal home on a pass ball, hesitated and started back for 3rd when the throw from the backstop went wild and allowed Lopez to score.

With their confidence building, the Braves attacked again in the 5th. Corral beat out an infield single with a head first slide into first base. She advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Patty Martinez and again scored on a base hit by Campitelli. Three batters later, Jeana Carrillo helped herself out with an RBI single to knock Campitelli in. Cabrillo took a time out to change pitchers, which proved to be a timely move to end the inning two batters later.

The Braves then added an insurance run in the top of the 7th after Courtney Dosa doubled to left field, Lopes singled and Carrillo hit into a fielders choice that scored Dosa. A double play line drive handled by Abayari and tossed to Kuhlman ended the top half of the inning.

Trailing 5 to 1 in the bottom of the 7th, the Conqs put a rally together. Pecyna led off the inning reaching on an error. Kuhlman reached on a fielderʼs choice and Pecyna reached 2nd on an error. Bethany Radabaugh then came in as a pinch hitter, she lined a shot to left center that was tracked and caught by Elicity Fabing. Pino then hit a single to load the bases. Brown came up slapping a grounder that was handled and thrown home to beat Pecyna to the plate. With 2 outs and still trailing by 4 runs, the Conqs did not quit. Abayari stepped up and collected her second hit of the game that scored two runs. Lavena Linderholm then hit a sharp grounder that was mishandled scoring Brown. Lindsie Holloway then knocked in Abayari to tie the game. And to finish the game, Adrianna Segura hit a ground ball that Lompoc attempted to catch Linderholm advancing to 3rd. The ball was misplayed and Linderholm went home to score the winning run.

For Cabrillo, Segura picked up the win on the mound in relief allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks in 2-1/3 innings. Kiley Shae Aldridge started the game allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Carrillo pitched the complete game for the Braves giving up 8 hits, no walks and 5 strikeouts.

Other LPL Games
At Santa Ynez. Templeton beat Santa Ynez 12- 0 in five innings as sophomore Jane Hunt averaged one hit and one strikeout per inning in her first start of the season .
Kat Hicks & Karie Chambers each went 2 for 4 and Hicks had a double and three RBI . Santa Ynez made nine errors.
At Morro Bay. St. Joseph topped Morro Bay 6- 1.
Kim Dauer gave up six runs on 11 hits, but struck out six . Claire Hoose's (2 for 3) solo home run in the sixth inning was the lone run for the Pirates.

JV The Cabrillo girls used Shy'Ann Morrow's three run blast over the centerfield fence to race out to a commanding 6-0 lead in the first inning, and then added two more in the top of the third. With fireballer Jessica "Big Red" Rucinski in the circle, it began to look like a '5-10' kind of game, but the Braves battled back.
In the home half of the third Lompoc took advantage of some defensive miscues, walks, and timely hitting to rack up six runs of their own and cut the margin to two. They also pushed one across in the sixth, while reliever Megan Maddock was shutting down the Conq's. Suddenly, it was a one-run game heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Braves got a runner to second, when a mis-played ball in the outfield resulted in a double. However, Rucinski got two of her nine strikeouts in sucession, and a flyball out to the centerfielder to end the threat and the game 8-7.
