No One Circles the Lagoon Like the Cabrillo Conquistadors

Just a few quick notes from weekend action, since only partial infomation has been released for most of the events.

Cross-Country

UCSB Lagoon Run

Cabrillo / Lompoc [Both Boys & Girls]
In the past, the organizers usually just awarded medals to the age group winners, and that was all. This year, however meet director Leslie Wiggins-Roth concocted a team competition with the top 9 runners from each squad scoring points.

Boys
The participating teams were mostly from the south coast & Ventura County, but on the boys side they were smacked around by the Conqs. Cabrillo posted an 88 to run away (literally) from Ventura (145) and Dos Pueblos (254). DP's Sergey Sushchich [15:48] finished 1st, followed by Tackett & Petree of Ventura. Then it was all Cabrillo, as they pack ran, and put 11 runners in the top 20 to easily grab the crown.

Individual Scores (included):
Daniel Pena, 4th, 16:15; Levi Block, 5th, 16:15; Joel Velazques, 6th, 16:16; Steven Villanueva, 7th, 16:17; Jeshua Hopson, 8th, 16:18; Lazaro Nunes, 10th, 16:27; Omar Padilla, 13th, 16:41; Tyler Milstein, 17th, 17:08; Zach Trevino, 18th, 17:12; Craig Wise, 19th, 17:13; Johnny Hernandez, 20th, 17:14.

Girls
The girls race was won in 19:25 by Ventura's Hannah Kirkegaard. Lompoc's Ashley Fabing (19:43) nipped Kelly Kosmo (DP, 19:45) for second and was soon followed by the Braves Denice Hernandez (20:10) in 4th and Kaylin Barnes (21:33) in 17th.

Cabrillo girls in the top 20 were: Britni Heter (6th, 20:14), Korina Rich (8th, 20:29), and Devon Bedell (12th, 20:48).

Girls Volleyball

Cabrillo Varsity
Carpenteria Tournament

The Conq went to the south coast to take on twelve other teams at Carp. Each team was slated to play tengames (mostly round-robon) with the top 4 advancing to the 'playoffs'. Unfortunately, Cabrillo did not advance. Nordoff won the tourney, beating Gladstone in the final. The other simi-finalists were Mission Prep & St. Bonaventure.

Cabrillo JV

Note from Coach Jennifer Smith -

The team won the Consolation bracket in the Morro Bay Tournament this Saturday.

There were a total of 11 teams. Cabrillo was leading with 3 wins and 1 loss when the girls hit a slump and gave up the next 3 games making their record 3-4. The final 2 games were “do or die” and the girls came alive and played great Cabrillo ball; winning the next 2 games to finish 5th overall. Although, CHS only placed 5th, they were the only team to beat the 1st place team; Arroyo Grande Eagles who finished 9-1.

Caitlin Harvey-Morgan was phenomenal; everything she touched turned to gold. When she was playing the front row she was hitting so smart and hard; she was unstoppable. Her defense was more of the same, not much hit the floor when the ball came near Caitlin. In game 8, Rhiannon Saxe is credited with 20 serves in a row; the majority of them being ACES.
I’m incredibly proud of all the girls; they showed great intensity, teamwork and perseverance.
