Wrestling

Los Padres League

Santa Ynez 42, at Lompoc 39
The Pirates spotted Lompoc 12 points off the bat, since they were missing the extremities - 106, and 285. Head Coach Brian Wallace has guys for both of those spots, but one didn't make weight and the other could not be there Tuesday night. Lompoc Head Coach, Kyle Mayze, was just looking for a good effort from his kids. As it was, both coaches did a bit of breath-holding.

The atmosphere certainly tightened when Jose Vargas (126), who was down 11-1 on points in the 3rd round, suddenly pulled a reversal out of thin air, and was able to pin his opponent for a Fall and 6 team points. That win effectively put the Braves up by 18 (due to the walkover at Heavyweight), and the Pirates squarely behind the 8-ball. They responded to the pressure with a series of falls to neutralize the Braves advantage.

Wallace thought the later part of the match hinged on the performance of sophomore Ty Piligian at 182, who he said had "a good win over a quality opponent. I started breathing a bit easier after that one."

Each team had two goals in a game that was very chippy and involved lots of yammering. The difference being that the two Nipomo goals were disallowed. How chippy ? Well, 8 yellow cards worth.

Perhaps the sequence that best describes the level of frustration for the Pirates Tuesday afternoon was one late in the 2nd half. With possession of the ball deep in Cabrillo territory, they had a series of shots hit the crossbar, before they finally put one in the net. Unfortunately for them, however, the whistle had blown the ball dead, just before the shot. The resultant penalty kick was fired right at Conq GK Michael Lowes, who stopped it cold.

Conqs [6-7-2, 4-0]: Goals (Assists) - Francois Moliter (28th, defender deflected cross by Eduardo Cardenas); Steven Dalton (35th, Ray Walters - up from JV). Saves - Michael Lowes 16 (1 PK). Others playing well - Adrian Diaz (hustle/Ball Movement), Ezequiel Cadena (Defense). Team: Yellow Cards 3.
Pirates [4-4-2,3-1 LPL]: Goals (Assists) - None. Saves - Eric Kelley 2. Team: Yellow Cards 5.

If possible this one was even chippier than the varsity match, but without quite as many yellow cards. Both coaches praised the work of their defensive back lines, and neither was thrilled with the general tenor of the contest.
