Los Padres League

The Morro Bay Pirates had two LPL wins on Thursday. First their appeal of Tuesday's loss was upheld due to a Saints player participating in both the JV and Varsity matches on the same day. Then they defeated Lompoc at home on a combination of luck and hustle.

Nipomo 4,  at Cabrillo 3 [2OT]
[Halftime 2-2]
In a game of 'call and response' Cabrillo was one response short. The Conqs answered each Titans goal except the last, partially due to a tremendous save by Jason Alvarado on a free kick from 23 meters out in the waning minutes of the 2nd OT period.

The ball then took a very high hop of the turf and over his head. It turned into a sprint and collision with Chavez getting just enough of it to see it roll into the net.

It Should Have Been Two Blowouts

The Brave  hoopsters played two games at Paisola that should have been blow-outs - one was.

Boys Basketball

Los Padres League

The Braves rebounded, without much actual rebounding, the Defending Champs went down, and Cabrillo stole one at home.

Lompoc 37, Santa Ynez 33
[L: 13,11,6,7 - 37   SY: 6,6,16,5 - 33]

Rafael Arellano drains the first shot of the game for 2.

This one should have been over early, but the Braves kept messing about and the Pirates kept fighting. The Braves went with a small line-up, 4 guards and Luciano Lopez. Defensive transition fueled Lompoc  to a 13-0 advantage in the first 3 and a half minutes as all 5 starters scored before the Pirates got on the board. Then the Braves did not score again until almost the same time in the 2nd period. Thankfully, the defense was good during that stretch and Santa Ynez only scored 8 points.

After the drought was squelched by Drayton Howell's trey, the Braves received another from Torey Sims, along with 5 FTs from Sims and Howell as well. The offensive splurge garnered Lompoc a 24-12 lead at halftime, and it should have been over, right? Should have been - wasn't.

The Pirates came out of the locker room fired up. In the 3rd, they drained a pair of 3s, shot 4-4 from the line, and put 16 points in the book. Lompoc, meanwhile, kind of meandered around Bryan Ayer Court to the great frustration of the coaching staff. Lompoc did get a bucket and 2-2 FT shooting from Chris Gonzalez, but the rest of the team only managed 2 points - hitting 2 of 4 FT attempts.

The Braves also collected some bonehead fouls, including one for a 2nd delay of the game violation when Lompoc was leading 29-14. Chase Sanchez drilled both freebies, which were swiftly followed by 2 more FGs and a trey. Suddenly, it was 29-21, and Santa Ynez was starting to believe they could win.

A little more than 4 minutes in, Lopez picked up his 4th foul and had to leave the game. In the midst of missed shots and turnovers, Sanchez potted another trey for the Pirates, and the lead was 5 points. A Lompoc foul was followed by two Karl Fredrickson free throws -margin of 3.

The Braves called timeout with 2:14 left in the 3rd. The break helped stop the Pirates scoring run, but was followed by a 2 minute foul-fest. Brian Piemme connected on one free throw, but Gradon White answered with a bucket just before the end of the quarter and Lompoc led by a mere 2 points (30-28).

In the first 3 minutes of the 4th, Lompoc did not score. They did foul, however, committing 3, and Fredrickson made a long 3 for the lead, before going to to the line for two more points. With the Pirates ahead by three, the teams exchanged fouls, turnovers, etc., for most of the next 3 minutes. Until a 10 second span starting at 2:11, when Torey Sims cashed in on consecutive FGs to retake the lead. Howell would add a hoop and a FT in the last 40 seconds for the final score.

Oh, and the rebounding? Lompoc frequently gave the Pirates multiple opportunities at the offensive end, while failing to do the same for themselves. The soundtrack for much of the game was a frustrated voice yelling "Box out !!!!".

Braves : Drayton Howell 10 (1x3), Torey Sims 10 (1x3), Chris Gonzalez 8, Ralphie Arellano 3, Taylor Cornejo 3 (1x3), Luciano Lopez 2, Brian Piemme 1.
Pirates : Karl Fredrickson 8, Clinton Anderson 8, Chase Sanchez 7, Gradon White 5, Christian Vences 5.

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 71, Santa Ynez 37
[L: 6,24,26,15 - 71  SY: 15,8,6,8 - 37]

Lompoc missed a bunch of shots and were down early, but they turned it up a notch or two and ran away with this one.

Glen Taylor and Jerard O'Byrne keep working for the score.

The Pirates' Chase Mattheny came out of the gate, as the tall bald guy used to say, en fuego, hitting 3 3-pointers in the 1st period. The Braves actually opened the scoring, but Santa Ynez raced out to a 10-2 lead before Lompoc was able to get back in the scoring column with back-to-back buckets by Bailey and Venegas to climb within 4 points. The next two tallies went to the Pirates as Millard got 2, and Mattheny his third trey.

Santa Ynez pushed the lead to 11 early in the second quarter, before the Braves onslaught began. Jerard O'Byrne scored 16 of Lompoc's 24 in the period, including 4 treys. Richard Foster added 4 more points, the defense tightened up, and the Braves went into the halftime break with a 30-23 advantage.

In the midst of the jubilation surrounding the comeback, there was one recurrent problem - elbows. A pair of Braves were warned about clearing out with the elbows high, and the situation would get worse.

Unfortunately, the elbow problem raised its ugly head early (7:44), when Ruben Venegas caught a Santa Ynez player in the head with one. Venegas received a flagrant foul call and was ejected from the game. Mattheny connected on 1 of 2 FTs for the 1st points of the second half.

Foster would continue scoring in the 3rd (7 points), but Glen Taylor (9 points) took over from O'Byrne. Five Braves contributed points, and the locals outscored the Pirates 26-6 in the period.

The 4th quarter was more of the same scoring-wise, but with a different cast of characters, as Head Coach Joe Smith cleared the bench. Gabe Simon had 6, P. Krauec 5, and Michael Taylor 4 for the Braves, while Mattheny scored 4, including another trey for the Pirates.

The elbow situation, however, was not over. Simon, who got some blood on his jersey in the 3rd quarter, had to switch from his usual #3 to Venegas' #14 causing some confusion about whether or not an ejected player had re-entered the game. More disturbingly, Richard Foster picked a technical foul at 6:38 for one, but was not tossed out.

Braves : 10 Players Scored. Jerard O'Byrne 16 (4x3) [all 2nd Q], Glen Taylor 11, Richard Foster 11, Elijah Bailey 8, Cory Maxwell 4, Gabe Simon 6, P Kruaec 5, Ruben Venegas 4 (1x3), Michael Taylor 4, Austin Hayes 2.
Pirates : Chase Mattheny 14 (4x3), Blake 8, Jackson White 8 (2x3), Jacob Millard 4, Jackson Tatemia 2, Ryan 1.

The Saints were up a point with just 8 seconds remaining, when they missed the front end of a 1+1 FT. Chad Brodhead grabbed the rebound and was fouled trying to run out the clock. Lompoc Girls Return to the Pool

The Lompoc Girls Water Polo program began their comeback on Wednesday. The small squad opened their season with a JV match at the COLAC. The team is helmed by Head Coach Lynette Martin and assistant Taylor Emory.

The 9 member strong Lompoc team faced off against a Santa Maria team made up of the JV and some varsity bench-warmers. It wasn't the greatest game ever played, but considering the circumstances it was a very respectable re-start for a program that some had given up for dead. The Braves had some difficulty with the Santa Maria starters, but they played fairly even with the reserves, even though they only 1 substitute available, and the Saints brought 21 players. Santa Maria had several 'line-changes' during the contest, prompting Head Coach Lynette Martin to tell her girls- "Hey, you played three teams out there today."
Coach Martin talks to the team during a time out.
The Saints got going when Shara Natividad netted the 1st of her 3 goals 4:40 left in the initial period. Taylor Shoaf followed 36 seconds later with the first of her 4 goals, and Natividad finished the 1st quarter scoring with her second goal with about 3 minutes remaining.

Santa Maria scored twice more in the first 1:32 of the second, including Shoaf's 2nd, but was mostly held in check until the end of the period, getting goals with 2:02 and 0:14 left on the clock. Four Saints scored in the quarter.

The Braves made their hay in the 3rd. After surrendering a goal to fall behind 8-0, freshman Daxhia Fabela put the Braves on the board for the first time this season with a nice shot off the counter. Lompoc then took advantage of Santa Maria's replacement of all their field players to score 3 more- posting 4 goals in a row.

The Braves surge was fueled by good defense and several steals, leading to more counter-attack scores. Senior Cristina Macias had two of them in under a minute and junior Stephanie Bobadilla tossed one in with 71 seconds left. In addition to the goals, the Braves forced several saves by Saints goaltender Savannah Milne and had a shot ricochet off the crossbar just before the end of the period.

Cristina Macias becomes the Braves Season leader in goals scored.

Unfortunately, that would be Lompoc's (ahem) high-water mark. The teams traded goals to start the 4th, with senior Lucy Young scoring for the Braves, but Santa Maria hit 4 goals in the final 4:11 to close out the game.

Coach Martin was proud of the group effort, especially "considering that they played the entire game with one sub.", liked the leadership shown by team captains Bobadilla and Young, and also appreciated the "strong" play of Cristina Macias.

Braves [0-1,0-1LPL]: Goals - Cristina Macias 2, Daxhia Fabela, Stephanie Bobadilla, Lucy Young. Goaltending - Maria Costanza played entire game and had a few saves.
Saints : Goals - Taylor Shoaf 4, Shara Natividad 3, Cindy Montanado 2, Adrianna Foster, Cali Hernandez, Selena Alvarado, Casandra Cadena. Goaltenders (c. 5 saves)  - Cindy Montanado (1st Half), Savannah Milne (3rd Q), Jenae Tell (4th Q).

The Braves will play the rest of the season as a JV team, and are in action each of the next three Wednesdays. They are also an alternate team for the Cabrillo JV tournament this weekend.

The Team: #1 Maria Caranza (Jr), #2 Mariela Barajas (Sr), #3 Lucy Young (Sr), #4 Luisa Hernandez (Jr), #5 Cristina Macias (Sr), #7 Angelica Vargas (Jr), #13 Daxhia Fabela (Fr), #14 Anali Cardoza (Fr), #18 Stephanie Bobadilla (Jr).

Tuesday's Tribulations

Wrestling

Los Padres League

Santa Ynez 42, at Lompoc 39
The Pirates spotted Lompoc 12 points off the bat, since they were missing the extremities - 106, and 285. Head Coach Brian Wallace has guys for both of those spots, but one didn't make weight and the other could not be there Tuesday night. Lompoc Head Coach, Kyle Mayze, was just looking for a good effort from his kids. As it was, both coaches did a bit of breath-holding.

The atmosphere certainly tightened when Jose Vargas (126), who was down 11-1 on points in the 3rd round, suddenly pulled a reversal out of thin air, and was able to pin his opponent for a Fall and 6 team points. That win effectively put the Braves up by 18 (due to the walkover at Heavyweight), and the Pirates squarely behind the 8-ball. They responded to the pressure with a series of falls to neutralize the Braves advantage.

Wallace thought the later part of the match hinged on the performance of sophomore Ty Piligian at 182, who he said had "a good win over a quality opponent. I started breathing a bit easier after that one."

Each team had two goals in a game that was very chippy and involved lots of yammering. The difference being that the two Nipomo goals were disallowed. How chippy ? Well, 8 yellow cards worth.

Perhaps the sequence that best describes the level of frustration for the Pirates Tuesday afternoon was one late in the 2nd half. With possession of the ball deep in Cabrillo territory, they had a series of shots hit the crossbar, before they finally put one in the net. Unfortunately for them, however, the whistle had blown the ball dead, just before the shot. The resultant penalty kick was fired right at Conq GK Michael Lowes, who stopped it cold.

Conqs [6-7-2, 4-0]: Goals (Assists) - Francois Moliter (28th, defender deflected cross by Eduardo Cardenas); Steven Dalton (35th, Ray Walters - up from JV). Saves - Michael Lowes 16 (1 PK). Others playing well - Adrian Diaz (hustle/Ball Movement), Ezequiel Cadena (Defense). Team: Yellow Cards 3.

The California Community College Football Coaches Association named 5-10, 215 pound Allan Hancock College running back Cameron Artis-Payne the State Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-American.

Artis-Payne, who is transferring to Auburn University, led the state with 2,048 rushing yards. He averaged 7.8 yards per attempt on 261 carries and scored 25 rushing touchdowns.

He was also named All-California First Team Offense & Co-Offensive Player of the Year (Josh Webb, Santa Ana) for Region IV. In Region V, Santa Barbara City College offensive lineman Wade Norberg and linebacker Morgan Nevin made the All-California First Team.

Ryan Church to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame

The Santa Barbara Foresters Hall of Fame, anyway.

Milwuakee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke will be the guest speaker at the Annual Hot Stove banquet for Forester inductees Andre Miller and former Lompoc and MLB star Ryan Church. The ceremonies and dinner will be at 5 :30 p.m., Friday, 18 Jan. 2013, at Earl Warren Showgrounds.

Church earned 10 varsity letters in 3 sports (baseball, basketball, football) at Lompoc, and was a member of Dan Bodary's 1993 CIF Division 2 Baseball championship team.

Church played with the Foresters for two seasons (1998, 1999), during his University of Nevada-Reno playing days, followed by seven seasons in the major leagues. At Reno Church batted .363 as a junior before tearing it up as a senior for the 38-19 Wolfpack, hitting .382 with 15 doubles, 14 home runs and 62 RBIs in 55 games.

Selected in the 14th round of the 2000 MLB draft by the Cleveland Indians, he was traded to the Montreal Expos before making his August 2004 MLB debut After the season the Expos moved to Washington D.C. and were renamed the Nationals.

In 2005, while batting .325, and in consideration for Rookie of the Year, he was injured in a collision with the outfield wall. It would be the 1st of several injuries, including multiple concussions, that would curtail his career.

He had his best season in 2007, batting .272, slugging .474, and with an OPS of .813.  He also posted career highs of 144 games, 570 at-bats, 57 runs,128 hits,43 doubles, 15 home runs and 70 RBIs.

At the conclusion of the season (Nov. 2007) Church was traded to the New York Mets, where he sustained concussions in spring training and during a game on May 20th. He was subsequently traded (10 July 2009) to the Atlanta Braves, before signing as a free agent with  the Pittsburgh Pirates. On 31 July 2010, he was sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of a 5 player trade..

Male and Female Athletes of the Week

Ali Rodriguez, Cameron Walker
The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable honored two Santa Maria area high school basketball players on Monday as its Male and Female Athletes of the Week - Ali Rodriguez from Pioneer Valley and Righetti's sophomore sensation Cameron Walker.

A senior guard for the Panthers, Rodriguez has helped Pioneer Valley to the best start in program history (11-3, 2-0 Pac-7). She opened the week by scoring 4 points and handing out 3 assists while running the offense on the road at San Luis Obispo. The Panthers took that league-opener 56-49.

In the second game game of the week , her team needed her to use a different set of skills and she responded. Down 19 in the 1st period to a good Paso Robles team, they needed points. She scored 25 points, nabbed 6 steals, and ladled up 3 assists as the Panthers came roaring back to win by 19 points -  55-36.

Walker, who already has 6 'full-ride' scholarship offers and the interest of most of the PAC-12, followed up some tremendous performances at various tournaments over the break with two outstanding efforts in PAC-7 play last week.  He had 35 points at Paso Robles in the league opener, draining a game-tying trey and then knocking down the go-ahead bucket for a 63-62 victory. He followed that up with a team-high 22 points against defending league champion Arroyo Grande as the Warriors grabbed the league lead by the throat with a 69-52 win.

Cabrillo
AD Dan Troup talked about Boys and Girls Soccer, Both Basketball squads, and Wrestling. Especially mentioning Tyler Thomas' 2nd place finish at the Megatron Tournament at the LA Convention Center.

GIRLS SOCCER

at La Serna 1, Cabrillo 0
Cabrillo Head Coach Derrick Wong has been on a mission. After losing in the CIF Division 5 Semifinals last season, he wanted to make sure his team was exposed to as many of the top teams in their division as possible - before they got to the playoffs.

That has required several road trips to Orange County costing the Conqs in the won/loss columns, they are 0-3-4 in the OC, but Wong's view is that you get better by playing good teams not by beating patsies.

In the latest incarnation of the Cabrillo road show, the Conqs played La Serna - the team that bounced them in that semi a year ago and currently ranked #2 in the division. Cabrillo surrendered an early goal, but battled the rest of the way.

Several equalizer attempts cleared the crossbar. Kelsey Sherry's miss (16th) came courtesy of a collision at the top of the box that injured her knee. She rode the pine the rest of the game as a precaution. Brianna Farley saw two 40+ yard penalty kicks skim over the net. The Conqs also received good efforts from Jamie Miller and Emma Fienga.

Conqs [4-5-4,2-0 LPL]: Goals/Assists - None.
Lancers [9-2-3]: Goal - Miranda Yzabal (3rd, long ball, hit top left). GK Penny Roman.

Channel Islands 4, Bishop Diego 1
It was not a good day for area teams to play the Lancers, as BD took on a different set. The Cards managed tie the game early, but gave up a goal just before halftime and 2 after it. "Emergency GK" Jordan Price was one of several players filling in for the sick and injured.
Cardinal [4-1-5]: Hanna Brand (14th, off Corner Kick).

El Cajon Christian 4, Mission Prep 0
Royals [7-3-1]: Saves - Grace Oscer 8.

BOYS SOCCER

Mission Prep 2, St Joseph 1
Prep broke a 1-1 tie on a late 2nd half PK by Hungerford.
Royals [3-11-3]: Goals - Brendan Dryne, Bailey Hungerford. Saves - Peter Bertelson 15.

Orcutt Academy 3, at Bishop Diego 1
[Halftime 1-1]
Spartans [7-6-1]: Goals (Assists) - Tony Andoyan (14th, Angel Gallo), Zach Smith (43rd, Angel Gallo), Tony Andoyan (50th, Nicolas Mariscal-Pena). Saves - Dominic Miller 6 (2/4).

San Luis Obispo 1, Bakersfield 1 [TIE]
Tigers [8-4-3]: Goal (Assist) - Lukas Holocher (Trevor James). Saves - Michael Lambert 4

BOYS BASKETBALL

St Joseph 58, Buckley 49
[SJ: 18,14,10,16 - 58   B: 7,15,15,12 - 49]
St. Joseph cruised to victory after a big 1st quarter and won the Las Vegas Tournament Championship for the 3rd year in a row.

Knights [11-3]: Curry Parham 18 pts (6-6 FT), 3 rbs; Case Bruton 17 (5-6 FT), 6 rbs, 3 stls; Keith Datu 12 pts, 12 rbs; Spencer Casarez 6 pts (2x3), 2 rbs, 1 stl; Aaron Olsen 3 pts (1x3); Chris Barganier 2 pts, 1 rbd, 1 stl.
Griffins [13-4]: No Additional Information Provided.

Bishop Diego 49, Mission Prep 46
[BD: 3,17,11,18 - 49    MP: 6,14,15,11 - 46]
Carson Pearson's trey with 30 ticks on the clock gave BD its first lead of the game.

Day 2: Saturday, 5 January 2013

The CIF-SS Div. 3 Arroyo Grande girls won their own tournament for the first time in five years by topping the Div. 2 Panthers. The Eagles went 5-0 and were led by 3 seniors - Tournament MVP Alexis Elias (8 goals in 3 games on Sat.), 1st Team GK Hannah Wadlow (28 saves in 3 Sat. games, 45 in the tournament), and 1st Team defender Delaney Ainsworth.

Championship: Arroyo Grande 7, Newbury Park 4
AG struck just 14 seconds into the game on an Elias five-meter penalty shot. The Eagles then packed the zone defensively, trying to force Newbury Park into taking bad shots that would feed the counter-attack.

It worked. Wardlow hit Popovich and Elias with long outlet throws to push the lead to 4-0, before Elise Begg finally got the Panthers on the board with 1:22 left in the 2nd period. Newbury Park never got closer then 3 goals the rest of the way.

Eagles [13-2]: Goals - Alexis Elias 4, Melanie Popovich 2, Brooklyn VanderVeen 1. Saves - Hannah Wardlow 9.
