CIF-SS TEAM TENNIS DIV 3 PLAYOFFS

Varsity
Wild Card Round Game G
at Cabrillo HS

Cabrillo 10, Atascadero 8

The six seniors on the Cabrillo squad all knew that last year the Conqs made the playoffs, but were eliminated in the first round. On Tuesday at Cabrillo HS, it looked like history might repeat itself. Beginning the three 3rd round singles matches, the issue was very much in doubt.

Although Cabrillo led 8-7 (64-57 in games), most of that had been earned in
Taylor Christen Serves
doubles.
Cabrillo had a 6-3 (45-28) margin in doubles, in large part due to a sweep by Jordan Spice & Karly Kovacs at "#3". Singles on the other hand, had not been so kind, the Conq trailed 2-4. The Greyhounds had changed things up a bit - moving Anneline Breytenbach from her usual doubles spot to #2 singles.

Through the first two rounds neither Breytenbach sister - Nicolene occupies the #1 position for Atascadero - had lost a set. Nicolene had topped Cabrillo #1 Sierra Hohimer 7-5 in the first set of the day, and the the sisters had won the other 3 sets they played 6-0.

Hohimer and Coach 'Dad'
So, as the wind grew increasingly strong and blustery, the six singles players set out to settle the match with 3 final contests. On Court 1 Cabrillo #3 Taylor Cristen faced Nicolene, and Conq junior Karly Atkin, who had not won a game all day, faced Kacey Journey on Court 3. Sierra Hohimer and Anneline Breytenbach prepared to duel on Court 2.

Cristen was game, but was quickly overpowered and suddenly it was 8-8 (64-63). If things ran to form the teams would likely tie in sets or even in games which would force the use of the rather convoluted CIF tiebreaker playoff (don't ask) system. Fortunately, both of the others had taken small leads in their respective sets and those partials put Cabrillo up 68-64 in games, and had a bunch of coaches and spectators trying to do math.

Cabrillo lined the fence, Atascadero used the sidewalk to watch the final set.

Karley Atkin
The girls, though, simply ignored all the sideline activity and just won out. Karley Atkin earned a 6-1 set victory to give the locals a 9-8 lead. That margin, combined with the games Hohimer had accumulated ensured that Cabrillo could not be caught. Sierra put the nail in the coffin a short while later, winning her deuce-filled match 6-3.

It was truly a team victory, as every Conq starter earned at least a share of 1 point in the win. Cabrillo advances to play at Downey on Wednesday afternoon.
