LPL Girls Tennis Tuesday's Results

Lompoc 13 vs Santa Maria 5
Six Lompoc Seniors celebrated their last appearance on Dave Bickmore Courts by beating the Saints. Lompoc swept doubles and picked up 4 sets in singles - 3 from senior Paty Martinez.

More to follow.

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 9 (76) Santa Maria 9 (75)
LHS JV Coach Jim Steffey, who has been one of the most reliable suppliers of results to LLR, writes "Our last match couldn't have been more exciting. We lost some matches that we shouldn't have lost; but won a couple that I didn't expect to.

We finished under the lights at the Minami Center, with a very exciting last two sets. My number three singles player was up 5 - 2 (and cruising to what I thought was a "for-sure" victory), and my number two singles player was up against Santa Maria's German foreign-exchange student and had only dropped two games in the previous two sets. I figured after the first round when the score was tied 3 - 3, that the match was going to be close, so I kept telling my girls that EVERY game was going to be important. Overall, the match was dead-even at this point, both in sets AND games. Before I knew it Serena's match was tied, and Gold was ahead 5 - 4. Gold prevailed 6 - 4. It was at this point that I thought we might be able to win the match outright by Serena winning her last set. We had 9 sets to their 8. Game-wise, we were now up by two games. In order for us to win the match, Serena had to either win, or go to a tie-breaker. Serena's match went to a tie-breaker (which she unfortunately lost), but by getting to the tie-breaker she could lose by no more than one game. The match ended 9 - 9, with Lompoc prevailing due to more games won, 76 - 75.

A wild one to end the season on for sure. We were missing two of our regular players, Rosa Carreno (she had to take the CAHSEE) and Katelynn Lee (personal). Stepping into the void were two rarely used players, Miriam Lopez and Jessica Smith who got their very first set win of the season, 7 - 5.

The player of the day: Gold Vang for sweeping her three sets."

Back row (left to right): Katelynn Lee, Ashley Branson, Miriam Lopez, Isabel Anguiano, Emily Tremblay, Jessica Smith, and Coach Steffey.

Front row (left to right): Gold Vang, Azucena Villalobos, Serena Zuares, Rosa Carreno, and Julie Abrego.

Cabrillo 6 vs Santa Ynez 12
The Pirates won the doubles 8-1, and took 4 singles matches to salt this one away. More to follow.

LPL Boys Water Polo
The LPL Season Tournament got underway on Tuesday at Paul Nelson Pool in Santa Maria. The Top 2 seeds [Santa Ynez, Cabrillo] earned first round bye's - so # 3 took on #6, and #4 matched up with #5. First round winners met the top 2 seeds in round two with the lowest seed facing #1. The Third round (placing games) are Thursday @ the COLAC.

Second Round
Lompoc vs Cabrillo
This was either a heartbreaking loss, or a thrilling comeback - depending on which side you were rootin' for. Lompoc had 5-2, and 6-3 leads, but Cabrillo scored 4 goals in the last 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth period to take it 7-6. Pickles and Dunaetz each had 3 goal for the Braves.

Morro Bay vs Santa Ynez
Can you say BLOWOUT ? Santa Ynez can !! This 24-2 laugher saw 7 Pirates of the orange kind score in double figures - led by Bryce Small with 5. LPL Cross-Country
The valley teams have participated in two meets held at River Park recently. The large Santa Barbara County Meet hosted by Lompoc, and the LPL Finals Meet hosted by Cabrillo. Unfortunately, the individual scores for the JV races from the SBC Meet are still a bit on the incomplete and unverified side, but we hope to have them in final form soon.

Santa Barbara County

Cabrillo dominated the boys side - winning both races by easy margins. Levi Block & Eddie Tovar were the top 2 Conq finishers. The Cabrillo girls JV finished 4th, and the rest of the local teams all finished in 7th - 9th place in the various races. Cabrillo varsity girls - 8th. Lompoc varsity squads finished 7th (boys), and 9th (girls). The JV were 8th (boys) and 9th (girls).

LPL Finals
This one was one of the major surprises of the fall - Morro Bay topped the Conquistadors for the boys varsity title - but don't get feeling too sorry for the tribe from the hill. They still finished a close second with a young team and won the JV race with a perfect score. The girls varsity finished out of the money, and out of CIF at 6th, but the JV was 3rd.

Lompoc on the other hand came out of nowhere to capture 3rd place in the girls varsity. Both boys units finished dead center in 4th (of 7 teams), and the 4 freshmen on the girls JV ran well, but posted a No Score since they were lacking a fifth.

Eight locals made the All-LPL Teams.

Individual Results

CIF-SS Girls Golf
The LPL and PAC-7 Individual qualifiers competed over 18 holes at the Soule Park Golf Club in Ojai. The CIF Northern Individual Regional, held on Monday, 3 November 08, was one of two Regionals in Southern Section, and included qualifiers from the Peninsula/ Torance area and over to Burroughs/ Cresenta Valley/ Hart. Teams closer to the local area were DP, Camarillo, Oxnard, Westlake, etc. .
The local girls did really well. Among the 45 (of 79) players who moved on to the finals were 2 of the 3 from both the LPL and the PAC-7. Danielle Gilaspy [St. Joseph 77, T-17th], Morgan Salm [Cabrillo 82, 41st] from the LPL, and Makayla Mier [Righetti 77, T-17th], Mareon Smit [Righetti 83, T-42nd] from the PAC-7. Dos Pueblos also sent on 4 of 5 - so Santa Barbara County put 8 girls into the finals. Sadly, Maddison Shean [Santa Ynez 90] and Sam Sullivan [Arroyo Grande 85] both missed the cut at 84.
