CIF Week #1 Continues

Boys Water Polo

Hoover 17, Cabrillo 9

The Cabrillo boys water polo squad hung tough for almost 3 quarters, but were outscored 8-1 in the last 10 minutes of the game, falling 17-9 to a tough Hoover team. Coach Joel Jory had shown some prescience a few weeks ago. When shown the new CIF playoff alignments, he zeroed in on the Pacific League, saying " that's going to be a tough group to deal with". They were. Hoover, the third place team in the Pacific, consistantly exploited the Conquistadors inexperience down the stretch. Combined with Cabrillo errors it was more than enough. Jory summed it up with "We don't have enough athletes to play poorly and win".
A somewhat dazed Ara Oganesyan was pummeled by celebrants, including several former coaches and players, as the first year Tornado Head Coach saw his team notch their first CIF water polo victory since 1991.
Cabrillo had four players score two goals apiece - Tyler Chard, Brayson Ogan, Jake Motyer, and Garrett Darling. Patrick Robinson chipped in the other one. Hoover was led by Hakop Kaplanyan (9), David Simonyan (3), Tiko Edinchikyan (2), Zolec Karibayan (2), Tarron Ifiktanyan (2), Zleton Kaplanyan, and Andrew Michyel.

Rowland 14, Lompoc 4
Lompoc traveled to Rowland Heights and fell to the Raiders (San Antonio Lg # 2). The Braves played decent defense, racking up 15 steals (Kyle Pickles 4, Michael Ostrander 4), and getting 7 saves from Kyle Thumm. Unfortunately they couldn't find the net consistantly, shooting only 4-22 against the deeper, more experienced team. Rowland took an early lead and Lompoc never recovered. Scorers for the Braves were Daniel Dunaetz (3) and Kyle Pickles.
