Conqs Time Runs Out **18 Nov 08 Update**

The Santa Barbara County Champion Conquistadors.

CIF-SS Cross Country Prelims

The X-C Prelims were held in scorching heat and increasingly smoky conditions at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut CA . The course run was modified accordingly. The early racers (Div's II/III/IV) ran the 2.94 mile 1999 course modification and the later races (Div's I & V) ran an even shorter route. This consisted of a double 'Valley Loop' plus 'Reservoir Hill'.
[Complete Results]

Division III [Cabrillo / Lompoc]
Both the Lompoc boys and girls qualified for the meet along with the 14th seeded Cabrillo boys. The D-III races were divided into three heats for both the boys and girls. This meant that the 16 teams advancing to the finals would consist of the top five teams from each heat plus the fastest 6th place finisher. [Individual Times are at the bottom of the Post section]

Boys
Unfortunately for the Conqs, they ended up in a faster heat (#2), and finished 6th of 16 teams - clocking in at 1:25:45. Cabrillo was almost two minutes ahead of the Heat 3 #6 squad from La Canada, but were 31 seconds behind the 6th place team from heat #1, St Francis (La Canada), and so were eliminated even though they finished faster than two teams,West Torrance (1:26:13) & SLO (1:26:05), in Heat 3. The Lompoc (1:28:18) boys finished 7th of 18 teams in Heat 3. Atascadero (1:28:39) finished 13th (of 17) in Heat 1, and both Paso Robles & San Marcos no scored in Heat 3.

Girls
The young (1 senior) Lompoc girls were 10th (1:49:52) out of 16 teams in their heat (# 1). San Marcos (1:46:33) was 11th of 17 in Heat 2, while both Atascadero (4th, 1:41:38), and SLO (5th, 1:43:30) advanced to the finals out of Heat 3.

Other Divisions:
Boys
In Div II, Dos Pueblos (8th, 1:24:42), Arroyo Grande (10th, 1:25:17), and Righetti (11th, 1:26:32), all ran in the 16 team Heat 1, while Santa Maria (11th, 1:26:33) was in Heat 2 (17 Teams).

Morro Bay (2nd, 1:26:24) advanced in Div IV, after finishing 1 point behind Laguna Beach, but both Nipomo and Templeton no timed.

And Laguna Blanca's Kevin Lunn (the SB County Champ) won his shortened Div. V race to help propel his squad to a 4th place finish (1:02:18) and a spot in the finals.

Girls
Likewise Arroyo Grande' s Karlee Owens (18:01) won her Div. II Heat 2 race to help the Eagles (1:39:10) capture 4th place and a finals trip. Neither Dos Pueblos (8th, 1:45:13), or Righetti (16th, 1:56:40) survived in Heat 1 of the same division.

Div IV was somewhat more productive for area schools. Templeton (1:44:21) finished in 2nd just two points back of Oaks Christian, and one spot ahead of LPL rival Morro Bay (3rd, 1:47:27) in Heat 3, but St. Joseph (6th, 1:53:44) & Santa Ynez (no score) went down in Heat 2.

And finally, neither Cate (9th, 1:20:25 short) or Bishop Diego (no score) could gain any traction in their Div. V race (Heat 1), but Laguna Blanca (1:14:49 short) finished 4th in Heat 2 to become the only SB County school to qualify for the finals in either boys or girls - and they did it in both.
