Round One to the Hilltoppers Progeny

The moon peaks over the hedges at Huyck Stadium during the Lompoc/ Dos Pueblos JV game on Thursday night.

Thursday was one of those with to much sports to fit the time allotted. Cabrillo hosted Lompoc in Girls Volleyball (Varsity & JV) and Girls Varsity Tennis, while the JV played downtown. Lompoc also played JV & Frosh football games at Huyck Stadium, with the Conquistador freshmen on the road in Arroyo Grande. Meanwhile, the Girls Golf squads from both schools were at LPL Tournament #2 hosted by Santa Maria at Rancho Maria Golf Club. There was even some water polo here and there.

This was not a repeat of recent years, with a parade of Conq servers pounding the Braves off the court. Cabrillo did sweep, but they had to work for it. In Game #1, Lompoc took a quick 4-2 lead, and were still in contact at 6-8, when the Conq put together a 12-3 run. Each team scored 5 points to close it out. Game #2 started with Kelly O'Connell serving Cabrillo to an 11-0 advantage, and many in the gym were expecting Lompoc to collapse, instead the Braves rallied. Lompoc steadily closed the gap until a Jesslyn Brundy ace brought them to within a single point at 20-19, but Cabrillo had a 5-1 run for the win. The Braves again fought back, taking a 7-1 lead in Game #3, Cabriilo cut the margin to two (11-9), Lompoc pushed it back to four (13-9), and held it at three (15-12). It was not to last - the Conqs tied the score at 16 all, and then outscored the Braves 9-1 to end the match.

The Conquistadors are happy that Slovakian exchange student Magdalena "Maggie" Fabikova showed up with a tennis racquet. The senior #2 posted a three set sweep in singles on Thursday, including a 7-5 victory in a really good 2nd round contest against Braves #1 Sameeha Husayn.

Cabrillo also racked up sweeps from senior doubles duos Bree Piper-Williams/ Nikki Peirtsegaele and Alena Taber/ Andrianna Siefe. Particularly impressive was a Taber/Siefe rebound - they were down 2-5, fought off what Head Coach MaryBeth Steiber said "seemed like 40 set points", and pulled out a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win.

Cabrillo also had a big advantage in experience - 11 of 13 team members were seniors, while the Braves squad had 3 seniors, 5 juniors, and 2 frosh.

This one was, well, ugly !! The Chargers took their initial possession of the game, drove the field, scored on a Dylan Rohde TD Run, and kicked the PAT. Nothing much happened offensively the rest of the half. DP controlled the ball almost exclusively, had some additional trips to the red zone, but for naught.

The Braves looked to get something going early in the second half, when Rafael Arellano took the opening kick-off 51 yards to the DP 30 yardline. They gave the ball back 4 plays later - losing 2yards on 4th & 14.

Lompoc was given another opportunity midway through the 4th quarter, when the Chargers turned the ball over via a fumble at their own 43. The Chargers helped out some more with a 15yd facemask penalty, and Arellano capitalized with a 25 yd TD jaunt down the right side. With 5:13 remaining, the Braves attempted the PAT, strange things happened and the kick was just short.

Lompoc forced a punt on the ensuing DP series, but gave it back again on downs, and watched the Chargers take a pair of knees.

The Juggernaught continues - it was 35-0 at the half. Steve Haskins frosh squad was held to their second lowest point total of the year. Yup - thats 188 points in 4 games (a 47 pts/gm ave.) !!! The low was last week - 42.

Lompoc 28, Dos Pueblos 14
The Braves were up 28-0, with less than 5 minutes left in the game, when they surrenderred a pair of late TD passes to the Chargers. The scores, made with 4:32 & 0:34 respectively still on the clock, were not enough to overcome the Braves' advantage.
