GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
It was a tough night for many of the LPL teams Thursday, as most of the squads played their season openers.

SLO: Jessica Chellsen and Elizabeth Culpepper 10 kills each.

Righetti 3, Lompoc 1 [25-13, 25-13, 18-25, 25-21 ]
Lompoc: Erika Slikker - six kills.

Bearcats: Maria Petiy swept the two sets she played (6-2,6-1); doubles teams Nicole Evenson/Riley Carwana (6-2, 6-3, 7-6) & Maddi Coons/ Elli Bernal (7-5, 6-3, and 6-2)
each swept three sets.

Coast Union 11, Santa Maria 7
Broncos took 7 0f 9 singles sets - Alex Zargosa (3), Nikki Anderson (2), Rubi Martinez (2).

Orcutt Academy 14, Pioneer Valley 4
Freelance school Orcutt Academy played its first-ever varsity girls tennis match at Pioneer Valley. The JV Spartans, 16-1 last year, defeated the only varsity unit (Dunn) they faced.

Spartans singles players - # 1 single Josalin Vais, #2 Kasey Ortiz, & #3 freshman Sarai Aguirre, each won two of three sets. Aguirre clinching the match with a 6-0 win for the 10th point. Panther junior Caitlin Brown, 4th in the 2009 Pac-7 Singles Tourny, swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, # 1 tandem Ari Mariscal/ Alyssa Zepeda ran their career doubles team record to 47-0, with a two set sweep (6-0, 6-0). #2 pair Nicky Lay/ Zoe Hull swept three sets (6-2, 6-0, 6-0), while at #3 Alyssa Leventis/ Kiki Steele went two-for-three , and substitute duo Alex Lopez/ Maddie Seeds took their only set. Panther partners Ryan Martin/ Victoria Garcia collected the other point with a 6-2 doubles victory.

Santa Maria 11, @ Coast Union 7
Santa Maria’s doubles tandems (Eunice Gonzalez/Elizabeth Queja, Mitzi Esteves/Mae Roma, Lupe Garcia/Star Torrez) lost just 24 games in sweeping all nine sets.

St. Joseph 10, @ Santa Ynez 8
St. Joseph sweeps at both #1 (Christine Noe/ Whitney Bouquet) and #2 (Paige Jaeckels/ Brittany Chartier) doubles helped offset Pirate Emily Ineman three-set sweep in singles.
St. Joseph's Frankie Eszes, 2009 Los Padres League singles champion, withdrew after one set due injury.

@ Arroyo Grande 18, Nipomo 0
Eagles: #3 singles player Lauren Hayashi, lost one game in three sets, and #1 Mia McKinstry, lost two games in three sets. Sister doubles duo, Stephanie Domako/ Amber Domako, won their two sets 6-0, 6-0.

BOYS WATER POLO

Atascadero 9, Cabrillo 6
After a scoreless first quarter, Atascadero scored three times in the second, and had pushed the lead to three by the start of the fourth quarter. Cabrillo closed the gap, but the Greyhounds scored twice more to close out the contest.

Greyhound scorers: Eric Degama (3), Chad Ponek (3), Chris Driesdach, Chris Cunningham, Austin Miller.

Titans: Cole Holloway - 5 goals; Brennan Bryant - 4 goals; J.W. Dobbe -3 goals; Kirk Wilenius -12 saves.

Santa Ynez 12, Paso Robles 11
The Bearcats couldn't hold off the late-charing Pirates in the season debuts for both units. Paso Robles was up 7-2 at halftime, and led 11-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, but lost it on a goal with 19 seconds remaining. Paso Robles: Austin McCall - 4 goals; Spencer Silva - 3 goals.



Morro Bay at San Luis Obispo
The game has been rescheduled to Sept. 23 at 4:30 p.m. after Sinsheimer Pool was shut down for unknown reasons.
