Braves, Saints Down to the Wire - Doubled 21 Sep 10

The Lompoc Braves and the Santa Maria Saints have a long history of athletic competition, but rarely have the had a day like this one. The Saints traveled over the hill to LHS for match-ups between the girls tennis and volleyball squads and both contests were decided in the last set.

Meanwhile the Cabrillo girls attempted to upset LPL conventional wisdom by knocking off the visiting Santa Ynez Pirates in the same two sports, and the Conquistador boys water polo unit tried to quell the upstart St Joseph Knights at the COLAC downtown. In other action girls golf hosted Santa Maria at VCC (No Results yet).

Tuesday Results

LPL Girls Volleyball
Lompoc 3, Santa Maria 2 [Story - scroll down]
[25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 25-11, 15-8]
This was a dandy, as Lompoc moved into an early tie for the LPL lead !! The girls rallied after dropping a pair of close games, by going on a big run in game 4, and repeatedly holding off Saints charges in the capper. Lompoc had numerous opportunities to fold in this one, and simply refused to do so. The Braves were powered by Erika Slikker's thunderous kills, the great hitting of Jess Brundy, Elayna Hockett, & Crystal Grover, Casey Stumpo's super serving, marvelous setting by Danielle Hamon & Gabbie Armero, and the tremendous defensive work of Libero Christina Inda.

Santa Ynez 3, Cabrillo 1
[25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-13]

The Pirates [7-6, 1-0] probably aren't as good as last year, but a notch below sensational is still pretty good. SY: Rachel Szellzer - 15 assists, Dalanee Stapp - 42 assists at setter. Cabrillo falls to 0-3, 0-1.

@ Templeton (3-2, 1-0) 3, Morro Bay 2
[Set scores unavailable.]
Eagles: Natalie Madson - 16 kills; Jeanine Madson - 11 kills, 7 aces; Natalie Maloney - 26 digs.

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 2, Santa Maria 1
[25-19, 31-33, 15-10]
The Braves pulled off a rare double victory, but this one wasn't easy either. The 15 extra points in the 2nd set and the tie-breaker pushed back the varsity start time, but the crowd was treated to some wonderful volleyball.

Santa Ynez 2, Cabrillo 0

LPL Girls Tennis
Santa Maria 10, (81), Lompoc 8 (84)
The Braves needed 2 of the last 3 sets, and then needed the last one, but came up short, despite winning more games than the Saints. It was a tale of missed opportunities and two halves for the locals. They went 0-4 in sets decided by extra games and while they had a significant (6-3) advantage in singles, they were 2-7 in doubles. That singles advantage is named Sameeha Husayn - she sweept her three sets 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Nicole Nomany (6-3, 5-7, 6-0) added 2 points.

Santa Ynez 15, Cabrillo 3
The Conqs (1-2, 0-1) were somewhat competitive in the early going, but were soon run over by the 'Emily Express' and her cohorts. The Express, #1 singles player Emily Ineman, fresh off her NSBCART Female Athlete of the Week award, swept 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. The Pirates (2-4, 1-0) also recieved sweeps from #1 (Bianca Capasso/ Kylie Petersen) & #2 (Heather Vellekamp/ Mylee Curtis) doubles. Exchange student Magdalena Fobikova took two sets for Cabrillo.

Santa Ynez JV 10, Cabrillo JV 8
The Cabrillo JV did make thing quite interesting - pushing SY hard, but falling just short.

Templeton 12, Morro Bay 6
Eagles: Doubles - Shelby Baum/ Nicole Roberts 3-0, Mimi Kline/ Sammar Smesme 3-0; Singles - Erin Roberts & Danielle Grassi won 2 sets apiece.

Orcutt Acad. 12, Nipomo 6
The Titans (0-5), who continue to look for their first win of the season, took 6 of 9 singles sets, but were white-washed in doubles. Tessa Underwood and frosh Kelly Burnett (6-2, 6-3, 1-6) each accounted for 2 points.

Boys Water Polo
Cabrillo 12, St Joseph 6 [Story]
This was not your typical Conq conquest. Cabrillo fell behind 3-0, then 5-1, before a Brayson Ogan goal with 0:17 left in the first period got the locals back within three. Cabrillo then woke up and outscored the Knights 10-1 over the remainder of the game, including a 5-1 advantage in the 3rd. It was 5-5 at the half.

Knight keeper Nolan Krause had 17 saves (6 in each of the 2nd & 3rd quarters), and Felix Talkin had 8 saves in goal for the Conquistadors.

Scorers
Cabrillo: Brayson Ogan 4, Aaron Hay 4, Marcus Thiel 2, Nick Hines, Anthony Taylor.
