"But I don't want to be a target."

Thursday we had the start of LPL Girls Golf and Girls Volleyball, including a BIG surprise. Girls Tennis continued LPL play, Boys Water Polo saw several LPL/Pac7 contests, and there 3 local Frosh/JV football games.

LPL GIRLS GOLF

Jenny Andreas is a petite and personable Santa Ynez High School senior. On Thursday she also demonstrated calm efficiency, some steely nerves, and a pretty good golf game. She battled the course, the elements- it was a tad windy, and tough opposition to take Medalist Honors (47) in the first LPL event of the season. Jennifer Baltimore (Morro Bay) was in the same foursome and fought her down the stretch, but came up a stroke short. Cabrillo's Karen Santamaria was two groups back on the course, but was also just one stroke back in the scoring column.

Andreas, a 3 year player for the Pirates, acknowledged the conditions were difficult, but just barely - rating the course difficulty on the day as "maybe a seven". While conceding that she had established herself as the player to beat in the LPL, that wasn't her priority - "I don't want to be a target, I just want to have fun out there." And though she said it with a hint of a pout and a bit of a feigned whine, I believe her. I also believe that Miss Andreas regards winning as a lot of fun.

Cabrillo and Nipomo tied for the team title, but the Conquistadores had the better 6th score. Santa Ynez took the 3rd spot.

Neither Varsity Head Coach Aaron Batula nor JV helm Monie Thomas were happy with their teams performances, apart from the 1st game of each match. Both units need to clean up mistakes an improve their consistency, according to the coaches. Conversely, the Frosh actually played better in game 2.
