" Ya Shoulda Been Here Earlier"

Girls Volleyball

The Varsity match certainly had its moments, but the last game of the Frosh match and all three JV games had a bunch of folks buzzing, and more than one late arrival was told - " Ya Shoulda Been Here Earlier".

Both teams, along with coaches, staff, fans, etc. were attired in various forms of pink raiment in honor of Cabrillo's 'Pink Game" fundraiser for Breast Cancer research and treatment. Perhaps the most dedicated ones though were the boys basketball team who came adorned in pink body paint.

Varsity
Cabrillo 3, Lompoc 0     STORY
[25-12, 25-16, 25-11]

Lompoc played well, but Brianna Farley & Lauren Pluim were unstoppable. Those two play inspired defense and aggresive offense. Soph sensations Fallon Wynne (CHS) and Chyenne Thomas (LHS) mostly cancelled each other out, but it's gonna be a whole lotta fun watching those two battle for the next few years.

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 2Cabrillo 1
[25-22, 21-25, 15-9]
Game 1 was a tight affair. How close was it? Well, the biggest lead of the contest was 3 points and each team managed to accomplish it only two or three times. Cabrillo struck first, scoring the initial point and extending the margin to 5-2, before the Braves eased back. After an ace and an Angel LaShore kill put Lompoc out front 7-5, Cabrillo called a time out. The Braves pushed out to a 10-7 advantage, but Cabrillo reeled them back in, and it was 10-10 when Lompoc called for a break.

Cabrillo took the next 3 points for a 13-10 differential, but the Braves kept within a point or two, eventually knotting it up at 18 all. The Conqs took a timeout and briefly rallied, but Lompoc again closed the gap with Arianna Espinosa hitting consecutive kills to tie it up at 21-21. A Yoshie Montelongo kill, some Cabrillo mistakes, and a Yolanda Aguiano ace enabled the visitors to close out the set.

Game 2 was more of the same. Only this time there were 4 point leads. Lompoc took an 8-4 lead but were caught by the Conqs for ties at 8, 9, and 10. The Braves surged again, for their 2nd 4 point margin - 16-12. Cabrillo's Madison McNamee took over a that point, however. She rattled off a 9 serve series that saw the Conqs take a 5 point advantage 21-16. The Braves took the next point to cut it back to four, even narrowing it to two (22-20), but never caught up.

Game 3 saw several surges, as well. Lompoc went up 3-0, and Cabrillo tied them at 3. The Braves got a nice service run from Montelongo for an 8-3 margin, but a net roller return and a McNamee ace cut the differential to three. However, back-to-back net violations gave those points back immediately. A Lompoc kill and an ace made the score 12-6. Cabrillo tried to rally, shaving the score to 12-9, but kills by Angel LaShore (1) and Arianna Espinosa (2) ended the match.

Freshmen
Cabrillo 2, Lompoc 0
[25-13, 25-22]
Cabrillo roared out to a series of big leads in Game 1 (17-6, 21-7), but couldn't put a crisp finish on the Braves. Lompoc hung around awhile and, assisted by back-to-back Marena Lundy aces, out scored the Conqs 6-4 at the end of the game.

Lompoc actually was first out of the gate in Game 2, posting 3-0 and 6-3 leads, then Katie Folk stepped to the service line. She served 9 consecutive times, and when the Braves finally got the ball back after a shanked pass, they were down 11-7. A succession of servers managed to put together 2-3 point runs taking Cabrillo to a big 21-12 lead. Game over, right? Umm, not quite. It was just getting interesting.

A kill on each side, along with another point for the Braves and it was 22-14, but Folk was back serving. A good serve ended in a Cabrillo point (23-14) and surely it was over now. Aaah, still no. A Conq net violation gave the serve back to Lompoc, but the Braves missed a shot to give it right back along with match point at 24-15. Done yet? Nope. Diana Herrera was the next server up and she lead a Lompoc rally that gave the Cabrillo bench a seriously high pucker factor.

Herrera's first serve was a tractor shot that climbed over the net tape and fell in for a ace. Ehh, Ok, lucky shot, still 24-17. The next serve the Conqs missed on the return, followed by Herrera dropping an ace right on the sideline. 24-19. Cabrillo returned the next one, but Jaslyn Villagomez tipped it back over the net for another Lompoc point - 24-20. Really?!? Cabrillo Time OUT ! Settle down, get one point and we are done - OK, ladies? Nope again. Herrera dropped in a beautiful old-style ace for 24-21, and then did it again !! 24-22. A Braves miss finally ended the match, but both coaching staffs probably could have used some blood pressure medication.

In addition to the aforementioned girls, Cabrillo Coach Brittany Skinner also praised the play of Natalie Kovach ("awesome serving") and Kailey Stevens ("all-around good play, and dominated the front row").
