Thursday Was a Good Day for Cabrillo

Football

at Huyck Stadium
Cabrillo 55, Santa Maria 20  STORY

Don Willis, Saints Head Coach and the Conquistadors Defensive Coordinator last year, couldn't have been thrilled with the 'defense' he saw early in this one. It had the wags in the press box talking about it being a 'defensive struggle' - as in, "a struggle to find any".

The first half was a competition to see who could have the most plays bust wide open at the line of scrimmage. Cabrillo's Bryce Moses collected 198 of his 300+ yards (26 carries) and 3 of his 4 TD's mostly on simple off tackle and pitch plays. Santa Maria's Dominique Garrett, meanwhile, was throwing quick bubble screens to his wide-outs who were then off to the races - and the end zone. There was some appearance of defense in the 2nd half as the Conqs outscored the Saints 27-0.

On a somber note, several of the Santa Maria players had to leave the game due to injury, including one who had to be transported by ambulance late in the 4th quarter. However Coach Willis was able to report after the game that the prognosis for each of those injured were good. Stating that the individual was taken to the hospital only as a precaution.

It was open season on the winless doggies on Wednesday. While Cabrillo led 8-0 after one, and 11-1 at halftime, bad goal tending wasn't the problem for the group from up north. The Conqs had another dozen shots saved plus 2 each off the posts and crossbar. The stifling Cabrillo defense created turnovers, break-a-ways, and a multitude of other opportunities. Gavin Kilgore also had 8 stops for the Conqs in the 1st half, including a 5-meter penalty.

Cabrillo (6-3): Goals - Nick Matulis 5, Eduardo Cardenas 5, Noah Caro 3, Brett Gordan 2, plus one each for Joel Lawson, Alfredo Navarro, Ben Wulfsteig, and Cannon Creese. Kilgore had about a dozen saves and Cody Stevens added a few more in the 4th quarter.

Greyhounds: Goals - David Hernandez 2, Andrew Sedley 1, Jack Fischer 1. Saves - Matt Buckingham 13.

Remember the name Dylan Hughes. He dominated the pool, scoring 9 goals and doing innumerable other things to lead the Greyhounds to victory. Five other players each scored one goal apiece for the visitors. Cabrillo received goals from Zach Cole and Steven Eisen.

The coaches agreed that it could have, and perhaps should have, been closer. Cabrillo Head Coach MaryBeth Steiber posited "The score didn't reflect how well they (SM) played, especially in doubles." Saints Head Coach Ginny Barnett stated that while her squad was "Technically sound and understood tennis strategy, Cabrillo just caused us to make too many unforced errors." Summing it up with "We just didn't execute very well today - at all."

Conqs : Singles (8-1) - Kelsey Atkin 3-0 (6-1,6-0,6-0); Rikky Patel 2-0 (6-1,6-1), Dasha Williams 0-1 (2-6); Julie de Vonage 3-0 (6-3,6-1,7-5). Doubles (8-1) - Audriana Laporte/Kayla Sandoval 3-0 (6-3,6-2,6-3); Morgan Coffin/Alex Siefe 2-0 (6-3,6-3), Morgan Coffin/Emily Wasson 1-0 (6-1); Krystel Delos Reyes/Maddie McDonough 2-1 (2-6,6-4,6-2).

Saints (3-4, 2-3 LPL): Singles - Hannah Lindgren 0-2, Jocelyn Gil 0-1; Caija McNeil 0-3; Brittany Gomez 0-1, Leslie Huitron 1-1. Doubles - Daisy Lomeli/Sussana Reyes 1-2; Jade Dodson/Monica Hernandez 0-3; Elvia Martinez/Shara Natividad 0-3.

Doug Meeder took his usual nine member contingent with him on the road - which was unfortunate, because they really could have used some subs. As it was, all the starters had to stay in the match and everyone swept.

Don Willis wasn't the only one to coach against their alma mater on the LHS campus on Thursday. Nipomo Head Coach Casey Wright, Lompoc High School Class of 1995, brought his burel-clad blushets to battle at Bickmore.

The Braves have relied on their singles all year, and they came through yet again. Marielle Tabin & the Gracyk sisters gave Lompoc a big enough advantage to overcome a narrow loss in doubles.

Braves : Singles (7-2) - Emily Gracyk 3-0 (6-1,6-4,6-2); Marielle Tabin 2-1 (6-0,1-6,6-2); Erica Gracyk 2-1 (6-1,4-6,6-4). Doubles (4-5) - Janett Ruiz/Mariana Soto 2-1 (4-6,6-4,6-3); Collette Campitelli/Genesis Garza 2-1 (1-6,6-3,6-0); Melanie Esparza/Marisol Villalobos 0-3 (4-6,1-6,1-6).
Titans : Singles - Monica Guerrero 0-2, Diana Kirchevsky 0-1; Kelly Springford 2-1; Kelly Barrett 0-3. Doubles - Gianna Abatti/Nicole Johnson  3-0, Bekah Archambeault/Ashley Jimenez 1-2; Devan Newberry/Maria Alcantar 1-2.

This one was about as close as one can get to even. Each of the three rounds was tied 3-3, and the Braves lost it, according to Coach Jim Steffey, due to "too many 6-0's".

Girls Golf

LPL Tournament #2
at the Morro Bay Golf Club (9 holes)
After tying Nipomo for the title in the initial LPL tourney last week, the Cabrillo girls were just a little bit miffed. They rectified the situation on Thursday with a convincing win over the rest of the league. Last week only 3 of 36 girls shot in the 40's, but on this occasion all the Conq scorers did so. They also had yet another player step forward to lead the squad, as Roselei Redrick posted the team low this time out.  Jennifer Baltimore (MB) was the Medalist on her home course, scoring a 40 and easily outpacing the field.

Cabrillo [232]: Roselei Redrick 44, Karen Santamaria 46, Jacqueline McDonough 46, Gaby Baumgardner 47, Christina Sawyer 49, Kelsie Merrick 57.

Nipomo [243]: Ashley Ruiz 46, Courtney Cuzick 48, Christine Delaby 49, Ashley Gonzales 50, Destiny Fryckman 50, Paige Johnson 54.
