Beware, All Ye Who Enter the Valley ...

... Outside the Valley - Not so much. Here, however, five teams entered, five teams lost. None of them were all that close. Nipomo came to contest the leadership of the LPL at the VCC, the other four represented the Morro Bay Pirates.

Nipomo came to town looking to loosen the locals grip on the LPL Title, but Cabrillo had one of their best across the board performances for a comfortable win. Competing on her home circuit, Jacky McDonough, took the Medalist Honors with a 42. Roselei Redrick (49) had one of her better scores of the season, and Gaby Baumgardner was 2nd overall with a personal best of 46. Kelsie Merrick was just a stroke off her PB, set several weeks ago at Santa Ynez. And in the JV ranks, Devan McCune ripped 6 strokes off her previous best score by posting a 56. Courtney Cuzick led the Titans with a 47.

Cabrillo [247]: Jacky McDonough 42, Karen Santamaria 55, Roselei Redrick 49, Gaby Baumgardner 46 (PB), Kelsie Merrick 55, Christina Sawyer 57. Alternates - Bailey Belluz 62, Raquel Caballero 64. JV (9 holes) - Devan McCune - 56.

Titans [269]: Courtney Cuzick 47, Paige Johnson 57, Ashley Ruiz 51, Christine DeLaby 57, Ashley Gonzales 57, Destiny Fryckman 60. Alternate - Erin Shusterrich 62.

It looked like the Conquistadors might run away and hide with this one after an early romp in game 1, but the Pirates quickly took a series of leads in part 2. They led 12-8 before Cabrillo managed a side-out to cut the margin to 3 and send Nikki Friend to the service line. She served 12 straight times, the streak finally ending when a Conq kill went just wide down the right-hand line, but the damage was done. Cabrillo led 20-13.

After a Carli Watt ace, the Conqs got the ball back on a Jamie Miller kill, and the combo of Brianna Farley serving & Lauren Pluim at the net, soon put an end to any Pirate rally thoughts. Farley had an ace and lots of thunder in her offerings, and Pluim had 2 kills plus one of her many 'intimidations'. She probably had a dozen of those during the match.

Game three was close early with ties at 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9, before the Cabrillo was able to create a little bit of distance with a 4 point lead. Morro Bay stormed back for another tie (at 16 all), but the Conqs scored 9 of the next 10 points to close it out 25-17. The last two points being aces by Miller.

Cabrillo Head Coach Jim Hilliard was generally pleased with the team's performance, especially the "great job distributing the ball" by Nikki Friend. He attributed much of their success to good control and ball movement, and their problems in game 2 to their temporary absence.

Cabrillo: Nikki Friend 23 assists and tremendous serving: Jamie Lee Miller 8 attacks, 2 kills, several aces; Fallon Wynne 6 kills; Brianna Farley 8 kills, 4 aces; Marissa Reyna 2 kills, Lauren Pluim 8 kills, 13 digs.

The Braves saw this one slip away as their problems in doubles couldn't be overcome by a dominant singles performance.

Pirates [4-5 LPL, 5-7]: Singles (1-8) - No Details Provided. Doubles (9-0) -  Claire Vogel/Skye Schwellenbach 3-0 (7-5, 6-2, 6-1), Sarah Keas/June Janzen 3-0 (6-1, 6-3, 6-1).

Last time these two tangled, it was an 18-0 whitewash in favor of the Braves at Morro Bay. Today the Pirates faced a few more difficulties. Since they shared the bus with the volleyball team, they arrived at LHS just before the match started and had very little warm-up, but more importantly they arrived with only 8 competitors meaning that they had to forfeit 3 sets at number 3 singles before the contest even got underway.

Lompoc then won the 1st round 5-0, surrendering only 7 games in the process. Lompoc Coach Jim Steffey then began extensive substitution in round 2.

Braves: Lompoc used 5 players in singles action and another 15 (8 different pairs) in doubles. Karina Cervantes (#1 Singles) won 2 sets, as did the Chavez sisters - Carmen & Ofelia - as substitutes at #2 doubles.
Pirates : Singles - Kathleen Thompson 1-2 (2-6, 6-1, 4-6); Gina Spaglione 0-3 (0-6, 1-6, 4-6). Doubles [Scorers] - Holly Jacobsen/Darian Holahan; Kaeli Coxwell/Fiona Napuit.
