We had regular season volleyball, league tournament water polo, and CIF Playoff girls tennis on Tuesday.

The "Wacky Wubble-U's" Ready to Leap Into Action

Girls Tennis

at Cabrillo HS
Cabrillo 18, Palmdale 0

In a match that lasted about an hour and 45 minutes, there is not often a lot of good news. The good news in this one was that everybody played, the better news was that the Conquistadors rolled. Everybody that wasn't subbed for swept. Cabrillo also received 2 points from the "Super Subs". Kaeli Jones won her match 6-4, and the 'Wacky Wubble-U's', Morgan Williams/Emily Wasson, took their doubles set 6-1. With the win Cabrillo advances to a tough contest on Wednesday at Orcutt Academy [17-3].

The young Palmdale squad (3 seniors) had to break up one of their better doubles teams before the match, when one of the girls was unable to make the trip. Her erstwhile partner played #3 singles.

Both teams substituted extensively in the 3rd round. Cabrillo replaced both the #2 singles and #2 doubles. Palmdale did the same, but went one step further by also replacing their #3 singles player.

Girls Volleyball

at Cabrillo HS
Cabrillo 3, Nipomo 0
[25-17, 26-24, 25-20]

On Senior Night for Cabrillo, the Conquistadors pulled off their 2nd straight upset. An elated Jim Hilliard, Cabrillo's Head Coach, was telling all and sundry, "What a way to finish off the season - beat the #1 and the #2." Coaching pragmatism soon took over, however, as he soon amended the statement to - "finish the regular season". Asked about his players late season surge heading into the playoffs, he acknowledged that they were playing very well, but added "I just wish they had figured it out sooner."

They have, at last, seeming 'figured it out' as they not only beat, but clearly frustrated, a very good Nipomo team in straight sets. Especially in Game 2 when, they were down 12-18 and came back to win it 26-24. Cabrillo also fell behind several times in Game 3, but exuded confidence, calm, and poise. They just kept sending the ball back over and letting the Titans make the mistakes - including a surprising amount of service errors.

This wasn't entirely accidental. Coach Hilliard had tried to  keep practices this past week "Calm and cool, and just let them play". He did tinker with a few things though, both in practice and with in game adjustments. Particularly, he changed up the defense a bit, modifying the return game. It worked. "We kept getting touches on the ball, and that messes with the minds of the hitters." , he stated. And the offense ? "We got some great hits and dinks."

Conqs [8-4 LPL]: Megan Love 20 digs; Nikki Friend 25 assists, 6 digs; Lauren Pluim 8 kills (22 attks), 27 digs, 3 aces; Brianna Farley 9 kills (15 attks), 7 blks (4 solo), 15 digs; Fallon Wynne 6 kills (13 attks); Jaime Miller 3 kills (9 attks), 3 aces, 3 blk assts; Marissa Reyna 2 kills (8 attks).

Titans [9-3 LPL]: Christina Ozzimo 28 assists; Paige Waymire 15 kills; Taylor Nevitt 10 kills, 2 blks; Sarah Stahl 31 digs; Megan Penaflor 3 aces, 2 digs.

Other LPL Team Games

One of the difficulties of coaching is that much of what happens is out of your control. Ironically enough, the Playoffs alleviate this situation somewhat. Playoffs are very simple - win or go home. It's all on your squad. League contests, on the other hand, still contain the kernel of doubt caused by your fate sometimes resting on teams over which you have no control, playing miles away from where you are. So after some deserved celebration with his team and fans, Cabrillo Coach Jim Hilliard quickly turned his attention to a pivitol question. "Hey, does anybody know if Templeton beat Santa Ynez?" The difference between 3rd and 4th place hanging in the balance. Unfortunately for Hilliard's crew, the Pirates snatched victory from the Templeton Eagles, relegating Cabrillo to 4th place and a long CIF bus ride.
