Not a lot in the Middle (15 Sep 2016) [Final]

Thursday, 15 September 2016

There was not a lot of room in the middle on Thursday, the highs and lows were pretty extreme.

This was one of the few 'middle' parts of the day - lots of ties. Two-way ties atop both the individual and team leaderboards. Cabrillo tied with Santa Ynez for the team title, while the Medalist's crown was split between Lompoc's Kendal Martin and SY Pirate Eva Hennessee.

Cabrillo are defending LPL Champs, while one-time powerhouse, Santa Ynez enjoyed a league tournament title for the first time in 4 years.

Will Heath-clock operator for the JV game.
"If you want to beat the Bearcats, you better stop #10."
Cabrillo did exactly that Thursday afternoon, play a tough defense without fouling, and frustrating 2-meter man Jakob Dewhurst and, indeed, the entire Paso offense for much of the game.

Josh Rowe, Will Heath, and Olat Luna led a swarming defense that turned Paso into No Paso. Heath at 2M defense with frequent help, often from Rowe, completely shutdown a visibly upset Dewhurst.

For the first 3 minutes of the initial period, neither side could score, PR had trouble moving the ball, and Cabrillo sent several shots wide. John Nash finally broke the ice for the Paso Robles with a nice shot at the 4:02 mark.

Following Bearcat exclusions, Deven Rosales and Rowe would score later in the term, while Conq goalkeeper Dennis Thomas also closed the net for business during the rest of the half.

Both squads again went dormant to start the 2nd. The quarter was nearly 3 minutes gone, before Cabrillo broke the match open with 3 goals in 57 seconds - two by Heath and one by Rosales. Rosales would strike again with just under a minute remaining to give the hosts a 6-1 halftime lead.

The dead period returned in the third quarter, until the teams exchanged goals with a little over 3 minutes left. Will Heath struck at 3:20 and Mason Steiner returned the favor 14 seconds later. The sides reversed order soon after, with Zack Tucker leading off at 1:37 followed 14 seconds later by Rowe. Heath finished with another at the 40 second mark, and there was a flurry of saves at each end of the pool before the buzzer.

The Conqs opened scoring in the 4th with an Isaac Thomas tally just over a minute into the period pushing the margin to seven (10-3). The Bearcats finally got untracked against some of the subs mid-way through the quarter, bracketing goals by John Nash & Zack Tucker a few seconds on either side of the 4:30 mark.

Brandon Halebski dropped one in at 2:05 to make things interesting. Rowe soon answered and Isaac Thomas struck again with under a minute on the clock.

ConquistadoresGoals - Will Heath 4, Deven Rosales 3, Rowe 3, Thomas 2

Saves - Jason Line 3, Kyle Hoffman 4.

Conqs: Goals - Chris Compos 3, Zack Marshall 3, Corbyn Hill 2, Travis Blackstone, Morgan Marlatt.

It could have been worse. For instance the Braves, already up 35-0, had the ball
at the Dons two yard line but let the 1st half expire instead.

On Tuesday, the T-town Eagles were swept at home by Santa Ynez . Thursday, Lompoc received a measure of retribution for the Pirates effrontery. The Varsity Braves actually played pretty well at times, but Templeton always seemed to have one more shot left.

Game 2: Lompoc managed a side out a few points in, but fell behind 15-1, as Maddie Johnson served 11 in a row. Braves played better after a time out (14-10 down the stretch) but could not make up the deficit.

Against Lompoc on Tuesday, the Spartans had trouble maintaining momentum. Thursday, they were much better. Using great serving, including a reported 33 aces, they were able to execute extensive point streaks throughout the match,
earning their first victory of the year over a short-handed Saint squad.

Spartan junior Yesenia Zacarias stepped to the line in the fourth set, with her team up 3-1, when they finally lost the serve, they led 17-1. She served 14 consecutive points, including 5 aces and was aided by 3 kills from Jessie Jin.

In set #1, Sierra Troup served five consecutive aces, and Troup also served seven straight points (6 aces) to start the third set.

However, Saisha Kahae started the 2nd with four straight service points for Santa Maria. She and Jackie Espinoza then hit well enough to ensure that OA couldn't get back into contention despite Zacarias previewing her later streak, by serving four aces in game 2.
