Mt SAC and CoLAC [25-26 Oct]

Fri/Sat, 25-26 October, 2013

Cross Country

The Lompoc Girls Team got to stay home and train.
Mt SAC Invitational
at Mount San Antonio College, Walnut, CA (Eastern LA County)

Mt SAC bills itself as the "World's Largest Cross Country Invitational" for a reason. This year they held 124 races for the high school level, including 26 for Division 3 (The Div that both Lompoc & Cabrillo are in). Those were divied up into Sweepstakes (7), Sub-Sweep Varsity (2), and 17 "Regular" races. The Regular races involved 6 Varsity (3B, 3G), 3 JV (2B, 1G), 4 Soph (2B, 2G), and 4 Frosh (2B, 2G).

Cabrillo sent both Boys & Girls squads to the meet, and the Lompoc Boys also attended. The Lompoc Girls, however, did not go.  Coach Rich Zellers decided that since the Mt SAC course is quite hilly and next week's LPL Finals course is 'flat as a pancake', he didn't want his young squad to have to try and adjust to multiple conditions in a short space of time. The Braves are on the CIF qualification bubble, with the LPL Finals the determinant.

Both the CIF Prelims and Finals are held at Mt SAC, but as Zellers said on Thursday, "We'll deal with that when we need to".

Boys Results

Lompoc's Luis De La Palma posted the best time, a 16:31, while placing 8th in his Varsity race, but Anthony Tyler (Cabrillo, 16:32, 9th) was just 1 second & 1 place back.

Cameron Hernandez (Cabrillo) took 1st in his Soph race with a 16:37 time.

In other news, while he was competing in this meet, Cabrillo's Dane Munar was announced as the 2013 Homecoming King at the Homecoming morning assembly.

Boys Water Polo

Cabrillo JV Tournament
at the City of Lompoc Aquatic Center

Cabrillo split in twain and hosted 6 other squads at their annual JV tourney. The teams were initially divided into 2 4-team pools.

Pool A: CHS Black, Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Lompoc
Pool B: CHS Gold, Nipomo, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo

On Friday, each team played two games. The first was against an assigned team from their pool, and then the two winners and the two losers in each pool were paired.

Saturday, teams were ranked in each pool (A to D) and assigned to play a team from the other pool, the winners then played winners & the losers played losers.

Quarters were 5 minutes in regulation, 3 minutes for overtime, but the overtimes were 1st goal wins.

SLO raced past  Nipomo with a 6-0 4th Quarter on Friday
Friday, 25 Oct, 2013

G4 (B3 v B4): Santa Maria 3, SLO 17
San Luis received scores from 7 players led by Liam Donley's 4, Jared Curtis had 2 for the Saints.

G5 (W1 v W3): Arroyo Grande 15, Atascadero 1
Ryan Meffert had 4 to lead 8 Eagles in the scoring column, and Scott Holloway got 1 in the 4th to get the bagel off the board for Atascadero.

G6 (L 1 v L 3): CHS Black 8, Lompoc 9
Knotted 1 all after the 1st, CHS Black eased out to a 4-3 halftime advantage when Saxon Morris tallied 3 in the 2nd. They maintained the margin as both sides scored 3 goals in the 3rd period, but Lompoc won it in the 4th when Austin Nixa netted the final 3 of his 7 goals. Morris finished with 4.

G7 (W2 v W4): Nipomo 8, SLO 12
The Titans led 8-6 through 3 periods, but SLO outpaced them 6-0 in the 4th, when Liam Donley had 3 of his 4 tallies.

G  9 (A1 v B2): Arroyo Grande 12, Nipomo 0
The Eagles played like they had something to prove to the Titans. Ethan Mankins had a clean slate in goal, and 7 players scored for AG.

G10 (B1 v A2): SLO 14, Atascadero 6
Ian Quinn had 5 of his 6 goals in the 1st period, Jaimo Johnson added 4 more for the Tigers. Scott Holloway had 3 to lead the Greyhounds.

G11 (A3 v B4): Lompoc 10, Santa Maria 6
Lompoc led 4-0 after the 1st, and maintained the margin with a 5-1 advantage at halftime. The Saints got within 2 points in the 4th, but the teams were even in the 2nd half. The Braves had 6 players score.

G12 (B3 v A4): CHS Gold 13, CHS Black 8
The Gold team went up 9-1 with just over a minute remaining in the 3rd, and coasted to the win. Varsity fill-in Sam Reep was in goal, and Michael Wulfestieg had 4 goals for the Gold.

G13 (W9 v W10): Arroyo Grande 19, SLO 5 (Championship)
Alex Mihaula tallied 3 for the Tigers, but that was equaled by 4 Eagles, including Mike Kullman's 4.

G14 (L 9 v L 10): Nipomo 16, Atascadero 2 (3rd Place)
The Titans got 6 goals from Colby Webb, all in the 1st half, plus 3 each from Luke Sparks and Matt Dalburg. Eight of the 12 Titans scored.

G15 (W11 v W12): Lompoc 1, CHS Gold 10 (Consolation Champ)
Nick Robles got one for the Braves to make it 5-1 in the 2nd, but 4 players scored 2-3 times each for Cabrillo.

G16 (L 11 v L 12): CHS Black 11, Santa Maria 12 [OT]
CHS Black was down 11-4 at the 0:51 mark of the 3rd Quarter when the Saints were called for a 5M penalty shot. Saxon Morris hit the shot, and the Conqs then scored twice more in the 3rd & 4 times in the 4th to force overtime.

Cabrillo got the ball to start the OT period, but an errant pass in the middle of the line-up was snagged by Angel Montenegro who broke away for 'Golden Goal' to win it. Montenegro led the Saints with 3 goals, Morris paced Cabrillo with 8.

It appeared that CHS Black might pull out a win in the tournament's final game, when their defense pressure enabled them to get back into the contest. They overcame an 11-4 deficit with plays like this one, but it a very similar play by the Saints in OT that won it.
