Celebration at Cabrillo [19 Dec]

Thursday, 19 December 2013

It was 'Party Time' on the hill. The Varsity Cheer Squad was in a festive mood, and the JV group was dancing. The boys hoops units ran over Morro Bay in an all-level sweep, featuring a pair of Chad Brodhead dunks. Brodhead was honored before the game for reaching the 1000 career point level, and a stalwart from the 2012 team, Michael Woodard, hit a half-court shot at halftime to earn a gift certificate - to the snack bar.

Asst Coach Paul Carter  delivered the Swag to Mid-court.
Chad Brodhead shares a hug with Head Coach Gary West after being presented an inscribed game ball and framed reproductions of the scorebook for the December 14th game against San Luis Obispo.

In that contest Brodhead had 34 points (including shooting 12/12 from the charity stripe), but more importantly surpassed the career 1000 point mark with a free throw in the 3rd period.

Morro Bay at Cabrillo

Cabrillo 70, Morro Bay 31
[Cab 20,25,13,8 - 70   MB 2,13,7,8 - 31]

It was an odd evening. It ran the gamut from a running clock (4th Quarter) to a clock that wouldn't run (3rd). It had coaches in bowties and hot pink ties, players with mohawks, and cheerleaders in 'Santa hats'. But mostly what it had was a stifling Conq defensive effort that completely befuddled a young Morro Bay squad.

It was mostly well played, without a lot of chipiness, but Cabrillo was whistled for 15 fouls, and the Pirates for 17. Many of the calls were due to aggressive defense and kids simply being out of position due to the pace of play.

The Conqs started early, and by design. Head Coach Gary West described Morro Bay as "a wounded team". They limped into town without 5 of their 16 roster players and an 0-10 record. West wanted his charges to come out hard from the start to make sure there was no resurgence from the Pirates -and they did.

They pressured everything almost all the time, leading to numerous turnovers and missed shots. In the first period it seemed like Cabrillo got to nearly every rebound and loose ball. The result was a 20-2 lead at the conclusion of the 1st.

One bright spot for Morro Bay was the play of Solomon Ruddell. The sophomore is listed at 6'9", but was mentioned as being 6'10" or 6'11" (he might have had a growth spurt during the game), and 195 pounds. He is young, inexperienced, and a tad gawky, but still had in the neighborhood of 12 rebounds and 12 blocks. He probably forced at least as many shots to be altered or missed. When he fills out some, and gets everything put together - Watch Out!!

While Ruddell generated some ooohs and aaahs, the two biggest crowd-pleasing moments of the game came at the 6:24 and 3:49 marks of the 3rd period - Chad Brodhead dunked on the south goal.
