It was a gloriously beautiful day at Cabrillo HS on Saturday, and one might easily be confused by all the soccer activity going on without cold blustery winds, fog, or overcast skies. Both CHS soccer programs were in 'action', conducting scrimmages, the Pole Vault pit was also in action, and a succession of both the boys & girls basketball teams practiced in the gym before many of them went outside to watch the soccer - or visit the concession trailer.

Girls Soccer
Girls Soccer Head Coach Derrick Wong assumed the "Voice of God" position up in the stands, while JV Head honcho Cindy Eisen led her squad against the Varsity under the direction of Assistant Brittany Gregory.

The varsity, which was also favored by modified rules, came out on top, but both coaches were generally pleased with the way things went.
Some quick notes:
Varsity
... Wong experimented with a few intriguing formations during the match (i.e. a 1-4-1-1-3), but is likely to stick with a pressing 4-4-2 most of the time.
... He also acknowledged the that the Chaminade Eagles who bounced Lompoc from the football playoffs on Friday, and who had ousted Cabrillo from the girls soccer semifinals last spring were "good in a lot of sports', but didn't see the need to move the Mission League out of the division, saying - "You'll always have to beat somebody good" to win a Championship.
... Coach Wong was also sanguine about the field situation. Although, the condition of the turf at Cabrillo Field was pretty good Saturday, it will no doubt be turned into a soupy mess at some point during the season. He did say that there were plans to work on it AFTER the soccer was done, since the track team will be on the road most of the spring.
... One of the items consuming the time & attention of many soccer coaches this year is the 'point of emphasis' on uniform violations by CIF (Nice synopsis HERE)
The Boys warm up on the JV Field while the Girls play up top. |
... Cabrillo's outstanding Goalkeeper from last year, Kiki Miller, has been moved to the field. She and new GK Rikki Patel, the #1 Singles player on the tennis squad, were 'similar' in goal, but Miller was better in the field and the staff didn't want to put either one of them on the bench. It is a moot point at the moment, however, because Ms. Miller out for probably another week at least due to injury.
Coach Eisen |
... Coach Eisen liked the effort her girls had, and while admitting that they were a bit hesitant and cautious early on, pointed out that they were young and for most of them "this was the 1st time they had been assaulted".
... The GK situation on the JV is also a bit up in the air with Mallory Townsend and Brianna Gonzales both likely to play a half each, although Eisen noted that Townsend would probably start.

The California Pole Vault Club
Though still banged up a bit from football season, etc., 2013 LPL Pole Vault Champ Steven French demonstrates how it's done.
Over at the pole vault pit, just a few dozen yards east of the soccer pitch, a newly formed club team for pole vaulters was practicing for a series of weekend meets. About a half dozen students worked under the watchful eye of the club's coach Russ French.
Sport Newcomer Avonlea McGraw couldn't stop smiling. The 12 year-old cleared 7-6 in her 5th practice. |
The club is sponsoring a clinic on January 2-4, 2014 for anyone 12 and older who would like to learn to vault. No experience is required. On the 4th there will be a competition with t-shirts and prizes for participants, and medals for podium finishers.
