The Sports Weekend [20-21 Dec]

Friday/Saturday,
 20-21 December 2013

We had local soccer action with girls on Friday, and the guys on Saturday, and area schools at the Garces tourney both days. Several Basketball tournaments concluded, and there was also wrestling and water polo action.

Girls Soccer

Arroyo Grande at Cabrillo

MF Natalie Kovach tries to corral a ball late in the 2nd half. The Eagles kept Cabrillo mostly pinned to the sidelines.

Both the Varsity and JV had trouble working the middle of the field versus the Eagles. Both levels posted the same score, and there were no cards issued in either game.

Arroyo Grande 2, Cabrillo 0

[Halftime 0-0]

The Eagles flew into town with a little something to prove, having taken a loss and a tie in their last two outings. They were able to control the mid-field, the ball, and eventually the outcome.

After trying a "New format" for most of the 1st half, Arroyo Grande, who lost 11 seniors from last years team, finally broke a scoreless tie 4 minutes into the 2nd half, when Richelle Knuipper found Kiana Parker with a pass that parker planted in the net. Knuipper repeated the service for Brianna Welch towards the end of the half.

The Cabrillo effort was not helped by the injury absence Rikky Patel (GK), Kiki Miller (F/GK), and Priscilla Angulo (F/MF). In addition to injury moves, the Conqs are also still adjusting to several other moves, such as that of Emma Fienga to Sweeper. Mikaela Thomas had much improved results in her 2nd outing in goal and overall the defense played well.

Eagles [5-1-1]: Goals (Assists) - Kiana Parker (2H-4th, Richelle Knuipper), Brianna Welch (2H-39th, Richelle Knuipper). Goaltending - Kendall Bowers (Whole Game, 3 saves). Other Notable performers - Jo Graeber.

Conqs [0-7]: Goals (Assists) - None. Goaltending - Mikaela Thomas (
Whole Game, 10 saves).

Junior Varsity

Arroyo Grande 2, Cabrillo 0
[Halftime 1-0 Eagles]
\
The Eagles controlled the ball, the pace, and the game. The score could easily have been worse - AG had 3 shots hit the crossbar, but a little luck always helps.

Eagles :
Goals (Assists) - Raquel 'Rocky' Robeson (1H, Ornelya DelaPaz), Ornelya DelaPaz (2H, Gabriella Villafranco).
Goaltending - Samantha Henkel (1H, 3 saves), Kylie Lipanovich (2H, 2 saves).
Other Notable performers - Coach John McGuigan really liked what he saw from his midfielders, and the solid performance from the back four.

Conqs [1-4-1]: Goals (Assists) - None. Goaltending - Brianna Gonzalez (1st H), Carissa Sanchez (2nd H). The two combined for "A whole bunch" of saves according to Cindy Eisen. Coach Eisen praised both girls for their play in the field as well as the net, and noted the continued excellence of F Lili Wood and D Alee Puckett.

Boys Soccer

Cabrillo GK Lucas Derflinger experiences an unusual situation for the day - a bunch of people around. Much of it was spent like the Maytag Repairman.

Cabrillo Hosted

The Conqs had an unusual double on the hill, Saturday. The varsity faced St. Joseph and the JV hosted Orcutt Academy.

Cabrillo 6, St Joseph 1
[Halftime 4-1 Cabrilllo]

It wasn't this close. There were lots of fouls called, but only one yellow was issued. Head Coach James Baca was generally pleased with the way the team played, especially that they maintained defensive focus throughout. He specifically noted the play of freshman Juan Trejo who had been called up, and accounted for a goal and 2 assists. "He may just stay up.", Baca said.

This is a very young St Joe unit - 8 frosh, and 4 sophomores saw extensive playing time.

Conqs : Goals (Assists) - Crisencio Zurita (Juan Trejo), Connor Duffy (Counter/Kenny Barton), Allan Chavez (Raymond Walters to Juan Trejo), Juan Trejo (? Jose Montez), Josh Miller (CK rebound), Mario Villalobos (Allan Concalves)
Goaltending - Edwin Casteneda (1H, 1 GA); Lucas Derflinger (2H).

Spartans : Goals (Assists) - None. Goaltending - Alex Santos (90 min, 10-15 saves).

#19 Matt Hopkins (to the left of frame) also plays Baseball for the Spartans.
