Isaac Acosta and Emily Donahue

NSBCART

On Monday, the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table held its weekly convocation at Giovanni's Pizza in Orcutt. Although some institutions took the holiday off, the Round Table did not. There was a somewhat smaller crowd than normal, however.

Last Wednesday, the Los Padres League held its Mid-Season Cross Country Duals Meet at Cabrillo HS, and that competition had a significant effect on Monday's festivities.

Starting Cornerback,#2 Tailback, Punt and Kickoff Returner, Punter.
"He said he would give me some of his hair," the bald Barrett quiped, before tossing some stats on the pile. “He averages 9.5 yards per carry, has run for over 500 yards this year, and at defensive corner had 5 solo tackles and a Sack against Pioneer Valley.”

Kameron Davis (Sr), QB [44'3" Triple Jumper]
Played only the 1st half, he was 4-4 passing for 182 yards with 3 TDs.
"An outstanding young man, who sat last year behind Torey Sims, and when he got in - he did real well. He took that job over in spring and has been tremendous at quarterback for us.”

Orcutt Academy
Athletic Director: Chad McKenzie

Girls Tennis - Coach Art Lopez
"I can't tell a lie. It's been a very successful season this year, and we're really, really happy." The Spartans play Santa Maria and Nipomo this week followed by the "heart of the schedule", Cabrillo and Santa Ynez, next week.

Megan Vise (So) Singles
Megan has consistently beaten other teams top players all season, including a memorable victory over 2-time LPL Singles Champ Mary Kovalaski of Santa Ynez.

"Megan has really helped balance out our team. We've always been fairly decent at doubles and with her and Amanda (Hsuing) leading the way in singles it's been a really big plus."

Jana Andrade, (Sr)#1 Doubles Team
"Last year she played singles. We moved her to doubles this year and it's the best thing we ever did. She is a monster at the net, and we're really proud of her."

Tenley Childs (Sr), 3 year player, #1 Doubles
"Has developed into a really outstanding doubles player. She's not afraid to come to the net. I really proud of her."

Coach Lopez also paid tribute to Tenley's mom, who is "basically my assistant coach and a big asset to our team."

Football - Coach Doug May.

McKenzie got an assist from Coach May (whose daughter, Righetti tennis player Kaitlin, was also being honored) as they tag-teamed the football portion.

Orcutt gained a measure of revenge against the Owls for a close loss last year with a 42-20 Condor League victory for Homecoming. A re-shuffled line-up due to injury, led them to focus on the running game. The 4-3 Spartans play at Cate on Saturday.

McKenzie introduced the team's three starting offensive linemen, who helped OA rush for over 300 yards against Laguna Blanca.

Justin Zepeda (Sr)
Kevin Lopez (Jr)
Alex Andrade (Jr)
"Alex also had 21 tackles on defense. He's leading the team in tackles."

May added, “That's the heart and soul of the team. Where they go, we go. Those guys perform on Fridays.”

Righetti
Athletic Director: Kevin Barbaric

Girls Tennis - Coach Jen Haskell
"It's my first year, I'm really having a good time, and the girls are wonderful, so much fun, and working so hard," Haskell said as she introduced herself.

"Righetti tennis is doing well. We have a match at Mission Prep tomorrow (Tuesday), and if we win it we'll probably be in CIF - So we're excited."

Kaitlin May (So)
“She is fast out there, she gives 100 percent every game.”

Marta Malenchini (12), Exchange Student
“She is an exchange student from Italy, and I'm blessed to have her. She is #1 singles and she is just a 'beast'," said a giggling Haskell.

Football  - Coach Ed Herrmann

Coach H performed a bit of 'Call and Response' with emcee Charles Sommer:
Sommers -"First win of the season."  Hermann - "Say it again."
Sommers - "In the win column." Hermann - "Say it again."

“We came off our bye week, got some things settled down a bit, got healed up, and had a nice win the other night against San Luis Obispo. It was Homecoming, so we got the weekend off to a nice start."

The Warriors now head into "the meat of our league schedule - Atascadero for their Homecoming, and every team we play now is coming off their Bye week. A little uphill, but we're up for the challenge, and I couldn't be more proud of the team for staying the course."

Joey Garcia (Sr), DB/WR
Had a TD reception for the Warriors first score of the game. "One of our leading tacklers, great cornerback for us, had some take-aways and great tackles. Joey Garcia did a great job the other night."

Derek Imel (Jr) RB/LB
"Had 78 yards on the ground, so helped balance our attack a little bit. Also had an interception earlier in the year and numerous tackles the other night."

Boys water Polo - Team Member Noah (Wesylyhan)

"Last year we came off a (2nd straight) Division 4 Championship Title, and we got moved up to Division 1. It's a tough season this year, but we are powering through it.”

"We just got off a good week of training, and are playing two Division 1 teams this weekend, and St. Joseph tomorrow for league."

Noah (Wesylyhan) spoke for the team
Layne Porter (So)
Daxton Miller (Jr) [Also Basketball]

St. Joseph

Boys Water Polo - Team Member Ethan Ellickson

At the beginning of our season, we had a really rough start against Cabrillo. But we finally started working together. Our team got a lot better. We got a lot more experienced in the pool, and we were able to beat Pioneer Valley, which was a big win for us. We've also had really good games at tournaments and other one-on-one matches.”

Ethan also mentioned apair of teammates - "Our set player, James Sistal, has had a really good season. He stepped up from being a normal player and moved to playing set for us, which has been a big help.Ryan Galanski has been a huge help for us. Sprinting and one-on-one encounters."

This week St Joseph plays at Righetti (Tuesday) at home versus Atascadero (Thursday) and then at the Santa Maria Tournament Friday & Saturday.

Ethan Ellickson (Sr) 4th year varsity

Santa Maria

Boys Water Polo
Coach Ellington started with "a shout-out to our water polo team. They're ranked 2nd in their division (D7) and have a big tournament this weekend."

Football - Coach Dan Ellington
"I haven't been here for a couple weeks, so I wanted to congratulate a couple teams. I want to congratulate Pioneer Valley for their win against us, it was a great night of football - excitement, intensity, and the environment was what high school football is about. It was a tough game."

"And then also in Santa Ynez, they have a very good football team. They have a kid named McCoy, and this Pendergast kid that did a number to us. That's a good football team."

"This week we went up to Mission Prep. Ya know they have 22 guys on their roster, so we're thinking - 'OK, we're going to go fast and we're going to wear them out.', but that didn't happen. They might only have 22 guys, but they have some quality players. Their quarterback with a couple receivers they've got up there, they can play football."

It was 21-20, we were up with about 5 minutes left, they drove down, made a big pass play in the corner of the endzone. The guy just got his foot in. We got the ball back and drove down inside the 15, but couldn't put it in. So, another one of those tough losses. We've had 4 of them this year."

“We could easily be 7-0 or we could be 1-6 – that’s just competitive football. That was our goal going in - being competitive and having a chance to win it in the 4th quarter. So we're doing what we came out to do. We're just gonna keep working." The Saints host Templeton for Homecoming on Friday.

"Hopefully, we can win out and make it interesting."

Gabriel Bravo () DE/OG
“He plays both ways, he's basically on most of the special teams, so he doesn't come off the field.. It’s a pain to wash his jersey every Saturday morning because it’s usually the most dirtiest one. What's most awesome about Gabe is that he is a 4.0 student.”

Frank Lopez (Jr), MLB [Also Wrestling]

Jesus Joaquin (So), OT
Jesus "started for the first time, at Offensive Tackle, this week. He's been working real hard. We brought him up from the JV team, he did a great job, earned that starting position, beat out a senior, and played really well."

Valley Christian
Athletic Director: Pete Fortier

Football
The Lions played their first day game game in quite a while. They won 66-26 at Shandon Saturday afternoon, but there was a problem. “It was 120 on the field - the guys were definitely feeling it,” Fortier related,  “Fortunately, we had 18 players to their 12, so that helped a little bit.”

Actually, there was another problem as well, "They ran 3 kickoffs back for touchdowns and then scored late. Our defense played well and they couldn't stop the offense.

VCA (1-1 Coast Valley League) will take on Coast Union in a "must-win" game at Cambria Friday night.

Matt Bullock QB
"Four kids played almost the whole game, even in that heat, didn't come off the field. I tried to get them off on special teams, and that kind of backfired a little bit."

Bulloch was one of them - "He rushed for two touchdowns, threw for a touchdown, rushed for two 2-point extra points and threw for another one. He had a great game, both offense and defense, and I'm glad the heat didn't bother him because we needed him out there the whole time."

Ethan McCoy (So), RB
"Our fullback went down and I wasn't sure who to use. So I put in this kid named Ethan McCoy. I was just gonna put him in there and let him block for the tailback all day. And then I thought - 'Ah, give him a chance.' The first time he touched the ball - touchdown. Second time - touchdown. Third time - no, no touchdown. But two TDs, two touches, I’d say that was pretty good."

Fortier added a personal note - “I didn't want to bring Ethan, even though he had two touchdowns, because he makes me feel old. I coached his dad. He was a good player for us, played offense and defense.

Santa Ynez

Cross Country - Coach David Jackson
"It's been a while since I got a chance to be here last, I always like coming on an off cross country week cause I get to hear how much everyone else is talking about Santa Ynez. As I got to the vans today, I kind of thought that I'd accompany our water polo team, our football team, our tennis team, and everybody was busy. So they said 'Jackson, you go ahead and take them'."

Emily Donahue (Jr) #1 Runner
“We happen to have one of the most exceptional young ladies through our program's history, running cross country for us this year. As a sophomore last year, Emily was the first non-qualifier (just out of qualifying) to CIF in cross country. I think it got under her skin a little bit. She came back in the track season, won CIF in the 3200 (2 mile). And now in her junior year, I think she has reclaimed, I think, the position that she thought she would be in, which is - just up front running a race."

"This last Wednesday we had a chance to feature her in the Girls Varsity race, and right away she and the girl from Morro Bay were shoulder-to-shoulder like they have been over the last couple weeks - the race down at Bell-Jeff. This is all about improvement, running is all about the individual effort,... so you find yourself always comparing yourself against your last best, Emily took 40 seconds off her previous best on the Cabrillo course from the year before. It suggests another step in the long line on the way back to CIF."

Pioneer Valley
Athletic Director: Greg Lanthier

“Fall has been a big struggle for us this year. Traditionally we've had a difficult time competing in the PAC-8 in Girls Tennis and Boys Water Polo and last year our girls tennis team graduated 14 kids. So when we are trying to rebuild in the PAC-8 it makes things even more difficult. Neither our Girls Tennis Team nor our Boys Water Polo Team have won a PAC-8 match, but we still appreciate the effort of our kids going out every day."

Girls Tennis
They play SLO Tuesday and AG Thursday.

Czarlyn Camba (Jr), Doubles
Arianna Scannelli (Jr), Doubles

Boys Water Polo
They play AG on Tuesday.

Ivan Alvarado (Jr)

Football
Is 3-3, after the loss to Lompoc. They have St. Joseph on Friday.
