LPL Individual Tournament
Orcutt Academy hosts
Perennial power Santa Ynez proved it still has some firepower despite finishing third in the LPL this year - it captured all three tournament champion positions.
Singles
Two-time champion and #2 Seed, Santa Ynez senior Mary Kavaloski took the title by defeating Templeton's Mili Proft.
Although under the weather, and "under the weather" Kavaloski battled through the elements and her physical state to capture her 3rd LPL crown in 4 years. She did not compete in the tournament during her sophomore season due to injuries.
Doubles
Top seeds Brie Parker & Julia Deming of Santa Ynez, third last season, got a measure of revenge for the team by beating Sarah Lopez & Keona Pablo of LPL Team Champions Orcutt Academy.
It will be the first sectional individual tourney for both pairs. In fact, Lopez, a senior, and Pablo, a junior, in their first season as a tandem, are the first Orcutt Academy girls tennis players to ever qualify for the sectional individual tourney. The 2016 girls tennis team is also the first from Orcutt to win a league title.
Local
The highlight by local players was the third place doubles contest which featured two pairs from Cabrillo HS. In an 8-8 (10-8) tiebreaker, #4 seeds Lilly Wood & Krista Eisen (Cab) pulled off a mild upset of #3 seeds Jordan Spice & Karly Kovach (Cab). Although Spice and Kovach usually played in the No. 3 doubles spot for the Conquistadores, they were their most consistently productive doubles team. The Lompoc duo of Leanna Alcantana & Jesse Elenes were the only Braves to advance past the first round.
Team
The Team Playoffs begin Tuesday and Wednesday (1-2 November) with automatic qualifiers Orcutt Academy, Cabrillo, Santa Ynez and Templeton, in action. For more information on those playoff - click HERE.
