Roundtable Monday (24 Oct 2016)

Monday, 24 October 2016
Grayden Adams, Zeke Chavez

Two of the Braves unsung heroes this season have been FB Zeke Chavez, and TE Grayden Adams. Usually assigned to blocking duty, they do occasionally get to handle the rock and make the most of their opportunities. Last Friday, each turned short check-down passes into long (40+ yard) TD receptions. In addition, of course, to repeatedly blasting running lanes through the Pirate 'D'.

NSBCART

On Monday, the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table held its weekly convocation at Giavanni's Pizza and Pasta in Orcutt. Although some institutions took the day off, there was a full house.

Isiah Garcia (Jr),
Santa Maria, Football [5-6, 155]

Rushed for 188 yards and scored 3 TDs (2 Rushing, 1 receiving) in the Saints 35-14 victory at Morro Bay. The win moved Santa Maria to 5-4 (2-1 Northern League) and sets up a title tussle with Nipomo in two weeks.

Righetti, Girls Golf

Shot a 77 at the PAC-8 League Finals Tournament to take Medalist Honors and capture the cumulative PAC-8 Individual Scoring Championship for the 3rd consecutive season.

(See HERE) Her scoring round at the Vinyard Course, River Ridge Golf Club was good enough to qualify for the CIF-SS Individual Championship Final.

Lompoc
Former Athletic Director: Dick Barrett

Cross Country
"It's been fun to follow what's been going on in Cross Country, and we're excited to host the County Meet. Which is going to be Thursday at River Park. We hope to see everybody out there - it should be a lot of fun. Our teams have done well as have some individuals"

Isaac Acosta, Helen Flores
Helen Flores (Jr)
Multi-Sport Athlete (XC, Wrestling, Track). "She's everywhere." The Top Braves Finisher (22:18) at Mt SAC [35th of 111 in Race 31 - Girl's Varsity CIF Div 4 - 3 Miles]. Lompoc finished 12th out of 24 teams.

Isaac Acosta (Sr),
Boys #1 Runner
"One of the top runners in the area. He is being looked at, and getting prepared to go run in college, too."

Was 25th at the 2015 State XC Meet. Won the Lompoc Invitational, the LPL Mid-season Duals, etc. this season. At Mt Sac, finished 5th of 100 harriers in Race 32 (Boy's Varsity CIF Div 4 - 3 Miles) in a time of 16:32.  Lompoc was 5th of 16 teams in that race.

Football
"We were undefeated, and so was Santa Ynez. I thought we did a great job, came out and played hard, and ended up winning 48-3. Being able to keep Santa Ynez from scoring a touchdown was a huge thing because that Quarterback, the way he runs around - you can't simulate that in practice."

"They're still a very good team and Josh (Coach McClurg) has done a great job there. The last two years he's come 7-0 to start the season, and that's pretty tough to do."

"It's going to be tough again this week because we have to go play at St. Joe, those big guys there (indicated StJ table) and CJ Cole and all those good athletes. Should be quite a game."

Zeke Chavez, Grayden Adams
"I brought two gentlemen."
Grayden Adams (Sr), 6-1, 185

"Grayden is a TE/LB/Special teams kind of guy. He has been in our program for 3 years. He had a 50 yard TD reception against Santa Ynez and he has done a great job for us."

Zeke Chavez (Sr),
FB/LB, 5-6, 150
"He's not the tallest guy out there, but he probably has the biggest heart. He's also our starting catcher in baseball - so you know he likes to mix it up a little bit. He scored on a real nice pass play, a 44-yard touchdown, the other night. Everybody was really excited to see that."

Barrett concluded with his usual salutation - "I hope everybody has good luck, and stay healthy!"

Cabrillo
Athletic Director: Daniel Troup

Girls Tennis
Hannah Bonham, Taylor Christen
"Our Girls Tennis team is currently 11-2 in league. We lost a tough match last Thursday to Orcutt Academy. That was for the League Championship, however there is still one more match to play, so we still have to take care of business."

"We are sitting in second place with Templeton still to go tomorrow. We are traveling up there, so we are going to get started a little bit earlier due to the light issue we'restarting to run into. It's a good trip up there."

"The ladies I brought today are both seniors. The first one is a singles player (#3), Taylor Christen. And the other young lady plays doubles and her name is  Hannah Bonham."

"I mentioned we have Templeton tomorrow, and then we're hoping to have the League Final Tournament Thursday and Friday, but we'll have to wait and see -we've got some weather forecast, and so we're kinda playing that one by ear."

Cross Country
Fernandez, Swain, Espinosa
Emily Swain (Fr), #4 Varsity Runner
Was 13th of 72 competitors in a frosh race at Mt SAC.

Daniel Fernandez (Sr),
Team Captain, 4th yr in Program
Was 19th of 100 runners for the Cabrillo Varsity at Mt.SAC.

Osvaldo 'Ozzie' Espinoza (Fr)
Won a Frosh 2 mile race (167 runners) in 10:19 to lead Cabrillo to a 1st place finish.

Football
Fernandez, Tourtellotte
"We played probably one of our best games Friday against Pioneer Valley. We came out, right off the get-go, playing hard, caught a few breaks early from Pioneer Valley - they played hard the entire game as well. That moves us to 4-5. We are on a Bye this week - so it gives us a chance to rest up, heal up, game plan, and we'll need every single day because in two weeks we have Lompoc. They are always a big handfull, but we look forward to the challenge."

Jake Tourtellotte (Sr), Offensive Guard
Jake was All-LPL in 2015 as a Center and has moved to Guard this year.

Gerardo Fernandez (So), Center
"The young man who slid into Jake's spot, and is doing fantastic job. He has done it all season."

Valley Christian
Athletic Director: Pete Fortier

Football
[Assistant Coach: Randy Stanford]
Sanders,Bullock,J. Bouzart,C. Bouzart
"We had the privilege of hosting Cuyama, they're seeded #1 in our league and 4th overall. They are a really good team. We went down and scored on them right away, but then they came right back and scored -again and again. The final score was 66 to 38."

Pete got a bit emotional and a tad maudlin as he discussed the end of the season and the final game for several of his players.

"I brought our 4 seniors."
Jacob Bouzard  (Sr) Lineman/FB, Matt Bullock (Sr) QB/DB, Chris Bouzard (Sr) LinemanTobin Sanders (Sr) DE

"That was our last game. We get the privilege of getting a Bye week the last week of football, so we are done. We might try to pick up a JV game."

"For 4 years, Jacob has been saying 'I can play fullback' and I gave him his first carry. It was on a two point conversion, they got out of his way and he said 'I told you, coach'. He did a great job, and he's done a great job for us all four years."

"Matt's first pass this week, to the TE, was just incredible. He's done a great job for us. He plays defense, as well."

"Chris, Brother of Jacob, though they look nothing alike. I had the privilege of teaching both these kids in pre-school ... two years ago. Yeah, last week I brought a player who's dad I coached, and now I bring kids that I taught in pre-school ... They are smarter than they were back then."

"Tobin (a Luncheon returnee) plays Defensive End for us. We're gonna miss these guys, and they ARE all going to graduate. That's it for us this year and good luck with the rest of the season."

St. Joseph
[AD Staff Assistant: Debbie Wegemer]

Cross Country
Edens, Dillard, Wheeler, Sanchez
Clare Wheeler [Speaker] (Jr)
"We've been having a really fun season so far. Last Friday, we went to Mt. SAC. Our boys got 4th out of 16, and the Varsity girls got 6th. This coming Thursday, we're going to Lompoc, to the Riverside, it's a really flat course so we hope to do well."

Kaylee Dillard (So)
Bryce Edens (Jr)
Evan Sanchez (Jr)

Cross Country
"Shorty" Garcia,Tyler,Ventura,Nogales
Doris Nogales (Fr)

"She is consistently third on our team and is the hardest worker of our freshman class. She's done really well in all of her freshman and varsity races."

Javier Ventura
David Tyler
Alexis Garcia [Won the Drawing]

"The boys have had a really good season, they are 3rd in league and headed for a playoff spot. We have the county meet on Thursday, and then next week we have our league meet on Wednesday - both at the same location, River Park in Lompoc."

Football
Head Coach:  Dan Ellington
Pacheco, Ruiz, Truhitte, Garcia
"We had a game last Friday against Morro Bay. Those that go up there may know that it's not the most pleasant place to play, it's damp and the grass is wet. It's just uncomfortable."

"But we came out and played well. Through about 3 quarters, I thought it was one of the best games we've played all year. Going into the 4th, we were up 28-0. We ended up winning 35-14, so we've won the last two."

"We've got a bye week, this week, and no matter what happens, in two weeks versus Nipomo we'll have a chance for a possible piece of that league title. We're looking forward to that - we've got two weeks to prepare. We'll see what happens."

"I brought 4 players. They are all doing an outstanding job, and are a big reason why we are doing so well this year."

Jesus Pacheco (Sr, 5-8, 150) [Captain] MLB/RB
"He's a great leader for our team."

Blake Truhitte (Jr, 5-6, 130) QB/DB
"He's having a great year. He's our quarterback. Breaking some school records - at least the ones that are on Maxpreps."

Isiah Garcia (Jr, 5-6,155) [Captain] RB/SS
"Isiah had a real big game" - 3 touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving) and 188 yards on the ground. [See MAOTW above]

Robert Ruiz (Jr, 5-7,145) [Captain] RB/OLB
"Bobby is also part of that running game tandem. Both those guys get a lot of chances to run the ball. He also plays outside backer."

Righetti

Cross Country
Head Coach: Louis Quintana
Minero, Pulido, Murrillo, Flores
"We competed at Mt Sac over the weekend, like everybody else. And the girls really impressed me. We have 3 freshmen girls that did a really outstanding job for us. At the freshman level our team came in 5th out of 16."

Christiana Flores (Fr) is one of the leaders of that group.

"Our gentlemen, I knew they were going to do Top 5, but I didn't know they'd be that close - 2nd place. We figured they'd run pretty fast right now, but we're kind of sitting back on it right now 'cause we've got a big meet this weekend up at Lompoc. And we love that course there - to run there. It's a good workout for them."

Coach Q credited the trio he brought, Mariano Murrillo (So), Christian Pulido (Sr), and Johnathan Minero (Jr), with much of the team's success not just because of their running, but due to their leadership and ability to keep the team focused. The Pac-8 League finals are in two weeks.

Football

Head Coach: Ed Herrmann
Boiuin, Marroquin, Urbano
"We had a pretty good battle up at Arroyo Grande the other night. People say it's a tough place to play, but it's not the place so much - it's the people, that make it pretty tough. They are a solid team any way you look at 'em - offensively, defensively, special teams, they're a real handful."

"I was proud of our guys. We battled pretty well, we scored, we answered a few things back and forth, we converted on a couple trick plays that we had, and just kinda kept swinging at it a little bit. So i'm proud of the way we played."

"This time of year, you're kinda combing your roster all the time. You've got some injuries. You've got some folks that are dinged up a little bit, and maybe can't go full speed, or whatever. We have some guys who have been there from day 1, they work really hard, so you start plugging some guys in."

Henry Marroquin (Sr) WR/CB
"Henry is a wide receiver and started at corner the other night and got an interception, which is nice."

Joseph Boiuin (Sr)

"We got a couple interceptions, the other one came from Joseph Boiuin. So two picks off Arroyo Grande. Joe also ran the ball for us a few times, as well."

Isaiah Urbano"He's our punter and he's had a lot of reps, so I figured we ought to feed him a little bit. He has about a 40 yard average, with a very small return. He;s really good with his directional punt. So we are able to put it where we need to put it."

The Warrior conclude Pac-8 play Friday with Senior Night versus Paso Robles.

Pioneer Valley
Football Assistant Coach: Chris Etheridge

Cross Country
John Gutierrez
"He was our Top finisher at the Mt SAC Invitational. I believe it was ... 16th? Hard-working kid, and that team is a hard-working group."

Football

"Tough week for us. We went down to Lompoc and played Cabrillo High, and that's a team that's getting better every week. So hats off to them."

" I brought four players. Two seniors - Alex Martinez (Sr) & Michael Martinez (Sr), and two juniors Ivan Zapeda (Jr)
and Kenneth Hooberry (Jr)."

"We finish up our league play this week with Santa Ynez, which is another tough team. And then finish next week with Righetti at home on our Senior Night."Hancock

Football
Offensive Co-ordinator: Seth Damron

Nick Kimball (So, 5-10, 185) WR/K [Nipomo HS]
"Nick is one of our leading receivers this year. He came back to us after leaving to go on a scholarship to a Division II school, and we're really fortunate to have him back."

"This time of year in football, you have some people banged up, so we actually used Nick at running back this week, as well. He ended up being our Offensive Player of the Game. Had over 60 yards rushing, over 100 yards total offense, scored a touchdown for us. He's done a good job blocking, catching the ball, whatever we ask him to do - and obviously running the ball this week."

"We had another tough loss against LA Valley, who's loaded this year. They're 7-0. We're disappointed with that. This week, we get to come back home and play LA Pierce at 2 o'clock. We'd really like to have you guys out there. We'd love the support."
Charles Sommer reminded everyone that HS athletes can attend AHC sporting events for free.
Cross Country
Head Coach: Alyssa Hilton
Praska, Avila, Uvalle
"We're coming off of two races. We had Cuesta two weeks ago, and last week we were at the Western State Conference Championship at Oxnard. Our team has really been working hard and last Friday all of our girls stayed consistent. We had a lot of girls improve on their times."

Coach Hilton introduced 3 of her runners - Maria Uvalle (So) [OA],
Vanessa Avila (Fr) [Nipomo], and
Michaella Praska (Fr) [San Diego], specifically noting that Avila had improved "50 seconds on her time from Cuesta to Oxnard." She further noted - "All three of these girls have been very consistent for us all season. And all 10 of our girls have worked hard - our first season back after 3 years, and it's been good. We;ve got a good group of girls."

Both the team and Ms Avila are awaiting word on their possible qualification to the SoCal Finals.
