The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table presented Athlete of the Week Awards to Amanda Hsiung and Gabe Prendergast at a luncheon on Monday.

Athletes Of The Week 

Female Athlete of the Week 


Amanda Hsiung (12), Orcutt Academy,Tennis 

In the course of two matches last week, Amanda Hsiung swept six perfect sets. Her efforts were crucial to victories over Cabrillo (Tuesday) and Morro Bay (Thursday) which catapulted the Spartans (7-0) into sole possession of first place in Los Padres League after the first series of league matches. 

Amanda's third set win on Tuesday, put the Spartans ahead 9-4, and mathematically clinched the match for Orcutt. Her dominance set the tone for the 10-8 first-place showdown victory against the Conqs,  and continued on against the Pirates.


Male Athlete of the Week

Gabe Prendergast (11), Santa Ynez, Football 

Gabe was outstanding Friday night on both sides of the ball for the Pirates. The 42-28 victory at Santa Maria improved their record to 5-0.

Offensively, he reeled in 14 receptions for 250 yards and 2 TDs, plus 2 carries for 60 yards and a TD. 

On Defense he had 8 tackles, including a Sack and a two-yard Tackle For Loss, and a pass breakup. The 4th period TFL came on the fourth down of a goal line stand at the Pirate 2 yard line with the score tied at 28.

Major topics included:
1) the LPL Mid-Season Duals to be held Wednesday at Cabrillo HS, the Duals will encompass teams from Lompoc, Cabrillo, Santa Ynez, Orcutt Academy,and Santa Maria plus Nipomo, Morro Bay, and Templeton from SLO County.  

The Pac-8 Midseason is next week. 

2) The Results from the Brug Invitational last Saturday.

3) The slate of football games from both the last weekend and next week.

Hellen Flores (11)
Runner #2 in her 2nd year on the squad. A multi-sport athlete, she "does both track and swimming on the same day". This winter, "She's even going to try wrestling". Set a 20:55 personal best at the Seaside Invitational. 






Alexis Ramirez (11) 
Runner #2. 2nd place (16:36) in his race at the Seaside Invitational.










Football 

Lompoc have outscored their last four opponents 222-0, including 58-0 over Templeton on Friday.

The undefeated Braves (6-0), "are on a collision course with Santa Ynez (5-0),” said Barrett. The teams meet in two weeks, but first Lompoc faces Pioneer Valley.

"Our guys are playing hard right now, it's one thing if you're good and you win, but when you can come out and play hard every week, it makes a big difference." 

D’Artagnan Canley  (12) [CB/RB] "The Hard Luck Kid"


Dart tore his ACL two weeks ago at Righetti and is out for rest of the season. He was selected as a captain for the Templeton game and was a member of the Homecoming Court. "We’re waiting for the swelling to go down before he has surgery. He also does track and plays basketball-as soon as that thing heals."

Isaac Black (12)  [DL/OL]


Isaac has been a major contributor for the Braves the last 2 years. "He is the heart and soul of our defense. He had six tackles, 3 for loss, and 2 sacks." 

"Last year he was All League, All-Area, and Defensive Lineman of the Year. So he is a force to be reckoned with."








Cabrillo Conquistadors

Olivia Brown (12) 
“Olivia is the leader of our girls team. She has been running in the program for 4 years." 

Cabrillo won the Small Schools Varsity race at the Brug Invitational"They have been working hard over the years and been getting better and better. They had a real good season last year and are looking good this year."




Martin Borrayo  (12) 
4th year. "I also brought a leader from the boys side, and that's Marty Borrayo. Marty is the leader of the pack.”








Football 

“Our football team had a big win up at Morro Bay on Friday. We came out of the gates well, the boys played very spirited and very focused. A fantastic job.” said Troup. The Pirates had been undefeated. 



De’Andre Saucedo  (12) 
Captain. 3rd year. Had 2 TD vs Morro Bay.

"His number is 42, you'll hear it called a lot; you'll see it on the field a lot, De’Andre
doesn't come out very often. He is a fantastic linebacker, tight end and now they're putting him in at running back a little bit.” 

Tyler Pickles  (12) 

“He anchors the left side of our line and is one of our captains. He’s doing an excellent job.He gets in a little bit on defense as well."

Cabrillo starts LPL play at St. Joseph Friday night.

"The girls are breaking school records left and right. It’s the best girls team we’ve ever had.”

5th in a Division race at the Styles Invitational in LA.

Mackenzie Webb (10) 
2nd in a Division race at the Styles Invitational in LA.

The Spartan boys traveled to the Desert Twilight meet in Arizona, where they finished fifth out of 60 teams.

Michael Lopez (11) 
4th runner. Finished 66th of 405 runners in the Small School Boys Varsity race.

"Mike is known for Track and Field, he is our top sprinter. He wanted to try out cross country this year. He is doing really, really well, he has made a lot od improvements." 

Lorenzo Papworth (11)
Was the #5 runner last season, and has moved up to #2 this year. Finished 42nd of 405 runners in the Small School Boys Varsity race.

Football 

“We had a really tough game Saturday against Desert Christian". The 48-20 loss to the team from Bermuda Dunes dropped the Spartans to 3-3. "We had some really good offense but we had some key injuries to our quarterback, running back and a wide receiver and we just couldn’t quite get over the hump.”

Jared Sutton (11) [RB]
“Jared has been battling multiple injuries but has been able to play through it,   he had 111 yards rushing, and caught a 35-yard touchdown reception."

Dominic Nattell (10) [FB/LB]
“Dominic did a great job. He gained 50 yards rushing and made tons of tackles from his linebacker position on defense”



They play Laguna Blanca (SB) on Friday at SMHS.

"He just turned 15", "had 3 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.”

"These four guys have a combined (average) GPA of 3.9. The four have all medaled in all of their races this year. And Dennis even got to win a race.”

Wallace speaking of the Saints loss to the Pirates last week, that they led at the half. "It was hard fought, and was tied 28-28 with about 4 minutes to go."

“Friday’s game was very intense, the most intense all year, a tough battle against a very good football team. Even though we lost, it's still good that they gave us a good look to get us ready for league.”

Burress, Wheeler, Dominguez, Sanchez 
Both cross country teams finished 2nd of 18 teams in their division at the Bell-Jeff Invitational. The Boys were 2nd in the Small Schools Division at the Brug Invitational, and the Girls were 3rd.

The Boys team improved in the CIF-SS D5 rankings from 10th to 7th.

Joseph Domingues (10) 
1st of 51 at the Brug. His time of 17:03 was a PR by about 2 minutes.


Evan Sanchez (11)

5th Runner. 3rd year on Team. 24th of 51 at the Brug.

The Girls side only has 9 runners this year, with no seniors.

Corby Burress (10) 
14th of 46 at the Brug. 1st season running cross country. 
"She is dividing her time between 3 sports right now. She plays on her club soccer team, and she also just joined our JV Football team as the placekicker-because none of our JV football players could get it through the uprights. She also carries about a 4-0 GPA."

Clare Wheeler (11) 
#1 Runner. 11th of 46 at the Brug.

"The heart and soul of the girl's team. She always leads with a smile on her face. I don't know how you do that running cross country, but she does it"

The Knights has a 41-0 win over San Luis Obispo.


C. J.  Cole (12)
“CJ is having an incredible season, I don't know that he ever comes off the field. He played quarterback, 
cornerback, wide receiver, running back, and he did a couple other things for us."

"He had a really good game, a couple TD runs - one of 50 yards, several catches.”

We actually played them as well as we've ever played them."

"And 2 freshmen - Emma came in second and Lindsey came in fifth. Really proud of that - as a freshmen, varsity race, that's very, very impressive  So we really look forward to what they'll do in the future."

“We’ve brought the program back after three years of not having one.”

Most of the dozen or so women on the team are freshmen, these 3 ladies are all sophomores. 

The school is also hopeful about bringing back the Men's program next year.

After opening the season at the Ventura Invitational ,“The past two races we’ve been running really well,” said Hilton. Those would be the Bakersfield College Invitational and the WSC Preview - both at Hart Park in Bakersfield.

Anthony Miller ( Florida )

Had several of the nine sacks the Bulldogs had against San Bernardino.
“In my opinion, he’s our best defensive lineman. He actually plays the interior defensive line, and he's not the biggest guy, but he is very, very active.” 

Hancock won a 16-6 defensive struggle at San Bernadino Saturday, has a bye this week, then hosts their biggest rival - Santa Barbara City College on Saturday, Oct. 15th, 2016.
