The Big Game 2007

Let’s face it. Unless the Patriots announce tomorrow they are relocating to Huyck Stadium, football will go into the history books as a disappointment this season in the Valley of the Flowers.

And yet, a victory in The Big Game can soothe at least a degree of the pain. “At least we beat those guys from ________.”

There is not much more to say. Lompoc comes in 3-6, Cabrillo 2-7. Both are out of the playoffs for the second straight year after going deep into CIF in 2005.

The wise guys in the newspaper ALL pick Lompoc to win. The Braves won last year 32-13 when the contest was also a Turn-In-the-Gear Bowl. When it last meant something, in 2005, Cabrillo won 28-18.

AL HUNT reports in the Santa Barbara News-Suppress that both coaches will opt to go into overtime should regulation end in a tie. ROBIN LUKEN, Hunt says, is 12-4 in the Big Game, DON CROSS is 1-3.

Lompoc leads the series 29-13

And yet, there will be some interesting match-ups.

Can BENNIE GARRETT maintain his 100-yard per game average one more week for Cabrillo? He ranks #3 in the county in rushing with 933 yards. He’ll be on his own. GREG WATSON is reportedly out with a concussion. Cabrillo will suit up fewer than 30 players.

Will some semblance of size return to the Lompoc line? Will ANDREW VAN DYKE and TOM McCAFFREY come back from their injuries for one last game? Will it make a difference?

And yet, there are some guys who have not packed it in. We pick two here.

One is SETH BROADHEAD (#40 above) A sure tackler at defensive end for much of the season, he went over to offense to play tackle at oh, 195 pounds, when the Braves needed him. He was outweighed by roughly 80 pounds. Mr. En Fuego likes utility guys.

The other is PAT COOK (#33) Here’s a guy whose name appears on all the lists the Conquistadores post. As a defensive lineman/linebacker he has posted 41 tackles and three sacks. He has kicked eight extra points when he was needed there. He has even carried the pigskin threee times. Did we say Mr. En Fuego likes utility guys?

Go Conqs, Go Braves. Or should it be Go Braves, Go Conqs?
The game will be broadcast by Press Box Productions on Comcast Channel 23.
