LPL Girls Volleyball Previews

LPL Girls Volleyball

Let's see Santa Ynez was 27-6-3 [12-0 LPL (36-1 in sets)], advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs (the other LPL teams all lost their first match), placed 6 players and Coach Chip Fenenga on the all-LPL team. Four of those players and, of course, Coach Fenenga return including the LPL Co-MVP's to join the call-ups from a tremendous JV squad. Ok, got that sorted, I predict Santa Ynez will finish in the LPL top 3. Seriously, with the possible exception of St. Joseph 14-13-1 [9-3 LPL], it appears that no-one will bump the Pirates off their pedestal. The rest of the league were some 19- 72 -1 against all commers last year, with only Morro Bay [9-11 (8-3 LPL)] even close to .500.

Lompoc
The Braves have slowly been rebuilding the program under Don Sevilla, and look to have their best team in quite a while. The still young team is led by a trio of returning seniors - setter Stephanie Olsen, steady outside Jackie Townsend, and the Braves big gun 'Slammin' Cameron Lizzarraga. Other likely starters are Erica Slikker, Brandy Muchado, and Susan Hang. Lompoc has been somewhat slowed in practice by injuries, but looks to be much improved this year.

Roster:

Cabrillo

The Conqs also had a long year last season, and loose All-LPL hitters Brittany Skinner (2nd Tm 5-7), and Shabraya Hayes (HM 5-9), but look to rebuild around 1st Team middle blocker Jessica Farley (5-11) and an infusion of players from the water polo & track teams.
Roster:

Santa Ynez
See Above. The Pirates did graduate 7 of their 15 player varsity unit, but they don't rebuild or reload at SY - they just clip another section to the machine gun ammo belt. All-LPL team members were Co-MVP's Kelsey Soos (5-10 Jr) & Aly Squires (6-0 So), 1st Team seniors hitters Julia Mathews (5-9) and Allison Ibsen (5-11), 2nd team junior hitter Caitlyn Wright(5-8), and Hon. Mntn. junior outside hitter Courtney Martin (5-6).

St Joseph

The Knights loose two 1st teamers- setter Staci Mccracken (5-8) and Libero Alex Bradfield (5-7) as well as BRS Samantha Hughes who was Honorable Mention, but return two 2nd teamers-monster MB Analise Reizebos (6-0) and OP Dayna Drewniak (5-9) and a bunch of quality varsity & JV players.

Varsity: Baldwin, Haley 10; Beebe, Alyson 9; Cabalka, Annalisa 10; Drewniak, Dayna 12; Dudley, Alexis 12; Foreman, BriAnna 12; Kolbo, Natasha 11; Mitchell, Lizzy 12; Riezebos, Analise 11; Rigali, Mary Clare 11; Russell, Shilo 11; Swaim, Shayli 10; Vail, Mariah 12.

Santa Maria

Santa Maria struggled last year, but had good participation numbers and a young squad - should be better this year, but will that translate into wins?

Morro Bay

The Pirates lost sparkplug Ashley Akana (5-4), a second team All-LPL OH and Maureen Moriarity (5-8, Hon.Mntn.), but return MB Ciara Ramos (5-9) and Setter Lorna Porter (5-7) who were 1st & 2nd Team All-LPL respectively. Should compete for a playoff spot.

Templeton

The Eagles lost hitter Diahann Williams (5-7, 1st Tm), setter Kristina Barckley (5-8, HM), and five other seniors. Will rebuild around 2nd Team junior hitter Kiersten Humphries (5-9).
