Boys Water Polo
There were three matches of note on Thursday:
Lompoc took on a very good Atascadero team, and early on it looked like it was going according to the pattern of recently established history when the Braves fell behind 8-1 with 4:12 left in the 2nd quarter. But the Braves made a goal a minute later and another just before the half (Robert Macias' 2nd & 3rd of the game) to cut the margin to five (8-3).
In the third stanza, Lompoc inched closer, shutting out the Greyhounds while scoring once in the middle of the period (Alex Stone) and again close to the buzzer (Daniel Dunaetz). The Atascadero bench began to get a tad nervous, and when the Braves Kyle Pickles popped one in with 5:53 to go in the fourth - the substitution rotation stopped and the starters were in for the duration.
Didn't matter. The excellent Lompoc play continued and the Greyhounds really started sweating when Pickles hit again and closed it to one (8-7) and got the crowd roaring with 1:59 left, and it's hard to see guys sweating in the pool. The clock was counting down when Max Zappas scored Atascadero's first goal in about 2 1/2 quarters at the 0:21 mark. The Braves fought back, however, with Carl Thacker launching one into the net with 7 seconds left on the clock. Those last few ticks became a quick game of keepaway, and the Greyhounds escaped with a 9-8 victory, but no desire for a rematch.
The JV game followed a similar pattern, as the junior level team lost by a quite respectable 9-6 score. The Lompoc squad, with five members playing their first ever water polo match, fell behind 3-0 at 2:02 in the 1st, and were down 4-1 at halftime. [ The lone goal was by Adam Cameron.] Two quick goals in the third by Josh Rondash brought the locals to within one (4-3), but that was as close as they got. The margin remained 2-3 goals for the rest of the game, despite goals by Patrick Horenburger, Josh Menenzes, and Naem Nameh.
In other games Paso Robles sank Morro Bay 17-1, and powerhouse Dos Pueblos easily swam past Righetti 13-4.

Coaching News
There was some additional news floating around the pool on Thursday. According to reports, LHS has found their new girls water polo coaches. Rebecca Ruiz, former Cuesta College standout & member of the Braves Championship team has apparently been slated to fill the position left vacant by the retirement of John McNutt last Spring. She reportedly will be assisted by Barbara Grabowski, and Jackie Jaenicke will continue with the JV for one more year. It was also stated that the program had 37 girls out for fall camp.

LPL Girls Vollball
Likewise most of the LPL started Volleyball action, as six teams took to the road against PAC-7 opponents:
Lompoc didn't enjoy their trip to Righetti as all three levels fell to the Warriors, with the varsity loosing 25-6, 25-16, 25-15. That however was a significant improvement over the score posted against the Warriors last year and as Head Coach Don Sevella put it - "We did a number of good things, we just didn't string them together".
Cabrillo drew the SLO Tigers, and pushed them a bit before falling 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 25-21. The JV also lost 25-17, 25-14, but also gave SLO a scare - taking a brief lead (12-11) mid-way thruogh the second game.
Santa Maria fell to the Pioneer Valley Panther 25-14, 25-27, 25-12, 25-14.
St. Joseph was just nosed out by the Paso Bearcats 16-25, 25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 18-16 rollercoaster of a match. Dayna Drewniak [8 kills, 25 digs], Mariah Vail [25 assists], and Lizzy Mitchell [11 kills] led the Pirates.
Santa Ynez "Soos-ed & Squires-ed" the AG Eagles 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 in a match-up of two of the areas premiere squads. Co-MVP's of the LPL in 2007 Kelsey Soos [48 assists, 5 aces, 5 kills], and Aly Squires [17 kills, 4 blocks, 2 aces] joined with Courtney Martin [4 kills, 2 aces, 7 digs] to pull off the lone LPL win of the night.
Morro Bay lost 25-19, 25-18, 25-27, 25-19 at Atascadero.
Templeton, the seventh LPL team, was also on the road, taking on Coast Union. The Eagles ran into a tough Bronco outfit and lost 23-25, 25-12, 25-9, 25-13.

The planned three-way meet at Atascadero with Morro Bay and Lompoc was essentially turned into a scrimage, due to the youth and inexperience of all three teams. No official scores were kept.

JV/ Frosh Football
Lompoc
The Frosh team found out what a week of bad practices can lead to, as they ran into a Pirate buzz-saw at Santa Ynez, dropping the game 34-0. The Braves who were working without tapes to prepare from had apparently had difficulty focusing on the job at hand during the week - and it showed. The Pirates took advantage of Lompoc turnovers, offensive problems, and a propensity to give up the "big play" defensively to take a 27-0 half-time lead. But as Coach Paul Terrones told his charges - " the good news is that we can get better". Luis Ruiz & Edgar Sainz were selected as captains for next week based on their relentless play.
Cabrillo
Cabrillo
The dean of Cabrillo football coaches, Bob Radford was a little bit apprehensive about his JV squad's first game. Last week he watched their opponent, Righetti, compile a 58-0 lead over Pioneer Valley through three quarters, and he was wondering about just how good the Warriors were.
He needn't have bothered. The Conquistadors used sufficating defense to completely shut down, and shut out, the high-powered Righetti attack 17-0.
The Conquistadors took a 2-0 lead before the half on a safety by Nolan Williams who tacked a ballcarrier in the endzone. The offense got in on the fun when Austin Camblin scored on a 30 yard reverse that was set up by a Righetti fumble a few plays into the third quarter. The margin was then pushed to 10-0 by a Matt Giles safety, as he took down another runner in the endzone.
The final score came in the fourth period when the Warriors QB attempted to kick a loose ball out of the endzone, but instead of kicking it out the back, kicked it to the side where it was recovered by Cameron Stevens for a touchdown. Twenty Vasquez kicked the PAT to complete the scoring.
Cabrillo takes on Dos Pueblos next week, a team the frosh lost to last year 8-0 - a loss they are looking to avenge. In other news, the previously scheduled game against the Santa Maria JV on October 3rd has been cancelled because the Saints do not have enough kids. A replacement game against the Arroyo Grande JV has been scheduled for the 2nd of October at AG.
The Cabrillo Frosh won at home on Thursday 28-7.
