Cabrillo JV Wins Championship

The Cabrillo JV softball squad won twice on Saturday to capture the Championship of the CHS JV Tournament.

While the 'Best JV Team in the Valley' title is still up for grabs, here are some contenders -

BOYS JV TENNIS

Cabrillo

The Conqs spent last week carving out their position as the likely #2 team in the LPL - nobody is going to beat Santa Ynez, with the possible exception of the Pirate's backups. The big one was on Tuesday, when they defeated a Templeton squad, that like Cabrillo, had only lost in the LPL to Santa Ynez. Thursday they swamped an improving group from Santa Maria. They have accomplished this despite losing one of their better doubles players, Kevin Oseguera, to a thoracic viral infection that temporarily landed him in the hospital. That, and other absences for various reasons, necessitated a significant reshuffle of the line-up versus the Eagles.

Championship Game

Cabrillo 6, Righetti 3

In a second round game last week the Conqs and the Righetti Warriors went to the International tie-breaker, and it was not until the bottom of the 8th inning that the issue was decided.

In Saturday's Championship game rematch, the locals decided to strike early - real early. Leadoff batter and 2nd baseman Ashala Martin smacked a ball to deep right-center and legged out a home run with the game barely underway. It was part of a three run 1st that saw singles by Stacy Harmon, Beth Radabaugh and Cami Files, with a wild pitch and error by the "home team" visitors. They added 2 more in the 2nd, and 1 in the 4th to win 6-3.

In the 2nd and 5th innings Righetti sent 6 batters to the plate, scoring 1 run and 2 runs respectively, but both times they stranded runners in scoring position with grounders to Martin at second-base for routine third outs.

Nathalia Powell went all seven stanzas in the circle, fighting through a bad patch (double-single-single) in the fifth. She allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, and a walk. She had 5 strike-outs, including a crucial one in the bottom of the 1st, when a single, the Conqs lone error, and a wild pitch had runners on 2nd & 3rd with two out. Melissa Balaam started at pitcher, throwing 3 innings for the Warriors, and was relieved at the top of the 4th by Alyssa Garcia.

Third Place
Paso Robles 8, Templeton 0
Another rematch from last weekend, a 5-3 Paso win, was still fairly close until the Bearcats explode for 4 runs in the 6th inning. Mariah (? Melendez) had a complete game 1-hitter with 10 strikeouts, while Leah Gibson and Amanda Burgh both doubled.

Consolation Championship
Lompoc 13, Carpenteria 2 [6 Innings]

The 'visiting' Braves scored in every inning (1,4,3,1,2,2) while Cera Mitchell blanked the Eagles until the bottom of the 5th.

A leadoff triple, 2 singles (1 a bunt), and a passed ball allowed 1 run in and put runners on 2nd & 3rd. After the second out was recorded by strike-out, another single brought in run #2, and left runners on 1st & 3rd. A stolen base, and a walk that loaded the bases, brought a pitching change.

The clearly tiring Mitchell who had pitched well, allowing only a few base-runners in the first four innings, was replaced by Jasmine Taylor who blew three successive pitches by the batter to end the inning. Taylor was tagged for a leadoff double in the top of the 6th, but tallied another 'K' and two ground balls to close out the game.

The last out was recorded at 3rd on a throw by the shortstop, Yvonne Luna, and was the final example in a series of base-runner erasures via the tag. One runner was thrown out at home following a wild pitch, another singled, took 2nd on an outfield error, and was rung up trying for 3rd. One other runner was caught attempting to steal 2nd.

The offense was also cranked up. Shortstop Merissa Brady hit a homer in the 4th, April Tuomi
had an RBI double, and Renita Richardson's double plated two.

Seventh Place
Santa Barbara 8, Santa Maria 6
If ever a team took comfort from a loss - this was it. The Saints have been being blasted (see games vs LHS & CHS last week), but they were in this one. It was tied as late as the top of the 5th, and Santa Maria had a runner thrown out at home plate.

Other Tournament Games

Lompoc 29, Santa Barbara 1
For the third time in 8 days the Braves prove that they are much better than a "Santa" team.
Not much to say about this one, except that Katie Berryman had a complete game, and the Braves hit, and hit, and hit, and hit...

[Including this weekend's games the Braves are hitting at a .368 clip, with 6 triples and 19 doubles. Nine of the 13 on the roster are hitting .350 or better, led by Katie Berryman (.524 BA, .762 SLG, .615 OBP). They have recieved more free passes (52) and hits (86) than have struck-out (48). And lest you think they are just bats - they have a 53-5 stolen base to caught stealing ratio.]

Cabrillo 11, Templeton 0
The Conqs scored 2 in the second, 6 in the 4th, and added 3 more in the top of the 5th to run-rule this one. Kaylie Chard was the hurler for this one, striking-out 4 versus 2 hits and no walks.
Righetti 7, Paso Robles 2
Melissa Balaam had a complete game in the victory.

Carpenteria 16, Santa Maria 4
The Saints had another tough outing.

Youth Sports

Babe Ruth Baseball

Although Little League games started several weeks ago, and the LGSA season is almost over, Babe Ruth Opening Day was on Saturday. As the report on the LLR Forum put it ---

It was a great day for baseball at George Meyer Field on Saturday. The weather was good, the barbecue was better (and sold out), and there were three competitive games. The Medics topped the Elks 6-4 in the opener, the Chem Kids outlasted the American Legion 16-15, and V & J rebounded from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Raiders 5-4. The late Bill Vance, the 'V' of V & J, sure would have enjoyed it.
