LPL ACTION

SOFTBALL

@ Morro Bay (11-0, 3-0 LPL) 3, Cabrillo (11-1, 2-1 LPL) 0
Morro Bay catcher Claire Hoose called the right pitches and pitcher Kim Dauer followed her lead, resulting in a typically impressive outing for Dauer. The two work out almost every day, including Dauer's pitching lessons on the weekends, and it shows.

In Friday's 3-0 Los Padres League win over Cabrillo, the star senior struck out her average 13 batters, while scattering three hits and a single walk over seven innings. Dauer posted her fifth shutout of the season, improving to 8-0.

Cabrillo, however, presented an extra challenge. The Conqs were 11-0, had never been shut out, and on only four occasions were held to five runs or less. But careful study by Hoose led to a plan that worked from the start.

Dauer struck out the side in the first, third, and fourth inninings, allowing only a single in the first and another base-runner in the second. She didn't give up her second hit until the fifth.

Meanwhile the Pirate offense pushed a run across in the second.
Ciara Ramos' lead-off walk and subsequent steal of second base allowed her to score on Karly Alfirevic’s single up the middle. It was only the sixth time Cabrillo has been scored against this year.

Cabrillo's starting pitcher, sophomore southpaw Kiley Shae Aldredge, struck out two and was solid all day - only giving up three runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter.

Morro Bay collected a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Cabrillo had some chances late, forcing Dauer to pitch out of jams in the last two innings.

Gabi Palacios began the sixth inning by reaching on a fielding error, but ultimately was stranded at third after Dauer retired the next three hitters.

In the seventh, a one-out double, a strikeout, and a walk brought the tying run to the plate. Trouble was averted, however, when a Cabrillo pinch hitter was induced to fly out - ending the game.

St Joseph 14, Santa Ynez 0
Mariah Cochiolo (4-5) clouted the 2nd pitch of the game for a homer, and later added a double and two singles. Already up 9-0, the Knights had 6 hits, including 3 triples, in the seventh inning.

BASEBALL
@ Santa Barbara 9, Lompoc 3
The Braves offense was late arriving on this road trip, as they only scored 1 run through five, before tacking a run on in each of the last two innings. Dons starter Danny Zadona struck out 10 in four innings, then turned a 4-1 lead over to sophomore Colli Dewell. Dewell struck out the first two batters he faced, pushed the lead to 7-1, 8-2, and 9-3.

Cody Berryman tripled leading off the 7th, and scored on Nick Tatigue's (2-3) single, but Dewell erased the small ralley by striking two more to end the game.

Lompoc (9-2, 2-1 LPL) had 3 runs on 8 hits and 1 error, Santa Barbara (5-4) plated 9 runners with 10 hits and 2 errors. They scored 1 run in each of the first two innings, and 2 in the fourth. Lompoc tallied a run in the top of the fifth, and the Dons responded with 3 in the bottom half. Trey Barnett (2-4, 3 RBI) laced a bases-loaded double bringing in 2 runs, and another run scored with Barnett moving to 3rd after an error on the throw to the plate. Joey Gonzales (3-4, RBI) and Jack Crummer (2-3, RBI, 3 RS) led the offense for Santa Barbara.

Cabrillo 14, @ Morro Bay 3
Second-bagger Zach Pecyna went 4-5 and drove in 7 runs, including a grand slam in the fourth, to move the Conqs (3-0 LPL) into first place in the LPL race.

@ Santa Ynez 11, St Joseph 4
Pirate Head Coach Dave Keuhn picked up his 300th win, as Santa Ynez (3-1 LPL) moved into second place in league play. St Joseph (2-2) falls into 4th behind Lompoc (2-1).

Sean Rowen, following his no-hitter last year, again gave the Knights fits, throwing 5 shut-out innings before being 'iced' by his own teams success. The Pirates sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring 9 runs, in the bottom of the fifth. Rowan had a pair of singles in that parade to the plate, but wasn't the same pitcher in the top of inning number 6. He allowed 2 hits and surrenderred two walks, eventually beng charged with 3 runs, before Todd Whitmore came in to clean up.

Templeton 6, Santa Maria 3
Coach Mark Smith's Eagles (1-7, 1-2 LPL) picked up their first victory of the season, largely due to timely hitting and the efforts of Chad McGill (3-3, RBI, Run Scored) and Dan Wheeler (2-2, RBI). Santa Maria (2-9, 0-4) mustered just three hits, half of the six allowed by Saints pitchers Michael Ybarra (5 innings), Jonathan Romero and Joseph Guerrero.

Other Recent LPL Scores

Track & Field
The St Joseph girls (4-0 LPL) easily rolled (93-43) past Templeton, but the boys (1-3) fell to the Eagles, losing the meet on the final event for the third time in LPL competition this year.

Swimming / Diving
The St Joseph girls swamped the Morro Bay Pirates (102-66), while the St Joseph boys just nipped the hardy crew from the land of the rock (84-81).

Santa Ynez and Santa Maria split their contest, with the Pirate girls (96-73) and the Saints boys (89-80) prevailing.
