Not Since 1971

Thursday, Apr. 02, 2009

What were you doing in the spring of 1971 ? Many of you were not yet born, and the high school seniors that year are now about 55 years old. The reason I ask is that, according to reports from LHS coaching veteran Jim Warrick, Lompoc had not lost to the Santa Maria Saints in boys track and field since that time. Until Thursday evening, that is. The girls squeaked out a thin win.

BOYS TENNIS

@ St. Joseph 11, Lompoc 7
The Braves couldn't win the close ones, losing 4 of the 5 sets decided by a 7-5 score or tie-breaker.

The Knights dominated singles play, with Jake Eszes (#1) and frosh Hayes Dunn (#2) both winning their three sets while losing 3 games and 4 games respectively. The Braves singles players made some headway versus the Knight's Tyler Chamness, but he avoided the sweep by defeating Juan Morales 7-6 (7-3). That meant Lompoc had to try and make up the difference in doubles.

Top duo, Alex Jensen / Joel Martin swept to keep things close, but the #2's, Oscar Rodriguez / Jesus Abrego lost two that were the pivots for the match. Leading James Xing / Jacob Goeres 6-5, their service game let them down, and they fell in a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak. The Knights Taylor Monroy / Matt Hiltner then clipped them 7-5 in another nailbiter.

Doubles Niles Johnson / Brian Turton (St Joe) & Cooper Barrick / Carlos Diaz (Lompoc) each won two out of three sets.

@ Santa Maria [4-5, 2-4 LPL] 10, Cabrillo 8
The Saints received sweeps from Elias Murillo and Jonny Lazaro, won enough in doubles to counter a 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 sweep by the Conq #2 doubles pair of David Terrones / Jeff Rodriguez.

Santa Ynez [8-3, 7-0 LPL] 13, Morro Bay 5
Not surprisingly, Juan Ferrer & Miles Seemann both swept three sets, but those were the only points for the Pirates of the South in singles. All three Morro Bay singles players picked up one point. Cutis Cole / Austin White and Logan Deats / Grant Collison also swept for the orange.

Paso Robles 13, Templeton 5
The singles were highlighted by the Bearcats’ Matt Pridgeon holding on to beat Templeton’s Brody Peralla 7-6 (7-5), and the Eagle's #2 Jeff Eisemann winning 2 of his 3 sets.

The Jordan Hattar / Owen Sebo 6-4 win over the Bearcats’ Scott Weller / Fabian Wollersheim tandem allowed Templeton to avoid a sweep in doubles.
