Aaaand the Winner is ....

.....Not who you think !!!!
It was a nice, relatively mild day out at La Purisima on Thursday (above) for the LPL golf gathering, but the deceptively mild-mannered looking course was the clear winner. The 'easier' front nine exacted a tax of about 5 strokes a head, driving several of the 31 competitors into unfamiliar territory.

YMCA Golf Tournament
Hopefully, though, the big winners will be the kids at the local YMCA. The 12th Annual "Kids for Character" Golf tournament is Friday, Oct 15th at the Village Country Club. Spaces are still available. Info (805) 736-3483.

LPL Girls Golf
LPL Tournament #5
Medalist
- The winner .... Santa Ynez Pirate Maddi Shean. She carded a 40 to beat Morgan Salm (Cabrillo) by 3, and teammate Kristen Henno by 4. It was the first tournament medalist score in the 40's and thus the highest medalist score this season.

The Pirates also took the team title, Cabrillo reclaimed 2nd place from Nipomo, and Lompoc edged Morro Bay for fourth. The Braves win set up an interesting final week in LPL play. Both Lompoc and the Bay Pirates were tied for tourney stroke average (307.75) entering this match and the teams meet twice next week. Lompoc hosts Morro Bay at La Purisima on Monday, and the regular season concludes with the final tournament at Morro Bay on Thursday.

LPL Girls Tennis
The LPL began the second round of round-robin play on Tuesday.
@ Santa Ynez 14, Cabrillo 4
Emily Ineman, the Santa Ynez #1, is a bit like an MLB closer in reverse. She enters the match early to take out the opponents top players as needed, then cedes the court to various subs to deal with the lesser lights. She is undefeated in league play this season. Cabrillo beat some of down-ballot types & subs in singles, but the doubles were skunked. Magdalena Fabikova and Nikki Peirtsegaele each won half of the Conqs four points.

Pirates [10-6, 7-0 LPL]: Emily Ineman 2-0, Katie Voorhis 1-0, Kathleen de Goede 1-1, Lauren Hemming 0-1, Sydney Tack 1-2. Heather Vellekamp/ Mylee Curtis 3-0, Bianca Capasso/ Kylie Petersen 3-0, Kat Rocha/ Breanna Bregy 2-0, Melinda Wilson/ Jana Deming 1-0.
Conqs [6-4, 6-1]: Singles - Magdelena Fabikova 2-1 (4-6 Ineman, 6-1 Kathleen DeGoede, 6-2 Sydney Tack), Ashley Bowman 0-3, Nikki Peirtsegaele 2-1. Doubles - Bree Piper-Williams/ Kaitlin Phillips 0-3, Alena Taber/Andriana Siefe 0-3, Lauren Dalton/ Julie De Vonage 0-3.

Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 13, Santa Ynez 5
This one didn't go as many expected either. Last month, JV mentor Doug Meeder regarded Cabrillo's trip to Santa Ynez as a lost opportunity. The Conqs lost 10-8, but as Meeder put it - "We left some points on the court."

This time, with a slightly revamped line-up and home-court advantage, Cabrillo clearly dominated the Pirates. They were quite competitive in most of the sets they lost, and posted a 9 - 2 advantage in sets decided by 4 games or more. Sam Warner & Alex Siefe, the #1 doubles, swept - giving up just 3 games in 3 sets.

The Conqs got off to a fast start, going 5-1 in the first round, but Meeder credited superior depth for the win. Cabrillo was 1-5 vs the Pirate #1's, but 12-0 against the rest. Santa Ynez was missing a couple of girls, but coach Meeder was undetered - "I still think we would have taken them."
