Tuesday - Tennis & Volleyball & Wednesday Update

Magdalena Fabikova, shown with "hostdad" Dennis, has provided a major boost to the CHS Girls Tennis Team this season. The exchange student from Častikov, Slovakia, has only lost two sets so far this year - to the number 1's from Pioneer Valley & Santa Ynez.

WEDNESDAY UPDATE

LPL Water Polo
Cabrillo
18, Lompoc 3
[COLAC, Cabrillo host] [Story]

It wasn't close. Brayson Ogan, Emmett Hill, and Marcus Thiele led an onslaught that saw 11 Conquistadors score. Meanwhile the Conq defense stiffled Lompoc for three quarters.

Cabrillo feasted on the Braves defense, despite the valiant effort of Lompoc goalie David Barber. Barber stopped half of the Conquistadors first period shots, but Cabrillo still took a 5-0 lead.

He repeated the feat in the second quarter, stopping the first 3 Conq shots, before surrendering 3 goals in the last 2 minutes of the half. He also ended both periods with creditable long-range shots on goal that had to be blocked by Cabrillo keeper.

Fresh Conq subs took over in the third period, scoring 9 goals. Lompoc Head Coach Kevin Hicks was very dissapointed with the Braves lack of agressiveness in the period and let his charges know it. They responded with a better effort in the fourth - outscoring Cabrillo 3-1.

One fourth quarter event, that really revved up the mostly Cabrillo crowd, was the entry of Conq goalie Felix Talkin to field play with 1:31 remaining. The team fed him the ball in close on several occasions, but he was stoned by Barber.

Cabrillo [8-9, 1-1 LPL]: Goals - Brayson Ogan 5, Emmett Hill 3, Marcus Thiele 2, Simon Reep, Nathan Chandler, Keenan Andrews, Anthony Taylor, Patrick Casarez, Zach Olivera, Chris Naughton, Kyle Lopez.

Lompoc [2-8, 0-2 LPL]: Patrick Horenburger - 3 Goals, David Barber - 13 Saves

There was no JV game - Lompoc does not field a squad this year.

@ Santa Ynez 16, Morro Bay 2
When the Pirates clashed before, SY only led Morro Bay 4-2 at halftime before winning 12-4. They seemed to be afronted by that situation and blew the Pirates of the North out of the pool - 9 players scored.
Santa Ynez (13-4-1, 2-0 LPL): Lastra 3, Parlato 2, Ozimec 2, Hatchell 2, Illes 2, Deats 2, Taylor, Imani, Cateraino.
Morro Bay (1-13, 0-2): Goals - Keary Kennedy, Tyler Fraser. Saves - Mac Reinhart 6, Shane Crockett 5.

@
Nipomo
20, Santa Maria 7
The Titans were similar to old time Chicago voters - they scored early and often, recording their first point only 13 seconds into the game. They led 7-1 after the first quarter & 13-2 at halftime. Nipomo keeper Kirk Wilenius fueled the counter-attack, and was very agressive on defense throughout the contest.

Titans (10-4, 2-0 LPL): Cole Hollaway - 6 goals, Mark Baker - 6 goals, J.W. Dobbe - 2 two goals. Kirk Wilenius - 17 saves.
Santa Maria (1-1 LPL): Damian Juarez - four goals.

Yup !! A sister-kisser. The two squads tied, although the Pirates' Maddison Shean carded a 38, for Medalist honors. The Titans were led by Courtney Cuzick 46.
Shean's 38 was her best score in LPL action this season.

TUESDAY'S ACTION
It was overcast, rather breezy, and threatening rain for the home-standing local tennis squads on Tuesday. In volleyball action, the Conquistadors furnished their own rain in the Cabrillo gym, while Lompoc was swept away at Paisola Pavillion.

Schedule Note: While Lompoc and Santa Maria face each other Thursday in the the initial round of truncated frosh football action in the LPL, Cabrillo has avoided consecutive weeks off by picking up a game at Hueneme. Game time likely is 4pm., but check with the Athletic Office for details.

Note #2: Don't forget the Lompoc/Cabrillo water polo clash tomorrow (6 Oct) at the COLAC downtown.

LPL Girls Tennis

Nipomo 11, Lompoc 7 [David Bickmore Courts, LHS]

In a match-up between two winless teams, it was the Titans who executed in crunch time. They won tiebreakers in each of the first two rounds for 4-2 advantages, and sealed it with a 3-3 score in the third. [Story]

The Braves shuffled their lineup, changing #3 singles and #1 & #2 doubles. Marielle Tabin from #2 doubles replaced frosh Emily Gracyk at #3 singles. Gracyk joined Ashala Martin (#1 Dbls) at #2, and Tabin's ex-partner Julie Abrego moved up to join Cera Mitchell on the "1's".

There was also a mid-match alteration to the #3 Braves duo. In round 2, Amargiete Larios was drilled in the eye by a ball and had to retire. Rather than take a forfeit, Titan coach Jim Fisher allowed Larios' partner Catalina Perez & sub Sarah Carillo to finish the set. The contest, 4-1 when the accident occurred, ended in a 6-1 Nipomo victory.

Braves: Singles - Sameeha Husayn 2-1, Nicole Nomany 2-1, Marielle Tabin.
Husayn lost only a 6-7 (4-7) set to Underwood and is 14-4 versus LPL competition.
Doubles - Julie Abrego/ Cera Mitchell, Emily Gracyk/ Ashala Martin, Catalina Perez/ Amargiete Larios (Sarah Carillo).

Titans: Singles [5-4] - Tessa Underwood 3-0, Lauren Kueffler, Bianca Grant.
Doubles [6-3] - Leena Kilpelainen/ Brenda Barrera 3-0, Bobbi Johnson/ Kelly Barrett, Ann Wardlaw/ Abby Merrill. Nipomo used a number of 3rd round subs.

Cabrillo 10, Santa Maria 8
Magdalena brought the "Fab", Bowman toughed out a sweep, and doubles got just enough in round 3 to win the match. Conq singles were 2-1 in all three rounds, but the score was tied at 6-all after two because the Saints doubles duplicated that effort. In the third, however, Alena Taber/ Andrianna Siefe took a 2nd doubles point in the round and the tenth point for Cabrillo in the last doubles set contested. They also were the only Conq duo to take two points in the match.

Conquistadores (4-3, 4-1 LPL):
Singles [6-3] - Magdalena Fabikova (now at #1) 3-0 [6-3, 6-2, 6-0]; #2 Ashley Bowman 3-0; #3 Kaitlyn Phillips 0-3 [ 3-6, 5-7, 4-6].
Doubles [4-5] - Bree Piper-Williams/ Nikki Peirtsegaele 1-2 [3-6, 6-0, 5-7]; Alena Taber/ Andrianna Siefe 2-1 [3-6, 6-2, 6-2]; Kaylin Rentschler/ Eloisa Castillo 1-0 (1st Rd 2-6); Julie "Noah" De Vonage/ Lauren Daulton 1-1 (6-0, 3-6).

Santa Maria [5-6, 2-3 LPL]:
Singles - Glenda Polanco 1-2 [3-6, 5-7, 6-3]; Deenice Natividad 1-2 [2-6, 1-6, 7-5]; Mitzi Estevez 1-2 [0-6, 3-6, 6-4].
Doubles - Eunice Gonzalez/ Elizabeth Queja 3-0 [6-3, 6-3, 6-2]; Mae Roma/ Ellen Sok 0-3 Lupe Garcia/ Star Torres [7-5, 2-6, 6-3].

Santa Ynez 13, @ Morro Bay 1
The match was stopped early due to rain with Santa Ynez awarded the victory. All 3 third round singles contests, and one of the doubles sets were washed away.

Santa Ynez (8-5, 5-0 LPL): Singles - Emily Ineman 2-0, Kathleen De Goede 2-0, Sydney Tack 1-1. Doubles - #1 Heather Vellekamp/ Mylee Curtis 3-0 [6-1, 6-1, 6-0]; #2 Bianca Capasso and Kylie Petersen 3-0 (6-0, 6-0, 6-0); Breanna Bregy/ Kat Rocha 2-0.
Morro Bay (2-3 LPL): Singles - Megan Hanson 1-1, Joyce Lo 0-2, Megan Reitz 0-2. Doubles - Sierra Wilcox/ Lily Quirk (3rd Rd-Melissa Galinata) 0-3, Katie Lockwood/ Heather Montgomery 0-2, Clare Olson/ Emily Franzman 0-3.

LPL Girls Volleyball
Serving was the name of the game Tuesday night, as all three winners demonstrated great competence at the skill.

@ Cabrillo 3, Santa Maria 0
[25-6, 25-14, 25-10]
If you're looking for a good way to start a match, giving the ball to Kelly O'Connell is not a bad idea. The Conq senior had 10 straight serves to start game #1, and Cabrillo was never challenged, despite giving up a couple of cheapie points at the end.

Game 2 was better for the visitors. Cabrillo got 8 straight serves from Rhiannon Saxe to go up 10-3, but the Saints shook off that early Conquistador lead to close to within three points (14-11). The Conqs then hit the gas and outscored the Saints 11-3, powered by serving streaks from Kristina Goodchild, O'Conner, and Saxe.

Game 3 - more serving. O'Connell served 6 times, including 2 aces, before the game devolved into a somewhat sloppy mess. Helped by 4 more aces, Cabrillo was able to steadily build it's lead despite the inconsistent play by both teams. Kayla Brooks was finally able to restore order with 6 serves (2 aces) to close out the match.

Kiley Shae Aldridge was everywhere - digging, setting, attacking, & serving; Felicia Bowen helped get the team rolling with some thunderous kills, and everyone contributed.

According to Cabrillo Head Coach Jim Hilliard - "That's a scrappy Santa Maria team, but we got them to play our game.", he then attributed the win to "Great team ball". I still think giving O'Connell the ball is a good idea.

JV: Cabrillo 2, Santa Maria 0 [25-5, 25-12]
Frosh: Santa Maria 1, Cabrillo 1 [25-20, 15-25, 15-9]

Nipomo 3, @Lompoc 0 [Bryan Ayer Court]
[25-22, 25-13, 25-16]

The Titans served the Braves off the court - posting a season high 17 aces.
Titans (14-8, 4-0): Stephanie Persky - 9 kills, 5 aces; Candyce Venancio - 6 kills, 6 aces.
Braves (1-11, 1-4): Erika Slikker - 3 kills.

Santa Ynez (11-7, 4-0 LPL) 3, @Morro Bay (1-3 LPL) 0
[25-9, 25-11, 25-12]

Did we mention serving ? The Pirate pair were knotted at 6-6 in the first set when Annika Bastanchury, of the Santa Ynez version Pirates, served 12 straight points. She had 18 service points in the match, teammate Ellen Hemming added 12 more and Rachel Szeyller pounded 11 kills. Delanee Stapp had five solo blocks against Morro Bay’s season kill leader for the southerners.
