Black/Blue X 2, Well One Anyway...

The weather intervened in a planned double-header at Lompoc High School. The Cabrillo at Lompoc tennis match, and the reverse JV contest, were both delayed to Wednesday (20 Oct), but the JV & varsity volleyball encounters went ahead as planned in Paisola Pavillion. The other planned LPL matches were able to be played, however.

Santa Ynez is still the odds-on favorite for the championship, but after that is a free-for-all. Cabrillo stayed in the race for the 2nd spot in the LPL - but that has become very crowded territory. The 'Rock Pirates' have been messing things up lately, turning an orderly situation into chaos. Morro Bay has won 4 consecutive matches, including victories over the 3 teams (Cabrillo, Templeton, Nipomo) that were directly ahead of them in the standings.

LPL Standings (Team, LPL Record): Santa Ynez 7-0, Cabrillo 5-3, Morro Bay 5-3, Nipomo 4-3, Templeton 4-4, Santa Maria 1-6, Lompoc 1-7.

Cabrillo 3, @ Lompoc 0 {Story}
[25-18, 25-17, 25-13]
The improving Braves looked like they were capable of winning, but the Conquistadores always seemed to have one more shot in them. "We hang with them - but then they shift into another gear." according to Lompoc Head Coach Aaron Batula.

In game 1, it happened after the Braves had pulled to within a point (15-16), but were then outscored 9-2 down the stretch. Lompoc stayed with Cabrillo in game 2 until they were a point down again (18-17), but subsequent to a Conq timeout and a sideout, Cathy Lynes served 6 consecutive points to power Cabrillo to the win.

That seemed to break the Braves back, and although they continued to play hard in game #3, they were never really able to challenge Cabrillo. They stayed within 5-6 points till about midway, but the conquistadores once more hit the gas and outpaced Lompoc 13-5 to end the match.

Note: Cabrillo's Kristina Goodchild was on crutches at the match - she expects to be out about 2 weeks.

Conqs: Kiley Shae Aldridge - 21 Assists, 3 Aces, 1 Kill; Kayla Brooks - 8 Digs, 5 Kills; Felicia Bowen - 8 Kills, 4 Blocks; Nikki Friend - 4 Aces, 7 Digs; Breanna Farley - 5 Kills, 3 Blocks.

Braves: Erika Slikker - 8 Kills, 2 Aces, 8 Digs; Casey Stumpo - 2 Aces, 7 Digs; Danielle Hamon - 14 Assists; Elayna Hockett - 5 Digs.

Junior Varsity:
Cabrillo 2, Lompoc 0
[25-10, 25-22]
The first game was your standard type semi-competitive clash, but in the second game, Lompoc had a shot at the win. About halfway through they began to believe it, and shortly thereafter, so did Cabrillo. The Braves led by a pair of points on several ocassions, before the Conqs tied it at 17-all. That was the first of 5 ties, and 4 lead changes the rest of the way. The final 3-point advantage was the largest either team had after the midway point of the game.

Morro Bay 3, Nipomo 0
[25-22, 25-15, 25-19]
In the first round of LPL play the Titans swept Morro Bay 3-0. The Pirates returned the favor with a straight-set sweep over Nipomo Tuesday night..

LPL Girls Tennis
Again, Santa Ynez is in the driver's seat for the title. Templeton eases into 2nd with Cabrillo's match being postponed. Those three figure to fight it out for CIF slots.

Meanwhile, the pecking order for the Individual LPL Title looks to be reee-aal interesting. The favorite is the SY Pirates Emily Ineman, but you also have Magdalena Fabikova (Cabrillo), Sameeha Husayn (Lompoc), Erin Roberts (Templeton), and Megan Hansen (Morro Bay). On any given day, Tessa Underwood (Nipomo), or Glenda Polancos (Santa Maria) can take you down, and there is likely some more gals out there lurking in the weeds.

LPL: Santa Ynez 8-0, Templeton 7-2, Cabrillo 6-2, Santa Maria 4-4, Morro Bay 3-6, Nipomo 1-7, Lompoc 0-8.

Morro Bay 10, Nipomo 8
