Boys Basketball Tournaments 12-18 Dec 2012

Cabrillo Head JV Coach Brian Sharpe Ponders the Mysteries of the Teen-age  Mind

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lompoc is at Pacifica (Wed-Sat), Cabrillo at Carpinteria (starting Friday), and both are at the VOTF JV tourney held at Cabrillo (Thur - Sat).

NOTE: The "Australians" noted in the listings for both the NPC and the VOTF are from the Australian Basketball College, a subsidiary of the Australian Basketball Digest. The ABC is primarily what we would call an academy, although they also have a "Post-Graduate Academy". Both are focused on preparing young hoopsters for the US collegiate system.

The College is currently located in the Melbourne area of Victoria, Australia, with campuses both in Melbourne and the suburb of Waverly, but they also have plans to open 4 new sites in locations around the country - including Sydney and Perth. This last fall the organisation started

They brought 3 teams to the Central Coast for the weekend. A 'senior' team that played at the NPC (2-1), BC1 which also played at the NPC (0-3), and BC2 which played a non-tournament game at the NPC and 3 times at the VOTF (3-1). The teams mainly consist of what we would call 10th - 12th graders, and are coached by former NBA player Sedale Threatt and his son, current pro Sedale Threatt, Jr. [STORY]

NOTE 2: I will be adding much more material on the Valley Of The Flowers JV Tournament - including pictures and (hopefully) video.

Game 14 - 2:30 :   Arroyo Grande 67, Santa Ynez  27

Santa Barbara 48, Cabrillo 40
Cabrillo coach Gary West knows his guys can play better, "We probably missed a dozen lay-ups, had over 20 turnovers, and were 5-13 shooting free throws." He was heartened, however, by two factors.

The first, that in spite of the myriad mistakes his team made, they were still in the game against a "team that was supposed to blow us out" right to the end. With less than a minute remaining, the Conqs were down 3 just points with possession of the ball, but "We turned it over and had to start fouling."

The second thing? "These kids played really, really hard."
Conqs [3-4]: Chad Brodhead , Michael Woodard 12, Josh West 7.

Arroyo Grande 67, Santa Ynez 27

Fillmore 62, Nipomo 58
[F: 15,10,18,19 - 62  N: 17,15,11,15 - 58]
Close, but no Cee-gar again, as the Titans gave back a 7 pt halftime advantage in the 3rd period.
Flashes [3-9]: Jalen Rhoades 22 pts (9-13 FT), Jorge Ruiz 21 pts.
Titans [1-11]: Kaileb Mendez 24 (4x3), Freddy Ruiz 12, Quintin Bland 10.

Rio Mesa 67, Bishop Diego 49
Apparently, Rio Mesa didn't need Anthony Teart on Saturday.
Spartans [3-4]: Martel Tyler 23, Erick Zambrano 12 (2 stls), Reggie Dixon 9
Cardinals : Caleb Richey 25, Thomas Lash 11.

San Marcos 63, Channel Islands 54
The Royals saved this one at the stripe - hitting 6-8 4th Qtr FT's to keep afloat despite being out scored after halftime by 6 points.
Royals : Kevin Hempy 19 pts, Uriel Hurtado 17pts, Paxton Ridgway 5-6 FT in 4th.

Cabrillo 82, Orcutt 28
Another rough outing for the Spartans. This time it was the Conqs that rolled them early, taking a 17 point 1Q lead (29-12) and cruising into halftime up 32 (51-19). 10 Cabrillo players scored, and the team hit 13 treys.

A quick 18-4 lead at the end of one was a harbinger of hoops to come.
Titans [1-12]: Freddy Ruiz 11 pts.

Santa Barbara 56, Arroyo Grande 54 [SF]
Tie ball game, 4th quarter, 7 ticks on the game clock with fewer on the shot clock, and Brendan Fay's pass finds Jeff Paschke who lays it in to put the Dons up two. The ensuing AG long range trey attempt, they did hit 9, missed and Santa Barbara had the victory.

Eagles : Brennan Rivera 15, Matt Wilkinson 12.

San Marcos 43, Rio Mesa 38 [SF]
[SM: 5,13,13,12 - 43  RM: 8,12,10,8 - 38]

A great performance by Bryce Ridenour, especially at the line, propelled the Royals to their second win of the season over the Spartans. This one was much closer than that earlier 71-54 Royal win.

San Marcos only had 1 FG in the 4th period, and the Spartans thrice cut the lead to 2 pts last 2 minutes, but Ridenour hit 7-8 FT down the stretch to ice it.
Royals [8-4]: Bryce Ridenour 16 pts (9-10 FT), 8 stls.
Spartans [3-5]: Martel Tyler 17, Reggie Dixon 10.

Valley Of The Flowers Boys JV Basketball Tournament

Thursday, 13 Dec. 2012

3:00 : Santa Maria 56, Orcutt Academy 10
It could be a very long year for the Spartans.
4:30 : Arroyo Grande 58, Lompoc 46
They Braves staged a late comeback to make this one look better.
6:00 : San Luis Obispo 69, Nipomo 40
The Titans made it interesting for a while, but the Tigers size was unanswerable.
7:30 : Cabrillo 61, Bishop Diego 44
[C: 8/14/19/20 - 61  BD: 7/11/18/8]
Cabrillo would surge, and the Cardinals would reel them back in. With 6:20 left in the 4th, Bishop pulled with-in a bucket (43-41) on a long trey. Cabrillo finally woke up and at the 4:55 mark led by 10 (51-41), pulling away to a 15 (59-44) point margin with 2:01 remaining.

Friday, 14 Dec. 2012

2:30 : Pioneer Valley 65, Orcutt Academey 16
[PV: 7,24,20,14 - 65  OA: 5,4,7,0 - 16]
A very, very long year.

4:00 : Santa Maria 46, Bishop Diego 41
[SM: 13,12,10,11 - 46   BD: 12,8,9,12 - 41]

5:30 : Santa Barbara 57, Lompoc 51
[SB: 10,13,13,21 - 57     L: 11,9,18,13 - 51]
Despite a monster performance by B.J. Taylor, Lompoc shot themselves out of this one at the line. They were 13-28 (46%) from the stripe, the Dons were 10-11 (91%). Let's just say that the Dons weren't too upset at foul calls when they hacked a shooter in the 4th.
Braves : B.J. Taylor 26 (10-15 FT), J. O'Byrne 12 (2-3 FT), Darius Dunston 4, Gabe Simon 2, C.  Maxwell 2, Austin Hayes 2, J. Osegueda 2, Rudy Venegas 1.
Dons : Andrew 16 (2x3, 4-4 FT), Jad 12 (1x3, 1-1 FT), Max 10 (2x3), Chris 5 (1x3), Anthony 4 (2-2 FT), Russ 3 (1x3), Jacob 2, David 2 (2-2 FT).

7:00 : Australia JV (BC2) 85, Righetti 43
[A: 20,23,17,25 - 85  R: 11,13,11,8 - 43]

8:30 : San Luis Obispo 62, Cabrillo 24
[SLO: 23,17,17,5 - 62  C: 2,14,5,3 - 24}

Saturday, 15 Dec. 2012

08:00 : Santa Maria 31, Pioneer Valley 25
[SM: 8,7,8,8 -31  PV: 9,2,7,7 - 25]

09:30 : Arroyo Grande 43, Nipomo 35
[14,12,10,7 - 43  N: 13,5,4,13 - 35]

11:00 : Lompoc 59, Pioneer Valley 29
[L: 15,10,14,20 - 59  PV: 11,10,5,3 - 29]
B.J. Taylor missed this one, having been promoted to Varsity. The Braves FT shooting was still anemic (10-22: 1H 4-12, 2H 6-10), but their 2nd half defense (8 pts) and interior passing ware outstanding. They also did a good job of penetrating the lane for the bucket and the foul, but alas ... those pesky FT's.
