Water Wednesday

There was a lot of water about on Wednesday. Water in the pool at Cabrillo HS, of course, water on the pool deck and seating areas due to the rain, naturally. The problem was the water in the power strip that was used to run the timing and scoreboard systems.

And then there is King Triton, "Ruler of the seas", and host of the 9th King Triton's Clash on the Coast Basketball Tournament at Pacifica HS in Oxnard. Pacifica, "Home of the Tritons" (also a pointy, 3 pronged stick) is where the Braves will be spending the next few days.

Girls Water Polo

This would have been a really good day to have an indoor water polo competition, but alas, the COLAC is in its annual downtime. Thus a few huddled masses bundled up to brave the weather up on the hill. The powers-that-be even erected a small pavilion over the scorers table, but some water collected on top and after the 1st quarter of the JV game, poured off the back side and onto the electrical strip powering the scoreboard, 30 second clocks, and the scoring/timing system. The rest of the JV game was hand timed, with 8 minute running clocks for each quarter.

at Cabrillo HS
Cabrillo 14, Paso Robles 9

[C: 2,3,5,4 - 14  PR: 1,3,2,3 -9]

Cabrillo split 2 games with the Bearcats last season, and in the 1st half this looked like a toss-up. Cabrillo scored first, but it was tied 4 all until less than a minute remained int he 2nd quarter. At halftime Cabrillo HC Corey McIntyre, tinkered with a few things, "I'd like to think we made some good adjustments", and Cabrillo pulled away. They took the 3rd period 5-2, eventually moving ahead 13-6, before some silliness down the stretch.  [See Story]

Conqs: Goals - Tori Bray 6, Tancy Aldridge 4, Davis 2, Natalie Wilkie , Sam Carroll. Saves - Demi Ames 5 (4 stls), Jayden Pickles 5 (4 steals).
Bearcats [6-4]: Goals - Kylie Pugh 3, Rebecca Tobey 2, Erica Smeltzer 2. Saves - Marti Rae Grois 12.

Junior Varsity

This was a close game almost throughout. That, combined with the rain, wind, cold, darkness, power problems, communications difficulty, etc., frequently had the coaches, officials, players, and support staff in a state of anxiety, frustration, and a certain amount of grumpiness.

The 1st quarter proceeded with some regularity, and Cabrillo took a 2-0 lead. When the clock power failed, however, every one had difficulty adjusting to the situation. Communication was hampered by having people who were bundled up trying to converse through layers of clothing.

Tempers were further exacerbated by several calls, and non-calls, during the game. This included a Cabrillo goal that was disallowed at the end of the 2nd, because time had expired, but no-one heard the time-keepers.

Cabrillo 7, Paso Robles 5
[C: 3,1,0,3 - 7  PR: 0,3,0,2 - 5]
Cabrillo led 2-0 after one, although the Bearcats had some opportunities. Paso scored the first two goals of the 2nd period, then Cabrillo netted two, before the Bearcats finished off the scoring for the half. Cabrillo thought they had another, but it came after time had expired.

The third quarter was mostly turnovers sandwiched around missed shots - there was no scoring and no exclusions in the period. That changed in the 4th, as the game got a bit chippy. The visitors again scored the 1st pair of goals to take a 5-4 lead, but the Conqs started to draw exclusions. Cabrillo also got the ball into the 2-meter position, where Lily Talkin was holding court, and she cashed 3 times in the last 4 minutes to give the Conqs the win.

Conquistadors [4-1]: Lily Talkin 3, Lauren Billings, Grace Robson, Kelly Ogan, Caitlyn Petterson. Kinsley Edman had numerous saves in goal.
