GIRLS BASKETBALL

Los Padres League

at Lompoc
Templeton 52, at Lompoc 38
[T: 5,18,15,14 - 52   L: 9,7,8,14 - 38]

This was actually a pretty competitive game, but Lompoc's inability to hit lay-ups and short jumpers was decisive. The Braves raced out to a 7-0 lead, and led until 2:37 of the 2nd period, when Mari Stewart hit 2 FT's to put the Eagles ahead. Templeton got back in the game, and started to dominate, when the Braves shooting ability departed the building.

The Braves defense created turnovers with regularity, but they missed an estimated 20+ lay-ups, about a dozen in the 3rd period alone. Emblematic was one possession in the 3rd period when Lompoc had a break-away for a lay-up. It was missed - as were several subsequent shots, none longer than 14" from the hoop. The Braves then fouled the Eagles player that finally got a rebound. More often a Lompoc miss would ignite a successful Eagles fast break

Perhaps fatigue played a role, as the Braves only had 7 players available for the game. One factor that definitely played a part was the performance by Eagles post player Mari Stewart. She played the last 9 minutes of the game with 4 fouls, and was quite effective.

Braves skipper Claudia Terrones summed it up - "We never gave up, we played hard, and in the the end it was the missed lay-ups that killed us.", but, she vowed, "We'll be ready the next time."

Braves [0-1 LPL, 4-5]: Arianna Espinosa 9 (1x3), Lexie Barbosa 8, Riley Sager 7, Chrisshnay Brown 7, Precilla Castellanos 4 (1x3), Shy'anne Dean 3.
Eagles [1-0 LPL, 8-1]: Mari Stewart 17, Marissa Torres 15, Autumn Russell 8, Megan Hattar 6, Paige O'Sullivan 4, Melat Zippi 2.

During volleyball season, I kept telling folks to "Get there early, since the JV/Frosh usually has the best games." That applies to the hoops teams as well. Lompoc scrapped and clawed its way to a win by a single point at Paisola Pavilion Tuesday evening. It wasn't pretty. There were scads of fouls, turnovers galore, and bodies flying all over the place. Not surprisingly FT shooting made a difference. The Braves hit 11-22 (7-11 1st half) while the Eagles shot 9-22 (4-11 1st half). Two points have special significance when you win by one.

Powered by a high-octane defense the Braves were able to double up on the Eagles in the 1st period, but that was only a 5 point margin. It looked like they would increase that a bit headed into the halftime break, but Savannah Spinharney dropped in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to keep the difference at five.

The Eagles nipped at Lompoc's heels throughout the 3rd quarter, as the Braves lead mostly fluctuated between 1 and 4 points. At one point, Spinharney hit a 3 to close to one, but Aryana Lovingood immediately answered with a trey of her own. At the end of the quarter, the lead had been trimmed to 3 points.

In the 4th, Lompoc pushed the margin back to 4, but then got sloppy with the ball. Steal, bucket 40-38, turnover, bucket, 40 all. A few more errors, 40-44, but luckily Templeton missed some FTs that kept the Braves close. At the 3:19 mark, Eagle starter Ajar Kelley fouled out, but they still led by 3 (41-44) at the 2 minute mark. A Destiny Coggins FT got Lompoc to with-in 2, but an Eagles basket put the visitors back up 4. Then it got interesting.

With 1:19 left, Lovingood hit a circus shot off a rebound in the lane. The Braves managed a defensive stop, and Lovingood was fouled on the next possesion, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Spinharn was fouled their next trip down the floor, hitting the first of 2 FTs, but missing the 2nd. Mere seconds later, Lovingood was fouled again, but after shooting 3-3 from the line in the 1st half, missed again. She stayed with it, however, and stole the ball from the Eagle rebounder and scored to pull the Braves up to a 1 point deficit.

Templeton missed several shots and there was a mad scramble for the ball, with Lompoc players saving it on the endline, and twice miraculously on the sidelines. Lovingood drove the lane with 17 seconds left, and missed the shot, but was fouled by Spinharney. It was her 5th, and she was gone. Lovingood potted the 1st for the tie, but missed the 2nd. Bree Benetes, however, snagged the rebound, and was fouled on the putback with 0:14 on the clock. Benetes missed the first, but put Lompoc back in the lead with the 2nd. With 9 seconds remaining, the defense forced another turnover, ran out the clock.

As one observer put it - "It wasn't good , but it was exciting."
