"Expect good things from Lompoc Girls Basketball."

Lompoc Hoops

The Braves varsity girls squad has been working hard the last few weeks, the guys have been playing football.

Brave boys JV Coach Buddy Sims experiences a 'What was that?' moment at a recent scrimmage. The JV got to play twice. First against the Pioneer Valley JV and then against the Panthers Varsity. PV AD/Boys Head Coach Greg Lanthier has a dangerous team by the way.

Lompoc will be very young again this season, but Head Coach Claudia Terrones still expects the squad to do quite well. She noted that in addition to a bit of height, the team had "depth, speed, and agility." They also will need a lot of stamina since t
he Braves will be running again this year.

The sole senior and co-captain Precilla Castellanos will handle duties up top and on the break as the Point Guard. A waterbug, she is very good at penetrating and has a streaky outside shot.  The other co-captain, junior Lexie Barbosa, figures to join with fellow volleyball player and 2012 1st team All-LPL Team member Arianna Espinosa as the starting guards at the 2 & 3 spots. That formidable triumvirate will be backed by Sophomore Jocelyn Taylor.

Lompoc also looks to be strong in the paint. Junior Chrisshnay Brown, sophomore Rylee Sager, and frosh Cheyenne Marmalejo are all likely to get substantial time on the court. Terrones said the line-up wasn't set just yet, but "any of them could start". Frosh twins Ceyenna & Chavon Garrett complete the frontcourt crew.

The Braves face some formidable competition in the LPL, with 16 of the 20 All-LPL Team members eligible to return. Morro Bay loses 3 of the 6 players it had on the all-league team, including 6'3" MVP Hannah Gilbert. The Nipomo Titans graduated 2 of their 3, but the Templeton Eagles return all 5.

Terrones summed up by saying - "Expect good things from Lompoc Girls Basketball." Always do, coach, always do.

The Team
Head Coach - Joseph Smith

Joe Smith thinks he has a pretty good team, he just hopes he gets to see them before their first game. The Braves have tended to have a late start to the season in recent years, including one in which they had one practice before their initial contest. This year figures to be similar since 13 of the 14 varsity players are also on the Varsity Football team. Lompoc's record has suffered in the pre-season, but they should be rolling by the time LPL play rolls around in earnest.

The Braves return guards Torey Sims & Drayton Howell, who should have some backcourt help this year from Simon, Foster, and Maxwell. In the paint, 6'-6" Elijah Bailey provides some length, Joseph Osegueda & Darius Dunston some versatile athleticism, with Glen, Nate, & B.J. Taylor adding a physical presence. The player to watch though, may be Jerard O'Byrne who can fill the basket like his brother did.
