LPL Tournament Finals
(City of Lompoc Aquatic Center)

Tournament continued from Tuesday. [HERE]

It was a full day at the pool, with all three games running long and 2 of them accounting for 5 overtime periods.

Overtime Note: If the the teams are tied at the end of regulation, they go to overtime. This consists of two phases - the 1st phase is two timed overtime periods, with a break in between. This phase is treated like a pair of additional quarters.

If the teams are still tied at the end of Phase 1, they then go to Phase 2 which is a series of periods in which the first goal scored (AKA the 'Golden Goal') wins. Regular Varsity Water Polo periods are 7 minutes long. Overtime periods are three minutes.

Game 5 (5th Place):

Santa Maria 18, Lompoc 9
[Lom 1,2,4,2 - 9   SM 6,5,4,3 - 18]

Another break away goal by the Saints
Lompoc just never got any traction in this one.

Braves : Goals - Javier Hernandez 5, Gary Berleau, Misael Evans, Alex Rodriguez, Steven Rodriguez. GK - Phoenix Herrigell

Saints : Goals - Soren Kringel 5, Marcos Cervantes 3, David Solano 3, Jesse Sanchez 2, Marcos Peinado 2, Armando Pulido, Armando Arevalo, Elias Rodroguez. GK - Frank Lopez

Game 6 (for 3rd Place & CIF Berth):

Nipomo 9, Morro Bay 7 [OT]
[Nip 1,1,4,1,1,1 - 9   MB 2,2,2,1,0,0 - 7]

The Titans had a big 3rd period, and then held the Pirates scoreless in both OT periods to escape. It looked like the Pirates might pull off the upset, but Santos Pena hit the net with 1:31 left in the 1st overtime, and David Caruso hit one as time expired in the 2nd OT for the 9-7 win.

The quality of the goalkeeper play in this game was quite high, with some truly outstanding work by both Krull and Katz.

Jack Krull demonstrates why you might not want to be a goalkeeper.

Titans : Goals - Santos Pena 3, David Caruso 2, Brian Araujo 2, Zach Smith, Brenden Wing. Saves - Andy Katz 12.

Pirates : Goals - Travis Chirman 6, Ryan Kitzman 1. Saves - Jack Krull - 13

Game 7 (Championship):
Santa Ynez 10, Cabrillo 9 [SD OT]
[Cab 3,1,3,2,0,0,0 -9  SY 3,0,4,2,0,0,1 - 10]

Cabrillo just had some opportunities, but like this one, just couldn't quite make them pay off -

and this one -

aaaannnddd this one -

Neither squad could score in the two full-time OT periods, but the Pirates scored on a 5-meter penalty shot for the 'Golden Goal' with 1:58 left in the 3rd.

Conqs : Goals - Nick Matulis 3, Eduardo Cardenas 2, Phil Naughton 2, Noah Caro, Joel Larson. Saves - Zach Cole/Sam Reep 11

Cabrillo at Lompoc
(Huyck Stadium)

"The Little 'Big Games' "

You knew Lompoc Superfan Dick Dixon would be there.
Big Game Week festivities returned to Huyck Stadium with the freshman and junior varsity games. Unusually it marked the 2nd time this season that the frosh teams played, since many area schools have dropped freshman football.

The Lompoc Cheer Squad at Halftime of the JV Game

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 55, Cabrillo 14
[Lom 15, 33, 7, 0 - 55  Cab 8, 0, 0, 6 - 14]

The same way the game was played - #3 Isaac Jordan surrounded by the Blue 'bigs'.

Lompoc finished the season 8-2, rebounding from an 0-2 start with 8 straight victories, culminating with a resounding 55-14 win over Cabrillo. The Braves led 48-8 at the half resulting in a running clock after the break.

Although the Braves scored on 8 of their 9 1st-half possessions, it was a big 2nd Quarter that broke open a relatively tight game. Lompoc led 9-0 due to a 36 yard Isaac Jordan TD and a 38 yard Oscar Ramirez FG, when the Conqs scored a 47 yard Chris Glaze TD run & 2-point conversion to trim the margin to one.

Cabrillo was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct on the TD, however, and it cost them. The resultant kickoff was from the Conqs own 25 yardline and Israel Norman took it back 52 yards for a Lompoc TD with 71 seconds left in the 1st. Cabrillo burned the rest of the period, before turning the ball over on downs and the floodgates opening.

Isaac Jordan opened the 2nd with a nifty, shifty 56 yard TD jaunt with a really nice cut-back at the Conq 15. He had 5 1st-half carries for 157 yards and a pair of TDs and would finish with 9 totes for 194 yards.

After a Cabrillo punt, the Braves struck on a 54 yard pass from Torey Sims to Teddy Perry and following another 3 & out, a 19 yard Dylan Davis run. Cabrillo muffed the kickoff and on the next play Sims cruised 31 yards around the end for six. When the Conqs were again unable to move the ball, Teddy Perry returned the punt 52 yards for the final tally of the half. Lompoc had 20 plays for 298 yards in the half.

The Braves Bradley Osborn fell on a fumble in the End Zone (Ramirez kick) for the sole points of the 3rd, and Cabrillo's Isaiah Adams ran 5 yards for 6 points in the 4th.

Torey Sims finished the night with 64 rushing yards (6 attempts) and Dylan Davis was 5-37. Bradley Osborne and Andres Guadarrama keyed the Lompoc defense according to Head Coach Jake Brown.

Cabrillo was led by the valiant efforts of Alex Robinette who seemingly never came off the field and another fine two-way performance by Chris Glaze. DE Chris Konscholke, an exchange student, merited special comment from Cabrillo Head Coach Dan Cook, for his high level of play on the night, and indee, all season.

The Lompoc freshmen celebrate.

Freshman
Lompoc 28, Cabrillo 12
Halftime Lompoc 14, Cabrillo 6

The Conquistadores (7-3) scored 2 TD's, one on a simple 2-3 yard dive by Mason Villa, the other on a 20 yard halfback pass from De'Andre Sauceda to Rolando Laugen. Cabrillo was dealt a huge blow late in the 1st Quarter when big play man Anthony Manahan sustained a possible concussion and had to be pulled from the game. J.C. Miller ran the offense at Quarterback.

Defensively, the visitors were led Cody Perry, who had "18 or 19 tackles" according to Head Coach Brad Rudolph who added "I stopped counting at 15."

The Braves avenge a loss at Cabrillo earlier in the season. Lompoc's Niko Sapp scored twice, and Juan [] once, while Trevaughn Ross scored a TD and 2 2-point conversions. Zeke Chavez was the kicker on the regular PATs. Head Coach Kyle Mayse noted the defensive work of #54 Michael Zubiate.

The Braves finish the season 4-3, and as Mayse told his team after the game "I'm glad you found out what it was like to play at your best".

Girls Golf

CIF-SS Individual Championship
(Talega Golf Club, San Clemente) [Par-71]

Desiree Gillaspy (On the right in picture) of St Joseph, the final remaining golfer from the area, shot a 75 on Thursday to for 31st place tie among the 72 competitors. She was 4 over through five, but played even par the rest of the way. The cut to advance also happened to be 75, so Gillaspy moves on to the SoCal Regional Finals to be held at The Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta.
