CIF-SS Division 4 Wild Card 'I'

Orcutt Academy 14, Lompoc 4

(at the Dave Bickmore Courts, LHS)
Round 1: 1-5  Round 2: 1-5   Round 3: 2-4

Of the 44 teams in the Division 4 bracket, the #7 ranked Spartans were somehow given a road game in the Wild Card round. It was, however, the Lompoc Braves who suffered the most. Lompoc, the 3rd place team from the LPL, hasn't had so much as a sniff of the rankings this season, and would normally not expect to see such a tough opponent until the 2nd round.

Orcutt Academy's two losses on the year were to LPL Champion Santa Ynez [20-4, 12-0], and Frontier League Champs Carpenteria [18-2, 10-0].

There were extensive 3rd round changes as each team swapped out their #2 and #3 doubles duos.

Braves [10-7, 8-4 LPL]:

Singles -
#1 Emily Gracyk    1-2 (1-6, 1-6, 6-2);
#2 Marielle Tabin  1-2 (1-6, 0-6, 6-2);

[MB 3,3,5,2 - 13  SM 0,3,1,3]

The Pirates took a 5-0 lead early in the 2nd, and were up 11-3 in the 3rd before the Saints were able to close.

Game #2
 [2:30pm]:

[Nip 5,2,6,3 -16  Lom 1,2,3,1-7]

Steven Rodriguez actually gave the Braves the early lead by striking at the 5:51 mark of the 1st Quarter. That seemed to energize the Titans and they scored the next 6 goals and never looked back. Eleven of the 15 Nipomo players scored, including GK Andy Katz on a bomb with 1 second remaining in the 3rd.

Unfortunately for the Braves there was too much of this -

Titans : Goals - David Caruso 3, Melchor De La Cruz 2, Colby Webb 2, Luke Sparkes 2, Andy Katz, Cooper Merrill, Santos Peria, Matt Dahlberg, Vincenzo Pulverino, Mika Kilpelainen, Kyle Gaussoin.  Saves - Mika Kilpelainen (1st H) 2, Andy Katz (2 H) 3.

[SY 3,6,6,5 -20   MB 0,0,0,3 - 3]

Travis Chirman's 5-meter penalty shot with 2:40 left, finally got Morro Bay on the board, but it was barely a chip on Santa Ynez's 19-0 lead.

SY Pirates : Goals - Antonio Buell 5, Sam Pappas 5, Jeff Bastanchury 4, Parker Maccianti 2, Blane Hemming 2, Graham Mueller, Steven Snedden.

Game #4
 [4:30pm]:
#2 Cabrillo 13, G2W Nipomo 6
[Cab 5,2,3,3 - 13   Nip 1,2,2,1 - 6]

The Conquistadores were good at the loose ball scramble, swam a bit faster, and had better passing for most of the game -

Conquistadores : Goals - Eduardo Cardenas 6, Nick Matulis 5, Noah Caro, Phil Naughton. Saves - Sam Reep 8.

Titans : Goals - David Caruso 3, Zach Smith, Brian Araujo, Caleb Sandberg. Saves - Andy Katz 9.

Note: Games #5 (Lompoc/Santa Maria); #6 (Morro Bay/Nipomo), and #7 (Santa Ynez/Cabrillo) will held at the CoLAC on Thursday, 7 November at 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm respectively.
