The Phantom Menace ?

Football

CIF Western (IV) Division

Cathedral/LA (6-4) at Lompoc (9-1)

For the second time in as many weeks,  the Braves were handed the 7th ranked team in the division as a home playoff opponent. On November 5th, the Braves Girls Tennis squad played the 7th ranked Orcutt Academy Spartans in a Wild Card contest. Tonight the CIF-SS Div IV 4th ranked Braves face the #7 Phantoms on the gridiron at Huyck in a '1st Round' misnomer.

Officially listed at 6-4, Cathedral has 3 Mission League losses to some of the best teams in the state, and a forfeit loss in their opener against LaSalle. On the field, they took that game 34-9 against the 8-2 Del Rey League Champs. Their losses on the field were to teams ranked #2 (Serra), #7 (Chaminade), and #27 (St Francis) in the state by CalPreps and who are respectively ranked 7th, 31st, and 220th Nationally by the same organization. They have the Phantoms ranked 966th in the nation and 96th in the state. They slot Lompoc (9-1) at 142th and 1503rd in comparison.

The Phantoms have put up some big numbers this season on offense (35.9 ppg), but don't overlook their defense. Except for the games against 'the big 3' they have allowed just 58 points (8.3ppg).

So is there good news for the Braves? Well, Lompoc is at Home where they are 5-0, and Cathedral is 2-3 on the road. Oh, and that LaSalle squad that the Phantoms beat, suffered their other loss at the hands of Bishop Diego (43-16), and technically Cathedral has no wins against teams with a winning record. Their wins have come versus lesser competition - 3 Div X, 1 Div VII, 1 LA DII, and 2 league wins over 4-6 Harvard-Westlake & 1-9 St Paul.

In short Cathedral has beaten bad to mediocre squads and lost to good teams - which category does Lompoc fit in ?
