Girls Tennis

Congratulations to the Girls Tennis Teams at Arroyo Grande and Carpinteria who both won CIF-SS Divisional Championships on Friday at the Claremont Club.

The Eagles took the Division 3 Title in a squeeker 9-9 (77-74) over Murrieta Valley. The Warriors defeated Riverside Poly 12-6 for the Division 5 crown.

Cathedral at Lompoc

The Phantoms came to town as a team surrounded by discussions of what 'could have been' were it not for their tough competition, but that reputation was built more on who they lost to rather than who they beat.

Lompoc straightened out the confusion on Friday night with a convincing 38-7 victory. It could have easily been worse, but the Braves left a couple of dozen points lying on the damp Huyck Stadium turf in the first half.

Lompoc received the opening kickoff after Cathedral won the toss & deferred, and promptly drove the field. The Braves went 63 yards on 6 plays with A.J. Florez providing the capper on a 41 yard TD jaunt.

The Lompoc offense faltered somewhat the rest of the half when on 4 occasions the Braves just missed passing connections that had touchdown written all over them. After the first such event, they salvaged 3 points on a 38 yard Javier De La Cueva Field Goal.

The Phantoms scored their only points of the 1st half, and indeed the game, on their second possession. After managing only a 3 & out the first time they had the ball, they were able to move the ball a little the second time. They also had a very fortuitous big play to set them up deep in Lompoc territory.

Facing a 3rd & 8 at their own 36, QB M.C. Poe launched a pass downfield that was underthrown and caused both the defender and receiver to slip and fall. The ball hit the back of the Lompoc player and was snagged by Marshaun Cameron for a 37 yard gain. Poe would finish with 263 yards on 22 of 46 passing (no TDs, no Picks).

That drive stalled, however, and the Phantoms lined up to kick a Field Goal, but Lompoc jumped offside giving them a first down at the Braves 5 yardline. Jahmaree DeSett pounded the the ball into the endzone on the following play.

Cathedral would later miss a FG attempt in the 2nd period, and would have another blocked by Richard Foster on initial go-round of the 3rd Quarter. Lompoc meanwhile, would continue to have a solid, if unspectacular ground game, but would also get the passing attack untracked after the halftime break.

Lompoc was 0-5 passing in the first 24 minutes of action, having two drops, a line tip, an overthrow - all to open receivers who had scoring chances. The other 'pass' was a spiked ball to stop the clock before the half.

They got their act together in the 2nd half. Gage Buckley was 5-5 for 136 yards with 2 TDs, hitting Greg Mitchell on a 65 yard pass and run (mostly run) TD in the 3rd, and Vincent Raya on a 20 yarder in the 4th. He also connected with Ainuu Taua for 30 yards to help set up the TD to Raya.

In addition, Buckley scored a rushing TD, taking it in on a 1 yard plunge after a high snap on a punt attempt set the Braves up at the Phantoms 2 yardline.
Austin Hayes had the final TD of the night - a 32 yarder up the middle when the Braves were trying to chew up the clock. Javier De La Cueva concluded the scoring by hitting his 5th PAT of the session.
