Football

From the Santa Monica Daily Press, 17 Nov 2013:

The win sets up a matchup with Lompoc on Friday.
Samohi will have to take the long bus trip for the second round game, but [ Travis ] Clark isn’t overly worried.
He said that Lompoc is a team that likes to run the ball, something his miserly defense should be able to cope with.

Really ?

It makes one wonder what would have happened if the Braves had really played well. Lompoc on two separate occasions had 1st downs deep in Viking territory (the 8 & 13) and came away with 0 points. They also fumbled away the opening kickoff, had several not smart penalties, and some mental lapses.

As it was Lompoc was simply too much for Santa Monica - rolling to a 42-10 victory at Huyck that was never really in doubt. The Braves piled up 334 yards rushing on 24 attempts (13.92 ave) - in the 1st half. Five different rushers scored [Hayes (2), Portis, Florez, Buckley, Foster] and both Portis (11-134) and Florez (13-134) cleared the 100 yard mark. Hayes (15-89) was close.

Gage Buckley was 3-5 passing for 45 yard, and threw a pick in the end zone, but also had 55 yards (7.9 ave) and a TD rushing. Mitchell (2-29) & Taua (1-16) had the catches.

The Braves picked up 472 yards on 53 plays overall, and rushed for 437 on 48 carries. The Vikings had 23 plays for 75 yards in the 1st half, but improved in the 2nd - posting 85 yards on 23 plays. SaMoHi QB's, they utilized 3, were 6-10-1 passing for just 40 yards.

The 10 Lompoc Possessions: Fumble, TD/EP, TD/EP, TD/EP, Interception, TD/EP, End Half, TD/EP, Downs, TD/EP. When the Braves were stopped it was due more to their errors than the Vaunted Viking defense.

The 10 Santa Monica Possessions: Punt, Kickoff Return TD/EP, Punt, Punt, Punt, FG, Fumble, Punt, Downs, Interception. The FG drive was greatly assisted by a dubious pass interference penalty on 3rd & 7, and the pick was the final play of the game.
