Girls Hoop Tournaments: Dec 4-7

Girls Basketball Tournaments,
    4-7 December 2013

High School Basketball really has two seasons. The first is held mostly in December and largely consists of a bunch of tournaments with games clustered around the weekends. The 2nd is the league schedule in Jan/Feb, which in the case of the LPL, has games on Monday (some), Wednesday, and Friday.

This week is the tip-off of that '1st season', with a slew of tourneys to get things started. There are 4 primary tourneys involving local teams - 2 varsity, 1 JV, and 1 frosh.

Bryan Ayer Tournament [Lompoc]
Named to commemorate the late LHS Athletic Director, this is a smallish tourney held on Bryan Ayer Court in Paisola Pavilion at Lompoc HS.

Teams (8) - Lompoc, Cabrillo, Coast Union, Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos, Santa Maria, Orcutt Academy

Thursday, 5 December 2013

Game 1 [3pm]: Nordoff 40, Orcutt Academy 22
Game 2 [4:30]: Santa Barbara 54, Cabrillo 34

This is indicative of the night Cabrillo had. Worked hard, but...

It was a workman-like performance as the Dons slowly dismantled Cabrillo. A steady dose of Amber Melgoza accounted for 24 points through 3 periods, after which she was relegated to the bench as Santa Barbara cruised home.

Conqs : Sophia Stevens 8, Devan McCune 7, Jenna Dailey 6.

Dons : Amber Melgoza 24, Desirea Coleman 9.

Game 3 [6pm]: Dos Pueblos 64, Santa Maria 33
Game 4 [7:30]: Lompoc 71, Coast Union 4

It was not a good portent when the Captains met at mid-court before the game. The diminutive Lompoc pair, for perhaps the first time in their lives were the two tallest players on the court. Coast Union has one player taller than 5'5", she is 5'8", and their biggest guard is a 5'3" sophomore. It would have been kind if the had started the running clock then, instead of the start of the 3rd.

The Coast Union Broncos scored with 1:57 remaining in the 1st Quarter, they scored again with 3:43 left in the 3rd. And that was it. The first score cut the Braves lead to 27-2, the second 49-4. Lompoc's Claudia Terrones had rotated her entire 9-player roster into the game by mid-way through the 1st, and instituted a policy that there would be no shooting until the shot clock was down to 10 seconds-stifling many a fast break opportunity.

Through 3 quarters, by one count anyway, the Broncos had 4 points & 4 rebounds. They did get another rebound in the 4th period - they would get no more points

Braves [1-0]: Lexie Barbosa 8, Precilla Castellanos 2, Cyenne Garrett 2, Chavon Garrett 4, Nay Brown 16, Ariana Espinosa 10 (8 1st Q), Rylee Sager 12, Cheyenne Marmalejo 13, Jocylyn Taylor 4.

Broncos : Kima Pashal 4.

The Opening Tip-off of the game was another clue to this one.

Game 5 [6pm]Santa Barbara 74, Nordoff 33
Game 6 [7:30]: Dos Pueblos 49, vs Lompoc 39
[Lom 6,14,10,9 - 39   DP 141,15,8,12 - 49]

Fouls were a big factor in this one, DP was whistled for 12 in the 1st half, but the Braves only hit 5-14 from the line. The Chargers cleaned up their 'reach-in' problems in the 2nd half, being called for committing only 5 offenses and Lompoc did not visit the line in the half. The Braves had problems shooting away from the line as well, hitting on only 29 % of their shots (16-56).

Braves [1-1]: Lexie Barbosa 10pts; Cheyenne Marmalejo 8pts, 11rbs; Chrisshnay Brown 9pts, 10rbs; Rylee Sager 8pts, 10rbs; Arianna Espinosa 4.

Royals : Brandy Jimenez 12 (7-8FT); Helen Nam 11; Hallie McGee 9 (all 1stH); Emi Parker 6.
