End of an Era [10 Dec]

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Tuesday saw an appearance like that of a fabled and mythical creature as the Lompoc Varsity Boys Basketball Team finally took the court. The JV joined them at Paisola Pavillion, while the girls traveled to Lakewood Junior High in Orcutt.

The Girls Soccer squads all hit the road Cabrillo went to Pioneer Valley and Lompoc visited SLO. The guys played at home.

The biggest news of the week on the local sports scene has been the resignation of Craig Knowles as the Head Coach at Cabrillo High School. He was 26-38 (17-21 LPL) in 6 years at the helm and led the Conquistadores to the only CIF-SS Football Championship game in school history.

Coach Knowles will remain as the schools boys golf coach and as a Physical Education Instructor.

Boys Basketball

Orcutt Academy at Lompoc

Lompoc got off to a quick start off the opening tip, but I think the girls were a tad bit faster last Thursday.

Lompoc 69, Orcutt Academy 37
[Lom 15,13,24,17 - 69  OA 10,10,4,13 - 37]

After a 1st half that saw a Lompoc squad look like a slightly hyper-active version of the Tin Man slowly come back into motion, the Braves came out firing on all cylinders in the 3rd. It was a preview of coming attractions that put a brief smile on the face of Lompoc Head Coach Joe Smith and drew the ire of Orcutt Head Coach Darrell Black.

Early on, Lompoc had occasional bursts of good, but was very inconsistent. There were things like a steal, a good pass, and a blown lay-up. Rebounds dropped out of bounds, several 3 second violations, etc. . The Braves still managed to stay out in front of OA, but the Spartans hung around mostly on the strength of outside jumpers from the corners and the wings.

And then came the 3rd Quarter. The Braves came out and pressed all over the floor. It worked. Lompoc up 8 at the main break, scored the first 18 points of the half and never looked back.

Coach Smith believes that Lompoc hasn't reached their potential yet, "They only had one week of practice, and they still haven't quite put everything together."

Braves [1-0]: Drayten Howell 16 (2-3 FT), Torey Sims 10 (2x3), Cory Maxwell 0 (0-2 FT), B.J. Taylor 5 (1-3 FT), Glen Taylor 5 (1-2 FT), Richard Foster 5 (1x3), Darius Dunson 3 (1x3), Nate Taylor 2, Jerrard O'Byrne 5 (1x3), Joseph Osegueda 2, Derek Portis 1 (1-2), Gabe Simon 15 (1-2 FT), Ruben Venegas 0, Elijah Bailey 0.

Junior Varsity

Lompoc Coach Buddy Sims has two units - the 'Blue' & the 'White' that he rotates during the course of the game. There two additional subs that are used with both units.

Lompoc 71, Orcutt Academy 42
[Lom 8,23,18,22 - 71  OA 9,9,9,15 - 42]
After a slow start, the Braves exploded in the 2nd to blow the game open. although the Spartan's
Nick Dominguez tried to keep it close with a rain of treys, Lompoc kept the scoring machine fully functional.

Braves : Rauly Yanez 7 (1x3, 2-2 FT), Filip Krajic 17 (7-8 FT), Bradley Osborn 6, Darren Munoz 2, Trey Bridgett 2 (0-1 FT), Creighton Morales 2, Mark Morales 6 (all 2Q), Marcus Nix 0 (0-1 FT), Ben Odom 6 (4-5 FT), Kameron Davis 7 (3-4 FT), Trevaughn Ross 16.

Spartans : Javier Sanchez 2 (0-2 FT), Nick Dominguez 19 (5x3), Matthew Richards 5 (3-3 FT), Vincent Benavida 6 (1x5, 1-1 FT), Dylan Miller 0 (0-2 FT), Anjelo Ward 6 (4-5 FT), Isaiah Heath 3 (1x3). 7 others did not have stats.

Cabrillo only managed 7 shots (4 by Priscilla Angulo). Rikki Patel went the whole 90 minutes in goal and had 6 saves.

Junior Varsity
Pioneer Valley 1, Cabrillo 0

The JV couldn't generate any offense either. Krista Eisen (1 goal allowed) and Carissa Sanchez split time in goal.

Lompoc at San Luis Obispo

SLO 3, Lompoc 0

The Tigers expanded on a 2-0 halftime advantage. SLO moves to 3-0 and dropped the Braves to 0-3.

Tigers : Goals - Katarina Drake (off Sydney Knauer corner kick ); Sydney Knauer (Cassidy Block); Kelsey Shetler (Ellee Shields). GK - Lily McCann 1 Save.

Junior Varsity

SLO 8, Lompoc 0

It was a rough afternoon for the JV even before the game. Two starters were already out due to injury - MF Marisol Zaragoza, who is expected back by next Tuesday, and D Ashley Clark who ruptured an ACL. Then two more starters,  F Yadira Castellanos and D Lacei Sanders were fleeted up to the varsity, before Tuesdays action.

In the game they ran into a troop of Tigers with much more experience in the sport and it showed. Mercedes Signorelli had 'three outstanding saves' according to the staff, and Michaela Kimmy had a few 'nice passes that should have led to something', but the Braves never ripples the net.

Pioneer Valley at Cabrillo

Cabrillo 1, PV 1
[Halftime 1-1]

Maybe Cabrillo Head Coach James Baca has an affinity for neckwear or just really likes his sister, but his charges came away from Cabrillo Field Tuesday evening with yet another tie. Coach Baca wasn't unhappy with the result though, "That's a really good team over there.", He said. "They're better than just about anybody we'll face this year".

Besides a spectacular performance by Lucas Derflinger in goal, the coach was appreciative of the job done on offense by Nate Jostes, saying "He just completely controlled the top for us". Derflinger had a mess of saves, but also got lucky when a ball that had him beat hit the post.

The game was a bit chippy with 3-4 yellow cards issued to each side. The only red card issued though went to 'Boomer' Duffy on an odd circumstance. Duffy picked up a yellow card on the field and was substituted. While he was on the sideline, he picked up a ball he thought was out of bounds, but it was actually in play, resulting in his 2nd yellow. Consequently he will miss the game against Righetti.

Conqs : Goal - Josh Miller (4th, rebound). Goalkeeper - Lucas Derflinger 90 minutes, 20 saves.

Panthers [6-1-1]: Goal - Angel Rangel (10th, rebound). Goalkeeper - Sergio Chavez & Miguel Mendez split time.

Junior Varsity
PV 5, Cabrillo 0

Brian Aquino had 3 goals for the Panthers. Michael Espinosa and Carlos Velasquez-Palma each added one as PV cruised.

San Luis Obispo at Lompoc

Lompoc 1, SLO 1
[Halftime Lompoc 1-0]

Yup, another 'sister-kisser' in the valley. The Braves got a 1st half goal from newcomer Hector Velasquez, but couldn't hold the lead. Head Coach Mike Burke described the work of Jose Cardenas in the net as 'Phenomenal".

Braves : Goal (Assist) - Hector Velasquez (Jose Cazarez). Goalkeeper - Jose Cardenas -  9-10 saves, including "four really nice ones".

Tigers : Goal (Assist) - Ty Cooper (None). Goalkeeper - Cam Wright 90 minutes, 7 saves.

Junior Varsity
SLO 3, Lompoc 0
[Halftime SLO 1-0]

Braves : Goal  - None. Goalkeeper - Michael Yang.

Tigers : Goals  - Anthony Farais 2, Keith McCauley.  Goalkeeper - Benji Alonzo, Jacob Agar, and Isai Castillo all spent time in the cage.
